What do the icons to the left of the threads that look like envelopes mean?

They signal whether you have read and/or participated in a thread. The opened envelope with the letter coming out signifies a thread with new posts. The closed envelope indicates a thread with no new posts and a black dot on it indicates a thread you have posted in.
