At this point, I'm not sure what to tell you given Mattel's line is done, expensive if you want to go back and get the earlier stuff, and DC only cares about the New 52.

A good place to start is what do you like? Are you into the more obscure DC characters? Superman stuff? Batman? Green Lantern? Teen Titans? You should start with a Baseline bc if you want everything, be sure to sell your house/kidney/kids bc its expensive.

I've just seen various DC brands on six inch figs and i wasn't sure if they were different or all under one bigger brand. Direct, universe, injustice, unlimited, etc...

Kain is right as of right now the DC Mattel brand by 4 Horsemen is done. DC direct might be a better choice.
DC Direct is DC's own line sometimes called DCC or DC Collectables. Mattel makes (still does till 12/31) or made DCsH, DCUC, DCUCAS, DCAS, DCSS(CIE), and DCUl/BMUl lines all have or will end soon

Universe, Injustice, Unlimited are by Mattel so they they all match if you plan to display them. Direct, now DC Collect have less articulation which means they are meant to be statues have more detail on them. And for example, the DC Collectibles Flash is slightly bigger than the DC unlimited so there are size differences as DC collectibles recently are 6.5-6.75 inches. Some people dont mind mix and matching all these, some hate it. I suggest googleing collections or them both and see if they like to mix and match them.
I have a DC direct hush nightwing and a dc direct robin because I refuse to pay ridic $ for nightwing and robin and I don't mind it. If there isnt something you HAVE to get and you got started near the New 52 and it is what you know best, I would say stick with DC Collectibles bc they are continuing that line and Mattel is done with DC figures for adults. It is going to be a pain in the ass to collect the old Mattel stuff. Again I can't tell you exactly what direction you should go bc I don't know your DC tastes. My gf is into batman so she got the new 52 batman and preordered that DC villains box for catwoman and joker and preordered harley quinn. Next is the capullo batman, nightwing, and talon figures. and she had 0 stress doing this and she isnt paying so much to build her batman collection. |

I started reading new 52 so i'm going from there. I like all batman related characters. i also don't want to spend a big chunk of money for one figure and i'm unaware which is more expensive.

Start with Batman New 52, Joker (If you want Catwoman then you have to get the villains pack which has a reskinned joker). Harley quinn. Capullo Batman/Nightwing/Talon.

Yeah, they aren't at retail anymore but it really depends on what you like. I prefer 3.75" but I gave in and decided it wasn't going to happen so I started buying figures in February of this year. I pretty much am just focusing on GL characters and then the majors like Batman, Superman, etc. In about two months I had a nice little line up. I have a LCBS that had/has a number hanging around so that helped as there wasn't much I wanted at retail. I did some trades, bought stuff from people in the community and cheap ebay sellers from Asia. If you are looking to get stuff loose you can do it somewhat cheaply but MOC will cost you a lot depending on what you want. I would just say to pick a team or small set of characters that you want and slowly look for deals. People selling large lots of loose DCUC figures on ebay can sometimes be a great deal if you save up.
I've got a handful of JL and Young Justice figures displayed elsewhere. The only figures there that I paid retail or higher for were Larfleeze, Saint Walker, and GL Kyle. Everything else I got on sale at the LCS or bought used. Still don't have everything I want but I'm working on it.

