Today we have a gallery for NECA‘s latest horror themed retro figure; Freddy Krueger. This version, based on Freddy’s appearance in A Nightmare On Em St. 2: Freddy Revenge, is the second version to be released in their retro line. Inspired by classic Mego 8″ figures, the Freddy Krueger features a fully articulated body type outfitted with fabric clothing. It includes swappable head sculpts, an alternate claw hand and a removable hat.

Overall
It was a pretty big surprise when NECA revealed that they would be doing a Freddy based on NOES2. The film, routinely considered one of the two to three worst in the series, actually has some redeeming moments (“You are all my children now”) and a great update to Freddy’s design. In the film, the burn makeup and shape was altered a bit to give Freddy a more demonic, witch like, appearance. The sweater, was also altered, adding stripes all the way down his arms. The final change comes at the end of the film, when Freddy’s glove hand is replaced with the blades protruding directly from his fingers. It added up to a more creepy looking Freddy, even though the film itself was extremely light on scares.
This figure utilizes NECA’s type-2 Mego style body. This added more articulation to the retro line. The figure is all the better for it. The full range of motions allows for some nice iconic poses. The figure has sturdy legs, which allowed me to pose him without him tipping over during the shoot. NECA’s sculptors did an fantastic job on the Freddy specific parts of the sculpt. The two included head sculpts may be some of the best in their retro line. They also offer wildly different expressions, with one even offering the exposed brain of Freddy as seen in the movie. The hands also have some fine sculpted details. Including interchangeable right hands is a welcome addition, especially if you want him to look more iconic, and less like NOES2 Freddy.
I really only have one thing that bothered me slightly. That was the overall puffiness of the sweater. It felt like it was just one size too big. It keeps it in line with how that material would have been represented as a Mego, so I get it. Everything else on this figure was so spot on, and this is a fairly minor quibble I have.
In the end, I think this is a really great representation of Freddy. It was a fun figure to shoot and is well worth it if you’re into horror figures of this nature. It may well be the best figure in the line, that is until the Friday the 13th Part 6 Jason Voorhees hits.
