It's looking like he'll be in the second one. I think it's titled The Desolation of Smaug.

It's a complete farce that they want to stretch this out to 3 movies. The Hobbit contains far less than LOTR did so it's just a money grab. Damn Hollywood.
I do love me some dwarves and the Hobbit was my favorite book as a kid but I think they've made a the dwarves too dark. I always imagine brighter looks for most of them even if maybe it isn't practical. I think a few of these would work well with Thor figures.

It's three movies including a lot of content from the appendices - The White Council, Dol-Guldur and the Necromancer - and you know how PJ has a penchant for large battle so expect way more of the Battle of Five Armies than you though possible. I'm totally fine with three movies. I love Jackson's take on Middle Earth and couldn't get enough of the special features and extended editions, so I can't see an additional movie as anything but a good thing. It just means there's going to be far less left on the cutting room floor.
As for the toys, I wouldn't expect to see Smaug this time around. He'll likely be the focal point of the second movie, so he'll likely be out for that. And since he's likely to be very big, I'm sure thy'll save something oversized for the holiday season, when folks are more ikely to spend more money on big ticket items. As for the rest, I'm psyched! I've got the 1/18 figure pre-ordered, at least the ones planned for release on 10/1. there are many more that I can't wait to get my hands on as well, especially the beast packs, trolls, Legolas, and more. I hope we see pics of other stuff soon and I still have my fingers crossed for the Lotr trilogy figures. Here's hoping that three movies across two holiday seasons and one summer blockbuster season will keep Tolkien figures on the shelves for at least three years!

They announced it at SDCC because they done went and shot way too much footage lol. I do believe that they won't be 3 hours each like LOTR was but more like 1:45-2 hours which makes me think they could have kept it at two movies. Film studios hate long movies as it limits the number of showings and the ticket prices aren't any higher.

I hope these are readily available. I'm not a big enough Tolkien fan to preorder, but I would be happy to pick these up a little bit at a time.

The Hobbit has as much stuff going on but is told much more simply than LOTR was- there's a year's worth of crazy adventures- the intro through the flight from the goblins will probably fill the whole first movie. The second movie will be meaty though- the Wood Elves, Boatmen and Smaug. The last movie will be the three-way clusterfuck war and return to the Shire. Makes sense to me. As to these toys...interesting. For them to be 3.75" scale they'll have to be like 2.5" tall!

To be fair, the movie would be insane and rushed in one movie- it would be like the old Rankin Bass animated movie.
As to the expansion of other characters, my roomate says a lot of that comes from Tolken's Samirillian, which I never read. Too dry. Whatever the additions or expansions, I trust Jackson to make the movies incredible- that first trailer gave me shivers!

Hmmm...you can almost do a LOTR Avengers thing- Tony as Gandalf, Steve as Aragorn, Clint as Legolas, etc.

Now when they are releasing him is another thing in itself. They mentioned him before the movie was split. |

I dont see how they can make a 1:18th scale Smaug- by any reasonable estimate it would be at least 4' across at the wing!
I think we might get a nice toy in a "box scale"- which would stickk kick ass, as I'd make a MU Morganna LeFey to ride on it's back and menace my assembled heroes (she really hates Iron Man!)

I'm sure they're making a Smaug. Unlike the balrog, which was a cool monster that fans fought long and hard for and eventually got one from Neca, Smaug is a main character, a voiced character, and now a titular character - the second film is called "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug."
Since he is one of titular characters of the second film I don't know how much of him we'll see in the first, which is why I don't believe we'll see his toy on shelves this winter. I wonder if we'll even see a mold at Toy Fair in February or if they'll save it for an SDCC reveal. As to the size, I don't know exactly what PJ's scale is. I'm sure he'll be huge, but in scale may mean ML Fin Fang Foom size for the 1/18 figures. The trickiest part will undoubtedly be the wings, which will suffer the most from the scale issue. My favorite dragon wings so far have been on the Mega Bloks Battlemorph Dragon Eggs. They're large but articulated well so that they can fold up and hug the body. Hopefully Bridge Direct does something like that rather than large unarticulated wings like Neca's Balrog or single point articulated wings like most dragon toys (chap mei, Avatar TLA, Dragonheart, etc.).
