It works for the animated figures to help maintain their look.

Most animated guys would not look right with ball joint hips, the break would be too obvious especially on anyone with a suit. The girls could do it, but like Two-Face or Joker would look bad. Being based specifically on a cartoon means that when a male figure in the line is standing straight they should have very straight lines along their body. The live-action and some comics toys should go ahead and upgrade to ball hips but in general the animated aesthetic benefits from basic swivel or H-cuts for the hips. Also the animated figures have minimal sculpts so there isn't much detail to "ruin" in the first place.

Since the animated figures are very stylized, it's more the general aesthetic of the figure that is ruined by these leg/hips articulations. Compare the old Kenner TAS Catwoman with the recent DCC one, the V cut at the hips doesn't break the lines of the figure like the "Mattel-like" are doing. |
