Diamond Select Toys has started to revisit some of their earlier Universal Monsters Select Action Figures. By creating new sculpts or modifying previous ones, they are bringing some of their classic characters up to the modern standards of their current Select style figures. Their previous Creature of the Black Lagoon Version 2 was one of the best Universal Monsters releases to date. Today we have a gallery and review of the Universal Monsters Wolfman Version 2 Figure. Overall
The Wolfman comes packaged in the familiar Select style cardback packaging. Once opened, there’ no real way to pop it back in for display. It’s held on the tray with a few twist ties. The figure also include a diorama display base, in this case the ruins of a tomb. The figure stands about 7″ tall and has about 16 points of articulation.
The Version 2 Wolfman is a new sculpt, and a vast improvement over the previous release. The head sculpt has great definition in the hair, eyes and teeth. It has a nice likeness to the classic Wolfman. The clothing also features better definition compared to the original, with deeped cuts for hems lines, buttons and more realistic looking folds. The sculpt, overall, has a more lifelike appearance. DST also slathered this thing in paint details. The figure features base color paints for the wolf, shirt and pants pieces. Then there are multiple color washes over each area to bring out the finer sculpted details. They used multiple colors in those washes, which works best on the furry areas, making them look more natural and hair-like.
The first release had very limited articulation, while this new version has a much better range of movement. These include multiple cuts in the arms and legs for more dynamic poses. The chest has a ball jointed torso. Ankles and wrists also have joints and swivels added in. I was able to get some really nice poses in. However, some of the articulation cuts look a bit awkward in more dynamic poses, and some of the sculpted folds can hinder movement. It’s not a major issue, but it is noticeable at times. The feet have peg holes in them, so you can use the included display base as a figure stand, giving the figure an anchor point when setting him up in more difficult poses.
This is an excellent release in the Universal Monsters Select line. If you have the first release, it’s definitely worth upgrading. With a well done sculpt, solid articulation and a good paint job it’s a great take on one of the most iconic film creatures there is. I should have The Mummy photo shoot ready later this week.
