Art Asylum Blog AskDST #60 - Stargate Universe & Battlestar Galactica Edition
We’re back with another thrilling installment of AskDST - where this week DSTChuck takes on your Battlestar Galactica and Stargate questions! What are the odds of seeing Stargate Universe figures? Just how long will the BSG action figure line continue? Check out the full batch of your questions after the jump! Jonathan Quirk Assuming Stargate Universe does well, would you consider releasing a series of SGU figures before resuming SG-1 / Atlantis, to judge customer interest and to take advance of current SGU interest to promote the SG-1 / SG-A lines? Do you even have the rights to SGU? DSTChuck: Jonathan, I can’t say for sure but yes I think we’d want to hit while the iron is hot with SGU and hopefully a re-energized fan base would make more of the classic product possible. Callum Templeton Hi If you decide to do Stargate Universe figures, what characters do you think you will have in the first wave? Thanks. DSTChuck: To be honest at this point we have no idea. John Sharkey Please release Adama Sr. & President Roslin. They were, respectively, the heart and soul of the series and the collection is incomplete without them. Any other figures we get will be very welcome frosting, but these two are necessary, so how about a two pack? DSTChuck: We did consider a two pack exactly like that for sometime but the thinking was it would not be exciting to anyone but completists. So we’ve rolled Baltar and Adama and hopefully Roslin will not be far behind. Martyn Smith Hi, As a collector of BSG figures (among others) I am always curious to know production volumes per figure….is there anyway I can find out? Regards Martyn DSTChuck: I’m sorry but DST does not release production runs for our action figures. The only occasional exception is a limited run for a convention or such. B’ R. Guys, I was getting so happy with the release of the TRU BSG wave, and seeing that sales were better, but on the recent Q&A you said series 4 was being cancelled?!?!? SERIOUSLY? That, to most of us fans, was the most important wave yet!!! Will we really not be seeing Roslin, Adama, and Cain?!?! Those are 3 of the best character! Please let us know you haven’t abandoned the best couple of all time! DSTChuck: The sales for the first version of BSG series 4 were not high enough to warrant production. We waited as long as we could for Sales to see if they could get more orders but there was little movement. I made the decision to cancel the existing wave and come back with a new wave that would allow us to go forward with a lower production cost than the original allowed and mix in a couple characters fans have requested from us several times. Mike L I’m not sure if I’ve brought this up before or not, but I guess it doesn’t hurt to say it again. Have you ever considered that you haven’t been able to get enough pre-orders for the Leader Series because you haven’t made them available for pre-order on your site? I know you’re going to say that they’re available on other sites, but a lot of people, myself included, just don’t trust some of the online toy distributers… I personally have had a lot of trouble with ordering through them, and I notice that the 2 packs are pre-order status, so that may have been a problem… We are all really bummed at the idea of not getting series 4. Is there ANY way to get Adama Roslin Cain and Apollo out??? DSTChuck: Mike, hopefully you are happy with the newly announced wave 4 since it has two of the characters you list. Thanks for your support of the DST web site, we do appreciate it, but we really try to downplay it as a source for consumers so we don’t compete with the retailers we supply. That said the qty we do order for our site is very small and would not affect the overall production run of a series of toys. Jason Chirevas Since you’ve expressed a desire to see the figure released, and the assortment at large is obviously going nowhere, is there a possibility of getting the Stargate SG-1 General Hammond figure out as an exclusive somewhere? DSTChuck: Jason, it’s very interesting, even when Stargate was going its best for us, we never had any real interest from retailers in exclusive figures. Callum Templeton 1.Out of all the Stargate figures so far, what has been the hardest to sculpt? 