Why were the trading cards controversial?

They were really violent for the time, and aimed at young kids. The 1st cards were the dog being killed, and the ripped open guy. At the time, pulp stuff was considered trashy junk media that parents hated.

I remember getting a Destroying a Dog t-shirt in the 90's in Las Vegas somewhere lol. I never got cards or the reprints, but loved the imagery of this, and absolutely loved the Dinosaurs Attack card line from the 80's. I'll probably get the 2 martians.

I'm honestly surprised that they're including an injured dog. I'm more disgusted by the wounded dog than the flayed human lmao

I've been trying to focus the collection recently, and ReActions don't make the cut anymore (I even passed on Hasbro's Mandalorian Retro wave)... but these! I'm keen on all three.

Yeah, me too. The mutilated dog really bugs me, honestly. I don't like it.

Human burned alive = okay.
Dog burned alive = disturbing.

Reminds me of someone I knew who didn't like the Resident Evil movies because of the zombie dog parts.

Anyway, it seems like the proportions of the Martians are off from the cards, which may not have been that consistent, but the martians seems slender with huge heads and often had expressionless eyes, not scowling ones. Somehow that made them creepier than later depictions.

I think I might still have a couple of Martians from Trendmasters' movie line.

Huh - this may sound laughable but I never knew about the trading cards, only the movie. I knew about the gruesome dinosaur cards strangely enough but I didn’t know Mars Attacks originally had these too.

The way I see it - we humans draw this sort of fucked up shit ourselves so it’s on us if we want to portray ourselves getting mutilated. Even though many people are understandably not okay with that either.

But animals are innocent to me. They don’t deserve this, neither real nor fictional. Like, I'm not mad at the image on the card or the figure that is based on it, but it does disgust me more than seeing a human getting blasted to shreds.