Mattel seems to be done. So the line is completable. It encompasses DC Superheroes, 20 waves of DC Universe Classics, two years of Club Infinite Earths Subscription figures, two waves of Green Lantern Classics, DC Allstars, Batman Legacy (Two waves), Batman Unlimited, and DC Unlimited. Many of the figures you seem most interested are actually available now. New 52 Batman and Superman, Wonderwoman, Batgirl, Aquaman (All of them new 52)
Second hand prices vary on popularity of the figures. DC Direct/DC Collectables however has been going since the late ninties (or close to). Sometimes figures come and go and no one ever sees them, then they immidiately start fetching $80 second hand (Stephanie Brown Batgirl is a good example). The line is huuuuge... and they focus on different artistic styles (One DCD line may focus on a Jim Lee style, another an Ed McGuinness style). The articulation isn't as bad as everyone likes to whine about. It's usually not as good as DCUC, but they're far from "statues." I would give a breakdown on prices, but since the Mattel line is at it's end, there's not much point. DCD/DCC usually is more expensive, since they're sold exclusively through specialty shops, like online toystores and comic shops. So with that line, stores usually hike prices up on popular characters. It basically depends on where your interests are. But the two lines aren't as incompatable as some may say. Sure, DCD Flash looks rediculous next to DCUC Superman... but if you used a DCD Wonder Woman... the scale would be pretty good. Also they've hit up tons of characters Mattel never did. For instance, many DCD Lanterns look great with DCUC. Brother Warth and Indigo, Star Sapphire Wonderwoman, Sinestro Corps Mongul, Salaak, Orange Lantern Lex Luthor, various DCD Black Lanterns... Some like Indigo, Warth, Salaak, and the Black Lanterns just don't exist from Mattel. While Wonder Woman, Luthor, and Mongul... their sizes look great in a Mattel display. So really, it depends on what your personal tastes are, combined with what meets your interests most. DCD will be a much more expennsive line to collect. Mattel though, will likely leave "holes" in your collection. But ultimately, buy what you like. If you like the looks of a toy, and find it's price reasonable, then chances are you're going to enjoy it.

Buy what you want, you can go for statues, imports such as revoltech, play arts kai, which have better articulation and paint but cost you a lot/figure. The older waves will cost you more then retail/lcs items, keep that in mind if you plan to display/collect MOC. Loose figures can be found in bulk lots on ebay and work out deals with fellow arkers. I'd say get a core Justice League made, display wise looks awesome, and then you can branch off into getting a batman universe, or superman, or green lantern etc.... I don't collect DC, I'm pretty much all Marvel, but if I decided to get into collecting them I'd be into getting the different lantern corps figures, and get the DC 52 figures moc, and get into some batman arkym asylum stuff and play arts kai. My LCS has some play arts and dc52 stuff, very tempting, but I'm not going to give into these sidelines,... I got 2 many awesome deals on the go as it stands that's bleeding my wallet dry.

Okay, then Dc Direct and DC collectibles are the way to go. Is there anything from mattel that is compatible with those two lines?

The problems with Mattel are a Long list unless your willing to suffer heartburn, Migrains, and lose sleep. In the DCC/DCD lines not really the compatibility is low. The DCD Female figures are the same Size as DCUC Males

To be fair though, Mattel didn't care about scale either 90% of the time.

They're done with DCUC, but they're going to start a 4" line that they say is supossed to be on par with DCUC articulation wise. However, they're starting that line exclusively with Batman Arkham game stuff. In otherwords, like Infinite Heroes they're trying to figure out a way to kill it before it has a chance to even take off.

Some are. Like the new Cyborg being bigger works... but that like 1 out of 100. If I was ForcePhantom, and didn't have ANY DC figures at all I would go with the DCC line.

I wouldn't say the line is done I would say it's barely on life support nearing flat line. Mattel lost a fan base everything is on a maybe basis go with DCC/DCD

The fact is, they are making a 4" adult collector line that they "say" is on par with DCUC. It is dedicated (at least for the first three waves) to Arkham City/Assylum/whatever. Whether you like this fact or not does not change the fact that it exists. As a fact, that does not scream to me that they are focusing exclusively on chuildren, as 8 year olds don't (or at least shouldn't) be playing brutally violent games like those. You are confusing these with the current kids Batman and JL lines that are on the shelves, that Mattel says they're going to support more. You can feel however you want, and you're perfectly welcomed to hate them, as you seem to hate everything else in existance. But it does not change what Mattel has during SDCC. I will now return you to my ignore list perminantly this time, as you are completely unable to say anything of significance or provide any validation to any conversation. Have a good life, if you're able to. (But I don't see how. You're just too miserable in this existance.) I bid you Adieu.