2.What is your favourite so far? 3.What alien race would you like to see made? 4.From Universe, which Characters do you like? and which would you like to see produced? Thanks DSTChuck: 1. I think we had the most trouble with the original gate, getting all the detail needed to make the correct chevrons and tooling it so it could easily go together or come apart was a process. 2. I think I am partial to the O’Neil figures, JSJ did a great job on the likeness and he was such a fun cool character on the show. 3. I think if I could pick a figure to get made it would be the guards from the last SG1 wave. 4. I have not seen enough SGU to decide on a favorite yet. Will Bueche A suggestion on how you can cook up a Baltar without resorting to using the Chief’s body (which IMO is too bulky for slim Baltar). Start with Leoben’s body. Delete Leoben’s untucked shirt overlay. Replace with the the upcoming green-fatigues Starbuck jacket overlay. Delete Leoben’s arms, replace with the Chief’s arms. Paint green. The result is Baltar as he appeared in the season one finale “Kobal’s Last Gleaming”, in which his Raptor crashed on Kobal and he later hallucinated the Opera House as he walked among the ruins. (He removed the jacket before he walked into the Opera House). The only iffy part to this is whether Starbucks’ green-fatigues jacket overlay has slight breast outdents, but since this is the soft plastic layer perhaps it would lay just fine over the Leoben chest. If not, that’s the only part of the ensemble that would need to be created. Thanks for studying this suggestion! DSTChuck: Thanks for the suggestion but the figures are not tooled at the factory in a way that would allow that recipe to work. Sorry instead we went with president Baltar. David Rowe Could you please, please, please start selling the new version P90s and TAC vests, from your SG-1/Atlantis 7″ figures on your website. DSTChuck: Right now we have no plans to offer accessory packs from any of our lines- but we have considered it from time to time. Christopher Flippin Hello, I was wondering if you guys would ever produce small die-cast BSG ships? I know yall could do better then Hasbro did. They really left use hanging when they stopped making the last year. DSTChuck: We’ve never made anything like that (though that has not stopped us in the past) and I think Hasbro still has the rights. Brian Petersen With Stargate Universe off to a good start, has there been any consideration for action figures? If so, would it also mean the continuation of Atlantis and SG-1 or would DST stick only to Universe? DSTChuck: We’ll have to let a little more time pass before we many any decisions. B.R. Thank you SO MUCH for getting rid of President Adama and replacing him with Baltar…best idea yet!!!! But please tell me that you’ll still be releasing Roslin?!?!? Please please please, she’s like the best character, and I can’t have Adama without his chick! Also, it says on the DST site that this mustache Adama is not to be confused with the TRU one…can you tell us when the TRU figure will be available? Starting to love you guys again!!!!! DSTChuck: I think we are very much looking to find a way to get Roslin out there somehow. Right now we’re waiting for the latest TRU order so I can’t say for sure but I think early next year is a good range. Agent 86 Dear DST, 1. Boomer - Firstly, I just want to note how lucky I am as a non-US fan to even have this figure. Despite DST’s assurances that the “Toys R Us” exclusive figures could be ordered internationally, the various stores that I approached about ordering these figures all denied that they were obtainable. As for the figure itself, what is up with Boomer’s head? It is tiny. Very tiny. When looking at the figure itself it is pretty glaring (since Grace Park is such a thin person and the body-sculpt with the “flared jacket” (thanks to the gun belt/holster) makes her look quite large), but when placed/posed with any other BSG action figure the difference in the size of their heads is very obvious and very distracting. I realize it is too late to do anything about it for this Boomer figure, but will the upcoming Boomer/Athena two-pack also share this smaller head-sculpt or will the heads on “Dress Blues” Boomer and “Flight Suit” Athena be more appropriately scaled with the other BSG action figures produced by DST? 2. Series 4 - Adama - I understand that DST have plans (or did have plans) to release the moustache-free Adama as a “Toys R Us” exclusive. Please, for the love of all things BSG, consider making moustache Adama a variant figure in series 4 so that we international fans have a fair chance of obtaining a moustache-free Adama. The “moustache-free” look is (IMHO) the iconic look for Adama. It would be highly appreciated if that figure were easily available for ALL BSG fans to collect, not just those fortunate enough to live in the US and also live near a “Toys R Us” with stock. 