Actually that brings up a question. Would you need the likeness rights from Karl Urban to make a figure. I mean, you never see his whole face (as it should be) or would the chin be enough to warrent a royalty payment?

And then there's George Lucas, who owns all the merchandising rights to all Star Wars films through Lucasfilm, Ltd. He also doesn't need any permission from Ford, Hamill or Fisher to make figures with their likenesses on them.

It depends on what kind of contract Urban signed when he agreed to do the movie. Some actors have a clause in it that gives him or her final approval over any merchandise made with his/her likeness on it (even if it's only part of his/her face). Other contracts leave it solely to the discretion of the movie studio.

The box office was terrible, even after good reviews and a lot of geek buzz. I am guessing a lot of the audience for this movie will wait to see it or download it illegally, which is why they made this movie on the super cheap and a sequel won't likely happen. When I was in my early 20's I would be a new movie every week with a bunch of friends but nowadays there are just so many options for us and less time.

I read Lionsgate want it to make 50 million at the box office. So far it's pulled in 14. Unless it's aimed at 14 year olds, movies, especially genre movies, have a tough time pulling the crowds in. Like Iceman mentioned, most people prefer to wait for dvd or netflicks to see a movie now.
The 3D isn't essential to enjoying the movie, but there are a couple of scenes where it looks brilliant. And I can't even stand a 3DS screen. Like Scott Pilgrim, it could make the money back on dvd sales. But I don't see a sequel happening ... a single, manly tear |
