The TRU doesn't have anything interesting, but the BRU does.

TRU is opening up at 5PM on Thanksgiving day? Don't their employees have families to see on Thanksgiving?

Such is the life of a retail employee. When I worked at a video store, I worked Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve/Day, New Years Eve/Day. Not all every year, but usually 2-3 of those days every year. Now, hopefully, they're at least offering double pay for that time and that any employee working those times volunteered.

Volunteer? Ha. Not sure if they changed anything this year, but last year you had to work Thanksgiving/black Friday shift. Working the overnight hours (I think midnight to 6AM) gets you an extra $1 per hour. No 1.5x or 2x pay. Full time employees may get something but not part timers. |

Thanksgiving and Xmas are the only days retail employees have that are supposed to be a guaranteed day off. This working bullshit has got to stop. Soon stores will be opening up at 5pm on Xmas day. Worst part is also the managers who have to work split shifts. Managers that work on Thanksgiving 7pm-7am have to be back at 5pm to close.

None of this is new guys. Seriously, Kmart has been open all day on Thanksgiving for years, though usually at 7-8 AM. Plenty of other stores are open all day as well. CVS, Rite Aid, Walgreens, automotive stores, etc. It's a little late to be gettign bent out of shape about it now.

This is the first I heard about Toys R Us opening at 5pm also, guess I can cancel any turkey day plans.

Oh and I found out about Toys R Us opening at 5pm looking at that ad here. No mention of that at the store yet. I wouldnt be surprised to find that most the supervisors dont even know they are going to be at work at 3 or 4pm on thanksgiving yet.

Well looks like things changed this year. In my store at least they are staring with volunteers to work that first 5pm shift. We will get paid time and a half for thanksgiving as well. So I can't be quite so cynical now.

I think a lot of it stems from demand as well. Stores would not participate in these practices if consumers weren't lining up and coming out to shop in huge numbers. While it seems like a disturbing trend in retail, remember that retail exists in the first place to make money.
Having said all that, I am not going out anywhere on Thanksgiving Day. I might on Friday though if I am feeling brave enough.

Once you get past the first 2 hours, it becomes basically just like a busy weekend. Two years ago I strolled into Best Buy on Black Friday, around 11AM, as they were having a good deal on TV I wanted. I was in and out in less than 20 minutes.
