While most collectors buy what they want throughout the year, has anyone made any sort of list for other family members to look at this Christmas?
I thought about doing it but my family kinda questions why I would ask for toys rather than say, a crock-pot LOL They know I collect and I have hinted this year that IF they feel like maybe getting something cheap and simple, I do have a list they can look at |

I'm very particular with what I buy, toy wise, but I give my wife other small things to get, like blurays or comics and such.

I have a tough time with lists...
I have an amazon wish list with nothing, but toys, but I would be so upset if my Girlfriend actually got them from amazon. I have the entire new MI 3.75 on my list, but they are twice as much as what they cost on Hasbro toyshop... I always tell her just because it is on the list does not mean it HAS to come from amazon |

As a kid, its only natural to ask for all of the ridiculously priced Star Wars ships with the new movie coming out and all. I just scanned through the TRU website, and made an organized list of basically every one of the 3.75" scale Star Wars ships and printed it out.

Booze and hookers!!.
Seriously most people just get me gift cards so I get what I want once I know what I have.

For figures, I keep that list to myself. I have no idea what my family is getting me. Maybe some videogames and blurays. Figure that I'm hoping to get this month is the Tamashii Nations Ronin Boba Fett. If that comes in, my Christmas will be awesome. Most of the stuff I want doesn't come out till next year, SH Figuarts and Hot Toys Captain Phasma, NECA Contra. What did get me back into figure collecting was when my fiance (now wife) got me a Snake Eyes figure that I've always wanted. It was an unexpected surprise and reignited my love of action figures.

Yeah, I actually write them down on a list and cross them off if/as I get them. Since I tend to focus on "adult" collectibles I feel the need to check items over and make sure everything is okay, this can't be done if the item is a surprise. I remember a couple of years ago I ordered the NECA motorized patriot from Bioshock Infinite and my dad (yes I still live with my parents, apartments cost money and I'd rather buy more toys ) got to the package before I could and hid it so I had no idea it came in on time. I was just as surprised it was flawless as I was it even kept to schedule.
My official list this year only has one thing left on it that I expect to be out in time for Christmas: Ultimate part VI Jason. The hunt is on.

Christmas isn't a 'retail event' for me like in decades past. I look forward to time with close family and friends and simply being thankful for a roof, a full gut, a warm bed and no emergencies.
I use e-tail wish-lists, but modern collecting doesn't lend itself to seasonality: things get pre-ordered and shipped year-round. Anyway, I dread spending money on disappointments, so need personal time to pick and choose and evaluate and change my mind as new information comes in about a given product. The list is a constant work in progress, in other words, so unsuitable for Christmas shopping by others. Besides, most of my family is older, and there's a generational perception that grown adults don't collect toys, and I respect that even if I don't agree personally. So if they want to give me something, let it be an expensive vintage or a good box of chocolate! |

I have a wishlist on Amazon and I email links to people who ask me. It's mostly Graphic Novels and TPBs that range from $10 to $25. The cool thing about it is that if someone buys you something from your wishlist, Amazon will let you know that you may have a gift when you add the item to your cart. I think that's awesome because I've always been the kind of person who prowls around the house snooping for presents and carefully undoing the tape onpackages under the tree.
As far as toys go, I usually like to buy those myself because I am particular about paint and I know where to shop so I don't pay too much. Most of my family wouldn't buy me figures anyway because they don't know what I have and what I don't. I wish Big Bad Toy Store sold gift cards because then I could just tell everyone to send me one of those. |

A gift card program seems clever at first blush, but run a search for "Gift Card" and "Fraud," and a dark picture develops. Cards appear to represent quite a headache, maybe / probably more trouble than they're worth.
Online Retail Fraud Attempts Increased by 30% in Past Year (18-Nov) I despise gift cards generally. People give them when they feel obliged to buy something but can't be bothered to shop. Gift Cards Suck American consumers are wasting roughly $8 billion annually on holiday shopping, thanks to gift cards. Each year an estimated $1 billion on gift cards go unredeemed, while $5-7 billion on gift cards expire before use or are simply lost. That sucks. My preference is quality time, followed by good old paper CASH. No fees, no fraud, no hassle, fully transferable, and no expiry! Last edited by Skoob; 12-15-2015 at 10:36 PM.. |
