First Look – Texas Chainsaw Massacre Leatherface Ultimate Figure by NECA

By Joe Moore on August 23, 2015 at 6:30 pm under Horror Toy News, Random Photo Shoot

Today we have another really cool first look from our visit to NECA’s studio. They were kind enough to provide us with the Texas Chainsaw Massacre – Leatherface Ultimate 7″ Scale Figure. When it was released in 1974, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was a revolutionary and shockingly brutal horror film. The film helped to define, what would become, the slasher genre of horror films. It faced bans in numerous countries and massive backlash for its portrayal of a man who wears a mask made of his murder victims’ human skin. While the actual on screen violence is fairly tame by today’s standards, the use of grainy film, the horrific scenery and the tense setups all combine to create a truly memorable experience. The growing fan base of exploitation horror films turned it into a massive financial success, gaining over $30 million on a $300,000 budget. By the 80’s, the film was a VHS cult hit and it spawned numerous sequels before getting caught up in the remake craze. The original Leatherface, however, remains one of the most iconic and terrifying figures in horror film history.

We have a massive gallery of the figure. After the jump you can find over 70 high resolution images. Also be sure to check out all of our NECA Toy Galleries, to keep up with our growing collection. See the photos and review after the jump.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre – Leatherface Ultimate 7″ Scale Figure

Pros

  • Fantastic sculpt
  • Loads of accessories
  • Swappable heads
  • Great backdrop included
  • Great articulation
  • Removable cloth apron

Cons

  • None

Overall
Leatherface comes packaged in a really nice flapped window box. The front features the iconic movie poster. The sides and back look like it’s made out of his skin mask. Inside, you’ll find a nice shot against the diorama they built. A meat packing room diorama backdrop, whic his a photo of the actual diorama built for NECA’s own photo shoot, is a really welcome addition. It’s laid out in a way so that the side flaps appear to be the walls on either side of the doors. The figure includes two interchangeable heads, his iconic “Killing Mask and the “Old Woman Mask”. The figure also comes with his chainsaw, a knife, a mallet, a meat hook, a cleaver, and a cloth apron. The cloth apron is removable, and you can remove it without untying it by slipping it off when you’re changing heads. Leatherface features over 25 points of articulation.

The figure is a beautifully sculpted, gruesome looking character. The head sculpts are especially detailed. It looks as if they actually have masks over head sculpts, which is a pretty impressive feat. The cloths are also spot on. The skin features a more opaque plastic, as opposed to figures like John Matrix, who have a more iridescent look to them. The skin areas on the masks, hair, arms and hands all heave some really nice paint washes over them, which helps to bring out the details. The apron also has a nice blood splatter effect. Each of the included accessories also has a nice bit of detail. The metallic weapons, such as the meat cleaver and knife, have nice scratch detailing. The chainsaw and meat hook both feature their own bloody paint apps. The chainsaw itself is a nice replica of the one used in the film. When posing the figure, Leatherface can get into nearly any murderous stance you’d like. I never needed to use a figure stand as it has nice weight distribution. It never felt like it would fall over as the ankle joints were nice and tight. The hands grip the weapons without any trouble and there’s enough articulation in the arm to have both hands on the chainsaw in many poses.

This is one of those figures that’s really hard for me to find fault with. Joints were all tight, there’s lots of articulation and accessories and it’s excellently sculpted and painted. The box and brilliant backdrop just add to the overall package. The figure is scheduled for release in a few weeks.
