After school was another great line-up! (It sucked when I had to stay after school in detention! It seemed my name was always written on the chalkboard! ) Mine went: 3:30 - Transformers 4:00 - G.I. Joe 4:30 - He-Man 5:00 - M.A.S.K. Those were the days..............

I don't know, at least a couple of those cartoons strike me as being as crappy as today's stuff. :P
Ah, the stuff I loved to watch on Saturday mornings... X-Men Spider-Man (Fox) Power Rangers TMNT (the CBS run was my favorite) ReBoot Men in Black Godzilla TAS Batman Beyond Animaniacs Pinky and the Brain Tiny Toon Adventures One of my favorite times to watch cartoons later on, though, was actually Sunday mornings. The block of cartoons didn't last nearly as long and usually was where more of the crap got shoveled, but there were gems like Battletech, Dragonball Z, Creepy Crawlers (man, did that one suck), The Incredible Hulk, and my favorite, Beast Wars. |

Here's the best (Not all were Saturday Morning).
GI Joe Transformers Smurfs (Remember when the purple smurf infected everyone "Gnat! Gnat!"? That was our introduction to the aids virus. Gummy Bears (Theme song: Gummy bears... bounc'n here & there & everywhere... high adventure that's beyond compare... they are the gummy bears!!!") Thundercats Dungeons & Dragons (eye of the beholder episode was my favorite) HE-Man Snorks Spider Man Q-Bert All good shat!!!

Unfortunately, a lot of the shows back then just don't hold up today without a healthy dose of nostalgia. Not that that's a bad thing - I love my G1 Transformers
But these were the shows that would make me drag my ass out of bed at 6 AM every Saturday morning: Transformers G.I.Joe He-Man Thundercats M.A.S.K. Silverhawks Thundarr the Barbarian (may have aired on Sundays)

The original ninja turtles is still funny, but in new ways. As a child I never questioned why this "Shredder" fellow wore a suit of armor in present day. And his ludicrous line of questioning: "Did they look like reptiles?" "Were they turtles? I must know!"

Heck, Saturday morning was the best time ever back then. I even remember fondly the prime time specials every fall on the major networks premiering their new cartoon lineups.
Robotix, the ewoks, star wars droids, the original pound puppies, smurfs, he man, transformers, visionaries, M.A.S.K., even GoBots. So great. |

Does anyone remember Freakazoid? To this day it is the most random & crazy cartoon. They would be in the middle of a scene then cut to a field of flowers. Freggin crazy! I use to laugh my ass off! Qui a coupe le fromage?

How about Eek the Cat? I used to freakin LOVE that show! It was one of the last cartoons I used to watch on a regular basis. Came out not too long before Freakazoid, if I remember correctly. |

I remember Freakazoid! Was a WB show. By the time that show came out I wasn't watching as many cartoons anymore, but I did catch it a couple of times and really enjoyed it. It was pretty awesome.

I can actually remember sneaking downstairs at 5am to watch the original Superfriends and trying not to wake my folks as I made a bowl of cereal so yeah I really miss them and feel that my daughter is missing out. On top of that I'm really becoming disturbed with all the "cartoon" channels moving away from cartoons. Looks like cartoons may like print become somewhat of an outdated thing. Cartoon Network is moving quickly away, Toon Disney became Disney XD, we don't get Boomerang around here, so it's kinda sad.

Agreed! Saturday morning cartoons sure aren't what they used to be.
I'd say I probably only watch a handful of today's cartoons... Transformers Prime, Young Justice, Clone Wars and Spongebob. And the first three are watched due to the fact that I grew up with their older brothers, so they have a big nestalgia factor. |

I agree on missing saturday morning cartoons. The only network left that still does it only airs bad anime, now.
And as has been pointed out, in general most cartoon focused channels are moving away. Toon Disney was great. DisneyXD, not so much. (I got bored and counted once, one week. In that week there were less than two dozen different programs. The majority of it was I'm in the Band, and Suite Life). And I'm sorry, a network called Cartoon Network should not have live action programs. Nicktoons still has it going on, though (But just barily), at least. The hub has a LOT of potential, if they get some more variety under their belts. And I've been saying for years that Scifi Channel (Syfy now. Ugh. There's a whole 'nother can of worms there) really shoudl start a retro saturday morning block, bringing back a lot of these older cartoons like Heman, Shera, Pirates of Dark Water, Gobots, and other stuff. (Syfy needs more variety anyway. Get the hell away from those godaweful movies.)

Teletoon has really changed as well. Miss the mornings when Johnny Bravo, Ned's Newt and stuff like that was on Satuday mornings. YTV isn't airing anything all that great on Saturday's with, in my opinion, the acception of Spongebob, and Fox Kids I don't think even exists anymore. The mornings on Fox featuring Beast Wars, The Whacky World of Tex Avery and Sonic the Hedgehog are all gone for good nowadays.
*Sigh* I'll just come out and say that for the most part, today's cartoons for kids really suck! |
