I want to open them and it seems to me like the majority of collectors don't want them opened. So would I be in an exclusive group that opens them? Also is it impossible to sell them if their opened?

I say go ahead and open them. I open literally everything I get with no thought toward future resale. This hobby is about having fun. Don't stress over this. And as far as Star Wars goes, there's so much out there thatt keeping them MIB is not going to help them hold their value all that much anyway. So free them, handle them, make little dioramas with them, put them up at your desk at work, whatever! Just stop worrying and have fun. And if you do decide you want to sell them later, have a yard sale. I've had two where I've sold Star Wars figures for a buck a piece, and they flew both times. Hope this helps.

I agree with MikeP. I open all of my stuff, even stuff that most people would cry over the fact that I opened it.
But I do add that, if you want to make a good deal of money off of your collection at some point then that would be the only reason to not open it, but then at that point you should be taking EXTREME measures to protect your stuff and then there is not a lot of joy in the collection itself. If you are more concerned about at some point tabout just trying to get rid of them or make a quick buck, then there will always be ways to do that. |

You cannot make much for newer toys unless they are very rare exclusives.
Pretty much everything in between is going to go for a few dollars more or less unopened. If you love action figures, and you love to play with them (pose them, display them), then I would say buy the characters you like the most and open them. The thing that most collectors forget is that the only thing worth any REAL money is really old and pristine toys. Vintage Star Wars...Vintage G.I. Joe...etc. etc. This is the same with comic books. I laugh at the people who collect now-a-days and think that they are going to turn a big buck for their collection of "SIEGE" or "SECRECT INVASION"...These are newer...they only sell for pennies on the dollar. Older comics are where money is...and again...they have to be pretty damn mint. SO, decide on what you want....a little more money? or a great collection and display...

I would say collect what you love, ultimately you work for your $$$ to if your dropping money on toys, buy what draws your eye and catches at your heart because opened or not you have to live with them. Star wars has tons of merchandise ranging from vintage and rare to common and new, so I would say either pick the character(s) you like such as a nice yoda collection or vintage collection etc, there's 2 much merchandise to collect it all so pick what you like, and my rule of thumb if I spend over a certain $ amount on 1 toy I judge to see if its worth keeping in the package or not. If u hear that a variant is rare and there's 2 on the shelf and you can afford it buy 1 to open and 1 to keep, so your the collector make your own judgment call, I will say though that collections look cooler opened then left in package

I think the majority of people on this site prefer to open their toys. I know I do. So, I think you'd be in good company by opening up your collection and actually enjoying it.
Also, as Johnnyakiba mentioned, only the old stuff is going to be really valuable. The only reason collectibles end up being valuable is directly related to how rare an item is. The old stuff is so valuable because people didn't think about toys and comics as collectible items. For the most part they were regarded as junk and therefore not taken care of or straight up thrown away. Today, those old items hold value because there are not many of any particular item in good condition. With the toys that come out today (Star Wars, Marvel, etc) they are so mass produced that the likelihood of an item being really rare is not high, unless of course it is intentionally a variant or has a low production run. There will always be some exceptions, but I think for the most part nothing that comes out today is going to fetch anywhere near the sums of some of the older stuff. If you're interested in buying some Star Wars stuff I say you should go ahead and do so. And open those suckers while you're at it!! Last edited by ludovicotek; 08-21-2010 at 04:18 PM.. |

Exclusives and limited runs usually are more pricey...but depends on how the demand is!! The new "SLAUGHTER" retail release is going to be awsome! BUT! Opened my variant! DAMN YOU HASBRO!!

Collecting Star Wars toys can be quite a commitment, depending on what you have in mind. I used to collect really hardcore back when the 1995 Power of the Force line debuted. I also bought two of every single pack figure (opened one, stored the other) for a number of years.
Then one day I decided that it just didn't appeal to me like it did when I first started. There were so many figures (some of the same ones done multiple times with new sculpts, accessories, etc) that I began to run out of space to keep them. It didn't help that pricing on them, as others here have mentioned, weren't all that spectacular. New toys are manufactured in such high numbers these days, that the supply is usually more than enough to meet the demand and prices in the secondary market tend to reflect that. So I got out of collecting Star Wars hardcore and now only buy figures here and there that I like, which usually involves the characters Darth Vader, Luke and Yoda. Personally, if you're going to get into the collector's market on any toy line, there are some rules you should follow: 1. Be passionate for whatever lines you collect. If you don't like the source material or the toys themselves, what's the point? If your only goal is to make money off them, you'd be better off opening a toy store than starting a collection. 2. Whether you open them or not is entirely up to you. If you want to open a toy, then go for it. If you want to keep it sealed, that's your decision too. Don't worry about what others might think. It's your money, your collection, your choice. 3. Set specific short-term and long-term goals for your collection; don't try to go all out at once, especially with Star Wars or other long-running toy lines. There's just too much product and it can overwhelm you. Try to avoid thinking "I gotta get them all" (even if what you collect is Pokemon). Start with a narrow focus like a specific character, team, sub-line, packaging style or even just a single wave. 4. For older toys, be smart with your money. Shop around and make sure you have a good idea on what a toy is worth in the secondary market. 5. Be patient. Some collections can take a long time to build. Doubly so if it involves vintage, rare or exclusive items. 6. Remember that you decide when your collection is complete. Try not to fall into the open-ended collection abyss. It's not pretty down here. 7. HAVE FUN! I cannot stress this enough. Enjoy your hobby, because that should be the main (if not only) reason you get into this. If it ever starts to feel like something you have to do instead of something you want to do, then it may be time to think about quitting. I hope my ramblings have at least helped you a little in some way. Star Wars collecting can be a lot of fun, but it can also be very demanding at times. Enjoy whatever you decide to do - that's the best advice I can give. EDIT: I open just about everything. Sometimes I will keep the packing and re-box certain toys (usually exclusives with resealable packaging). For certain characters, I might even buy one to keep MISB/MOSC and one to open. But nearly all of my collection has been opened because that's how I choose to enjoy it.

Well spoken words Treb!!!
I highly agree with your tips! I think there are tons more too! But I have the same problem. When should I quit? For Joe, I stopped buying EVERYTHING...now it's pick and choose.

I think it's time to quit when your buying toys for the sake of buying them and not to add to the collection to help it be complete in some way or shape. But it ultimately depends on what you collect there will be some people that $$ or availability isn't a problem even with rare items, and if you narrow your search to a specifc line or wave and u collect them all, then you need to broaden the collection or be content with what you have

customizing does fill the void that buying and collecting somewhat leave out, your more interactive and take pride not only in your own work but the figure over all when you customize it weather it be simple from changing accessories or swapping heads, or more complex like sculpting and paint apps, but this can help fill the void of a full collection by making it more complete with dream figures hasbro or whoever refuse to make. Hell Jin saotome is a prime example he makes figures better then what you buy in a store and most of it is simple techniques (not to knock his work) and most of it is stuff toy companies should already impliment but are 2 lazy/cheap to do so, like every Iron Man figure should have lights in the eyes, chest and hands and maybe feet, they're gonna give battery companies more buissness, But if you collect and feel like there's nothing more to collect, then either start fresh and jump on a new wave or figure or upgrade the quality of stuff, such as autographs, movie props, statues, busts etc happy collecting
