Hey guys been a huge marvel/dc fan for years now. Wanted to get into collecting superhero figures hoping I could get some help. Hot Toys are by far the best action figures I have ever seen in my life just a litte out of my price range unfortunately. Im looking for the next best thing any ideas I can get from you seasoned pro's. So far im going with S.H. Figuarts from Bandai they seem the best quality and have great movement to make them pose differently. Anyone got info on other lines I can research before I decide? Thanks!!!

So you want realism, then Hot toys is your best bet , the japanese import toys are your second choice. Either way you will be spending alot of $$$ , I suggest holding off every 2-3 months since your budget is 50-100 , then start off with your first purchase of Hot toys building up your collection. Since you dont want the "normal" walmart , toy r us toys (we actually call these "toys" , retail action figures ) then youre gonna miss out on a lot of different Marvel/DC characters, to me thats important if I am a huge fan of both Marvel/DC. With Hot toys you get realsim but LIMITED character selection, with the "normal toys" you get LIMITED realism (but to tell you the truth the sculpts are getting much better and they look very close to what they look like in the comics/movies where they are based at, the realism you get with Hot Toys is actual clothing and hair for the female charcaters) but in exchange you'll get hundreds of character selections. Either way goodluck and happy collecting.

Hot Toys are high quality dolls. Change their clothes and brush their hair. Sure they look great but take up a LOAD of space and you usually only get movie figures. SH figures are nice but there are not many comic ones. So it depends on your definition of realism. Is it a Hulk that looks like his first appearance or one that looks exactly like Mark Ruffalo? To me I like to have several characters, so the normal lines suit me best. I am 3.75" collector through and through. I like vehicles and dioramas, something you can't get in other scales.
Whatever way you go and which ever path you choose...... You will look back and laugh (or cry) when you thought you could budget it to fifty bucks a month!!!!! These toys are like crack. Your collection will never be enough. It will never end. You will buy things to only put them in tubs away in an attic. It is an insane amount of time and energy searching them out, researching the past, present and future of your chosen line. The displaying, the posing and reposing because of falls, and the dust..... My god the dust. If you were smart you would not open Pandoras Box and run away while you still can...... Don't say you weren't warned!!! If you choose to stay..... Decide just what scale you are willing to commit to. Factor in size and display cases and shelving options. 1/6 scale 1/12 scale 1/18 scale are your common options. Some fall in between and some aren't true to the actual scale. I think you already know what you want. Go with your gut. It is also nice collecting the "normal" lines as you stated because you can find them and pick between a few of them. It is fun to pose them, but if there is no one to fight then why pose them?

I would definitely not call Hot Toys action figures, they're more like investments. Like little, detailed mannequins you buy to display. SH also has big selection limits, they tend to focus on Japanese licenses. They did some Iron Man figures and they're doing some for AoU but only Iron Man hits the mark. They barely do DC either and most of what they do is very stylized.
Diamond Select offers a much more affordable Marvel deal, less pose but more accurate and more selection than SH. DCC is the best way to get DC figures that aren't play-things but they tend to be fragile. Mattel's DC 6" figures are also a popular pick for collectors here, but they do border into the more Marvel Legends like state of kinda collectible and playable. No single Marvel toy line offers selection like Hasbro but you've stated you don't want that stuff. Hot Toys is 1/6 scale. Pros: really great detail, display oriented, good accessories. Cons: arguably pricey (depending on personal opinion), not actually action figures technically, more space consumed from size. SH is closer to 6" scale usually. Pros: pose, accessories, size and space taken. Cons: price for size, very limited selection for Marvel and DC, tendency to stylize (dependent on opinion). Marvel Select is 7" scale. Pros: detail for size, cost, better selection, less space consumption. Cons: limited pose, still not a vast selection. DC Collectibles is also usually 7" scale but sometimes 6" I think. Pros: good selection, varying styles (comics, games, etc.), size and space. Cons: pose varies from figure to figure sometimes, reportedly fragile (line by line analysis varies).

I figured I could lend my 2 cents as well.
Hot Toys are incredible looking, way too much money for me to collect, but truly works of art. Personally if you want realistic then Hot Toys are the only option. I also love the SH Figuarts they are really cool, but to me these are often a bit more stylized so they do not resemble the source material as much as other lines, plus I am fairly sure the only Figuarts as of this writing are Iron Man and War Machine/Iron Patriot with the Avengers releasing either later this year or early next year. Which leads me to my next point. You are looking for nice posability which I assume would be for display, but there are currently no villians available from Figuarts, and I haven't heard of any announced yet either. I too collect 3.75" for cost, space, and the variety of characters. If you only like Iron Man and Batman you should go to Hot Toys they have them covered, but if you enjoy the entire universe's these guys exist you need to look into the retail store lines. Lastly if you are looking to spend $50-$100 there are a ton of older Toy Biz Legends (6" scale) that sell for more and tons that sell for less so that price range is good for that line. Plus the articulation is top notch on the Toy Biz ones, Hasbro took over the line at some point and some articulation has been lost, but overall the posability with Legends is probably your best option. Thank you guys so much for the input! I love this place and the people.. So I'm mostly going to collect iron man more modern day things so Like avengers batman superman joker etc.. I really want ones that look real and can be moved around to.make different poses and come with accessories... s.h. figuarts look like the only option I just came across another line called play art by square Enix? They look pretty awesome too.. I would love hot toys but it doesn't look like I would be able to afford em saving up is some thing I'm not too good at lol... I like the 6 inch models I will prob end up getting 1 or 2 hot toys a year from my wife for a bday gift or a aniversery gift...

