The parts and pieces are in for my Marvel Universe Ares. I'll be taking my first crack at Apoxie (I haven't sculpted since grade school with Play Dough). Any tips, hints, advice? There is so much talent on this website and I really want this to look good.

best tips are be patient, perfection doesn't come instantly, take time, effort and experimentation. If your not sure what the epoxy will be like to sculpt then I suggest using some scrap pieces of toys to test on before you work on you custom to get a feel for it, make sure areas are clean, dry and google jin saotome, check out his site for basics on sculpting, painting etc.

Here's the progress. I'll work on the chest piece and shoulder straps after all these parts dry. He's darn near impossible to handle at this point.

Here's the sportsbra...er, chest piece. I also added the elbow pad and another layer to the wrist piece.

He's finally done! I'm pretty happy with this guy. My first experience with Apoxie Sculpt was pretty darn pleasant.
Comments are always welcome, tips are especially welcome! Last edited by scottmurdock; 09-19-2012 at 11:54 AM.. |

Thanks guys, just trying to do Toyark proud, there is some serious talent here. I couldn't wait any longer for Ares. I like how they rebooted the character and made him a cult favorite. I have a feeling Hasbro will eventually release him but I wouldn't be surprised if he was part of a pricey multipack with repainted / already released characters.

I second that whether this thread was created months ago or not. Id suggest posting these pictures in the Marvel Universe appreciation thread. A few people on this forum are dying for a MU Ares.

Seconding the WHERE did that helmet come from? Good job on the sculpting. One thing I'd suggest, try not to add much in the arm pit area. Makes it so he can't put down his arm anymore. Half the time I end up carving original plastic out of that spot anyways.

HA! I was trolling through this forum and *linsdsay* lohan behold, my Ares. I'm kinda iffy on the legs, I've seen much better. To answer your questions Jim & Matrix, that's a clone wars argyus helmet. I had to shave down the movie wolvie head to get it to fit. THANKS FOR THE KIND COMMENTS! I think we have some great customizers on the 'ark.

you should be proud of that Ares. You did a good job on the sculpting. I wish I had skill in that.

With such a high demand for MU-sized Ares, I wonder if some customizer begins to "mass produce" him. I think that many would buy the figure for $30-40...

Thanks for the kind words guys. I think the best Ares I've seen is by stjuggernaut. There's also one floating on google images that uses a Gladiator head, Absorbing Man torso, Gladiator legs, and some phenomenal sculpting for the armor. I think I'll give this recipe a try when I have some free time.

I think if I mad one I would use a Cable or Cyclops mold. Colossus is just to big.

What did you use to sculpt the chest piece and arms? Just your fingers or a tool? I'm taking a crack for the first time too and practicing on a throw away fig and i can't get the sculpts to look sharp enough.

@cain: Yes, just apoxie sculpt and a $10 basic sculptor's tool set (4 double-sided tools). As everyone here will tell you, just be patient.