3. Series 4 - Baltar - Firstly, thank you for making a Baltar action figure. Secondly, is there any chance that the dimensions of Baltar’s proto-type head can be changed before going into production? Much like the “Toys R Us” exclusive Boomer, Baltar’s head appears to be small. Very small. Especially since it has been placed on a body sculpt intended for Apollo who is far more muscular than Baltar. If anything, Baltar’s head needs to be slightly over-sized so that his body looks smaller/thinner by comparison. The smaller head just makes the body sculpt look even more inappropriate. 4. Former Series 4 - Roslin - What is happening with Roslin? Has Roslin been moved to a new two-pack? I *really* want a Roslin and all BSG fans have been waiting a very long time to obtain that character. Will Roslin still be released? 5. D’Anna Biers - Because I’m that much of a nerd/fan - any change in the non-production/non-approval status of the D’Anna Biers action figure? With the BSG action figure line drawing to a close, I realise that chances are very slim that this figure will now be released, but I can’t help but ask if it is still possible. Thanks for your time. DSTChuck: Man you’re a fan all right! New rule: if it takes me longer to read your question than it takes a sculptor to sculpt the figure - I get candy. I don’t know what to tell you about your stores saying they can not get them but I sit in the meetings our sales guys have with our UK distributor and I proof read the sell sheets we send, I promise we are offering and many times selling them to a UK/ EU distributor. 1. I am sorry you are not happy with your Boomer figure, we make every effort to do the best job possible, as for the figures being in scale only JSJ has sculpted the BSG line, which in part has allowed the line to stay in scale each release. 2. We’ve gone back and forth so many times on the Adamas I think no matter what we decide we’re going to have some upset fans. 3. What we showed in Previews and on the web was just a mock up but I’ll be sure to double check the head on the Baltar as it goes along. 4. See above 5. Still no change in the status of Lucy Lawless. JP C Thanks for the gallery of BSG 4! That was a very interesting and appreciated look into the process of creating. I think Baltar looks extremely promising, but I had a quick question. Will the final Baltar design have him in the pinstriped presidential suit designed for Lee, or will he be in a more appropriate for Baltar all-black suit design? I know that photo was quickly Photoshopped together, so I wanted to raise the idea because it would help achieve the Baltar look. Also, visible from the thumbnail on the main page but not in the gallery, is that an Angel Gaius suit sculpt without the pockets and a different collar? Just wanted to lend my support to that version getting a release, especially if he comes with an upgraded red-dress Six! And finally, Laura Roslin? What is happening with that figure? Thanks! DSTChuck: Glad you like it I’ll pass it on to the folks at Jean St. Jean studios…we hope to be able to do more features like that on the Blog. You are correct that was just a PS mock up, the final suit will be black. Mike L Thank you guys for hearing us and putting out a Baltar figure. I’m still kind of upset to hear that the waves will be ending soon, so my questions pertain mostly to upcoming releases. - Will we see figure of all of the final 5 (Tori & Ellen)? -Will Roslin still be released soon???, we all really lover her! - Any idea on when the next wave of tru’s will be release i.e. Adama with no mustache and Tigh with eye patch? -Any insight on wave 5? Please? DSTChuck: I don’t think we’ll be able to complete the Final Five as we had hoped, but you never know…if The Plan ends up being a big hit and Caprica takes off you never know. IF you mean comic store wave 5, I think I’ll be happy to get the money of wave 4 off my back for now! B R Sorry guys, I forgot to ask something… Will the new Baltar figure have removable glasses as the Adama and (hopefully) Roslin figures? DSTChuck: Right now we do not plan to have removable glasses on