Square Enix is the stylization king (I don't like it but that's an opinion). The Bane they did for TDKR looks like he came right out of Street Fighter or something. Their Flash figure has high heels.

I commend you for aiming a little higher and not wanting to settle for the basic retail figures.
But still, like a lot of other guys pointed out, since you like Marvel, don't completely rule out Marvel Legends. A HUGE benefit of sticking mostly to Hot Toys, Figuarts, etc... that no one has mentioned yet is that you will largely be able to avoid the time-consuming hassle of hunting store-to-store for figures. Lol, just today, while hunting, I spent over $50 on gas and Red Bull. So, if you are budget-minded, your approach will save you tons of time and gas money, and the cash you save on gas will help offset the prices of the expensive figures you're into. But anyways, enjoy your new hobby! We look forward to you showing off some of those Figuarts figures in the "Look What I Just Got" thread

Also the word you're looking for when it comes to movement of the figure is "articulation". Sh figuarts are fantastic.. I have all of the power rangers MMPR figures and they're absolutely perfect. But no matter what it's going to be trial and error, we could point you in a million different directions, but you're the one who is going to pick something and give it a try. Also, revoltech figures are quite nice, they can be a little fiddly, but they look great. Youtube is VERY helpful, just about every toy is reviewed on youtube, so, if something looks cool, search for a review of it. |

Thanks for all the info guys. I think im going to go with S.H. Figuarts and maybe play kai batman and joker... Hopefully the 1 hot toy a year. Is it a good idea to keep the box and everything or do you just throw them out? Also when buying S.H. figuarts in Canada what is the best website to buy them off? Is there fakes going ground do I have to be cautious? Also thanks Timothy I was looking for that word lol Articulation.
Edit - Also Diamond select, Marvel Select, DC collectibles all look good but it seems S.H. figuarts look better and come with extras like blast for iron man etc. Does any other lines do that come with extra head for different design etc? Edit #2 - Wow play art kai has some krazy looking figures. Is the articulation as good as the S.H. figuarts? S.H. Vs Play Art who would you chose? Figuarts are awesome, I would recommend keeping those boxes since they are more collector friendly with repackaging compared to a normal blister and card packaging. Check out the captain America, iron man, and Thor from Figma, the articulation, paint apps, accessories are all ridiculous awesome. Unfortunately, if you only buy the Japanese figures you are very limited to selection and most the figures will be based off movies or video game franchises. If you're a comic fan you will be disappointed because you won't see these figures resemble their comic form. Additionally, a lot of the import figures for 6in scale aren't allowed to be sold Directly in the US due to license rights with Hasbro. This means you will have to go through larger collector/toy websites that import them in themselves and typically charge a premium for them such as bbts or tfsource/toysource or order them directly from Japan from. So fair warning for you, collecting import figures gets pretty pricey, especially if you are going back and buying figures that aren't in current production. For whatever it's worth, just buy figures that you think are cool and you really like. I wouldn't limit myself to any specific toy line. |

Is there fakes going ground do I have to be cautious? Most SH figuarts fakes that i've seen are on the sailor moon line. If youre buying it from a reputable online dealer like BBTS I wouldn't worry too much about fakes. I would worry more about the sellers from ebay with little to no feedback. Also Diamond select, Marvel Select, DC collectibles all look good but it seems S.H. figuarts look better and come with extras like blast for iron man etc. Does any other lines do that come with extra head for different design etc? The Japanese import figures truly excel in the small details and accessories but they also typically cost twice or triple the price of hasbro, dc, marvel, mattel offerings. Plenty of Marvel Legends figures come with additional heads/ interchangeable hands etcs. Marvel Select figures typically include a nice base or accessories (but remember these are 7inch scale). Edit #2 - Wow play art kai has some krazy looking figures. Is the articulation as good as the S.H. figuarts? S.H. Vs Play Art who would you chose? Articulation is good with play kai arts but these are 9inch figures compared to 6 inch figures. I would personally just stick with S.H. Figuarts since most of my collection of figures is 6inch and I like my figures in scale together... even tho most figuarts figures are smaller than legends. Play Kai Arts figures get a little too stylized for me. If your looking for Figuarts, check out the injustice Batman and Joker. They are still in production right now so the prices should still be in the 40-50 range and you can pick them up from amazon very easily. They also have a real bad ass Harley Quinn coming out in the summer to match up with joker. |

Thank you guys so much for the great feedback. Im thinking S.H. Figuarts it is even tho the Play Art Line looks amazing Im thinking 9" would be a little too big. Edit - You think they will start releasing more S.H. Figuarts or is it a slow proccess? Play Art does have all the characters I want such as Iron man/Batman/CapAmerica/ Thor/Superman/Spiderman/flash and a few bad guys.... Damittttttt lol

If your a marvel fanboy, play Kai arts is not a line you should get into. I think they are releasing 2-3 figures this year of marvel characters (for the first time ever) And they are way too stylized compared to their tradition costumes. If your worried about selection, seriously consider marvel legends or marvel select. Both these lines are targeted towards adult collectors and older kids. Here's a pic of the Thor, Captain America, and Iron man from Figma mixed in with other marvel legends. I highly recommend you look into picking up these Figma guys if you want a good import marvel licensed toy. |