the Baltar figure. Richard Bamford Hi, I have recently heard that your BSG series 4 figures have had a bit of a refit with Gaius Baltar stepping in to replace the slightly odd choice president Adama figure. is this true ?, if it is THANKYOU !!!. He is my favorite character of the series and im surprised its taken this long for him to make an appearance. I also have to say your BSG line are the best action figures about, its a pity about the excruciating delays but some things are worth waiting for, i hope you can get the remaining figures produced. Hope you can keep up the good work Regards Richard DSTChuck: Yes Baltar is in and Lee is out. We’ve always know we had to do Baltar, just didn’t end up with the right mix, and it’s now or never so…Again all our apologies for the delays. Roddy DeHart With ratings for Stargate Universe quite high and the new Atlantis movie scheduled for 2010 filming, has there been any update as far as the Stargate line is concerned? Especially a new/final Atlantis wave? Any possibility of seeing a Wraith Stunner pistol like your wonderful Star Trek phaser props? Thanks! DSTChuck: Signs look good! We’ll have to see and hopefully the movie happens, we’ve heard lots of stuff about more SG1 and Atlantis movies. Kushmeer Farakhan Hey guys. After seeing what the next wave of BSG figures are gonna be, I have a few questions.. 1. So we’re getting Adama, Cain, and Baltar? Baltar is great. Happy about him(plus, he was easy to make. Just swapping his head with President Apollo I guess. Good work). Cain is cool but why her over Roslin? Finally, I was hyped about Adama…until I saw that we’re getting mustached Adama. Why him and not the regular clean shaven, glasses one? 2. Is there going to be one more Toys R Us assortment? I bought the new Caprica Boomer, Off-duty Apollo, and Red Stripe Cylon. I want more. Who would be in it? 3. Judging by the little hints we’ve seen I’m gonna try to guess the rest of your line plan. Tell me how I do: After the Starbuck/Leobon, Athena/Boomer, and Tigh Gaeta you said you’d have two Cylons in a pack. That’ll be a Centurion and Cavill OR it’ll be a patchless Tigh and Ellen. Then the already announced series 4. That final two pack will be Roslin and either a regular Adama or a President Apollo. A final Toys R us wave could consist of President Apollo, another random Cylon robot, and possibly regular Adama or patchless Tigh. 4. Do we have any hope at all now of finishing off the Final Five? I would still love a Tory and Ellen to complete them. 5. You mentioned the line ending. Would it be possible to do maybe a 2-3 new figures a year as like website or online exclusives that fans could order in limited amounts? DSTChuck: 1. Kind of but we still need to too the suit body so it was more a making the best choice with the budget we had and if the line is not going to go as long as we thought, the thinking was it was better to get the fans their first Baltar then to produce ANOTHER Lee. 2. Cain was picked because we had already tooled the figure for what was going to be her initial release so by including her we could trick the budget and drive down the cost of the wave. We know lots of folks still want Roslin, and so do we. 3. You whiffed on the Cylon two pack. You may possibly be correct on the presidential two pack. I can’t say much more than that. 4. See earlier. 5. DST has no plans for online exclusives. Mike L I have a couple of questions referring to the statement that you’ll only be doing a few more Battlestar lines. 1. First, and most obvious…is this really true? Will there be no more bsg after series 5? 2. Does this mean we don’t get Roslin? 3. Any chance of a Zarek? 4. Will all the cylons be made? 5. Lastly… You had said there would be a couple more TRU figures (hopefully) Any chance of a Starbuck in her blues? It would only be the Starbuck head with the Boomer body, and if so, could you please use the longer haired Starbuck, I’d prefer a pony tail, but we can accept it if it’s too much budget. Thanks guys DSTChuck: 1. As of today yes it’s really true. 2. We’re going to do the best we can to get as much stuff as we’ve announced out and kind of take it fresh from there. 3. I can’t comment on specifics but I think its fair to say as of now Zarek is along shot. 4. We’re not going to be able to all the skin jobs anyway because of the licensing issues with Lucy Lawless. 5. That’s one of the few Starbuck looks we haven’t hit yet, so you never know.
