I don't agree that in 30-40 years these things will be worth what the toys of the 60's and 70's are worth today. back then there was no such thing as collectors. No one kept anything in the box toys were meant to be played with so they were. That's why there worth so much in good condition. Starting with the 90's people started holding on to everything MOC. Take the SW POTF line. Big hype and prices out of the gate and now you can't give them away. There making too many MU figs and we are keeping them MOC so they will never be as rare as out parents toys.

I've ran into this a lot as of late. We're pregnant. First kid on the way.
I feel like having a room full of at minimum $1000 in just MU is selfish, even though no one has told me that's the case. So I imagine dumping it all off to "grow up". But at the same time, if my dad turned over a super sweet collection of anything to me now, I'd do some crazy celebration dancing! So it makes me think it's worth holding onto something that was this valuable to me (not monetarily, but just as a passion) in case the kid shares my love for Marvel in any form. And heck, come 4 years old they may just inherit the entire thing to play with as they wish because seeing them happy with toys outweighs my hobby. (minus sdcc and super rare stuff I can't replace easily of course :P But that'd just be until they were older.. because we all know how we played with toys when we were 5! lol) This is something that's been heavily burdening my conscious as of late, but in the end, I still think they sit where they are instead of sell. I won't get nearly as much $ as they bring me (and hopefully my kid(s)) happiness. |

To answer your question, it's definatley a buyers market not so much a sellers. The figures are collectable and desirable, if priced right they will all sell, but if your looking to double or tripple your money it's going to be very hard. Unless you have the rarest of the rare and what comes to mind would be colored Vision, Blade, mail away Nick Fury and Xforce Archangel, and anything released from CC and Mandarin each commanding an easy $50-200+. Other then that it comes down to the wave it self what the assortment ratio, if Wolverine is 1/case he is considered more valuable and sought after, but over time with releases ,repaints and boxsets it takes away from the original single carded figure.
I'd say keep the collection don't sell, it takes years before you know what the true market value is. An item maybe worth $1 but give it 10-20 years and they stop making them and it gets harder to find it then becomes worth $100 or $1000 and to the right person on the right day, sky's the limit. You have a big collection and all moc, if you truely want to make a profit you'd have to sell it as a 1 shot deal with a reserve sticker and something to make the seller drop $5000 such as free shipping. As far as your limited space issue, I hear/feel your pain, I too live in a small 1 bedroom apt, with my gf and tons of shit, and constantly running out of room, I try to sell/get rid of an item if I add an item, especially with clothes. In order to better your situation I have 3 ideas. 1 stop buying toys for a few months and save up enough for a bigger place. 2 rent a storage locker, most places charge you like $1 for your first month, they're clean, heated and you wouldn't need a massive sized room so average rental cost / month should only be newheres from $10-50 max, or if you have friend/family to store it with. 3rd option and the most logical to most of us is, open them! buy yourself a nice display case or couple bookshelfs and open then, the packaging is 90% of the clutter, but by doing so you do drop the overall value.

So, are you having a boy? because if you're having a little girl, she might not be on board with your plan to give her your collection, haha. All kidding aside though, I think it would be pretty cool of you to hand over most of your figures to a little version of yourself, and if you take the time to teach your kid about the characters, they will love them. I have a little sister that is much younger than I am, and she lit up when I gave her a Spiderman doll and some Spiderman socks. We are superheroes to these kids, and they just tend to appreciate anything we do for them. Kudos.
Even if it is a girl, I'll give her a chance to enjoy comics/superheroes/etc., but if the interest isn't there, it isn't there! I'm not pushy. If the toys sit then they sit. I still think the happiness they once brought me (though they still currently do) will outweigh any big cashout that will just go to something we don't need but want all the same. Now if I'm ever hurting for money or the kid needs something, they're gone, just like that. Otherwise, they'll get boxed up before I dump them off. MU has been too big a part of my happiness/collecting life to just dump. But to each their own.. I have loads of moc wwe classics that I now wish I hadn't have gone so crazy over, so if someone feels that way about MU, I understand dropping it all off. |

Kinda... lol I mean don't get me wrong I can't stop buyin toys either, but I try and justify each purchase before I splurge my paycheck on plastic crack.Majority of my collection is loose but safely displayed in my cabinet. And anything not as important get stored away.

I passed on blade a couple of times. Just don't care for that fig. But you're right about the hype. If you want to sell for max profit you have to strike while the irons hot know whats popular and sell to the need to have it now crowd.

Yep, 100% the truth. I never understand why people think that these modern day items that there are tens of thousands in production with so many collectors collecting them that they think that they have gold on their hands in 5-10 or even 20 years. Other than a select few, I dont see any of these rising in value at all over the years.

Sentimental value > monetary.
It's that moment of spotting what you have been wanting in store that makes it worth more than making 20 bucks off something. |

Agreed. I mean, NONE of us are in this for the money, clearly. (I hope.) But yeah Q, it's a great feeling..that new wave, or a new 2 pack or any new retail sighting. And pulling out an old figure from years ago. Like "oh sh*t I forgot I had this!" Great feeling.

Only time I'm in it for the money, is when I'm selling my own figures and its usually to either pay off other bills or reinvest in "better" toys, more oriented to my collection. Like a lot of us, I grew up collecting all kinda of toys from gi joes, batman, transformers, beastwars, spiderman, mcfarlane sports, spawn, ghostbusters, robocop, terminator, marvel, etc I've sold most of my toys I had as a kid and some of it would be worth $$ now, but most if it is easily attainable through ebay. Ebay is a big factor in low value, as it's hard for a comic shop owner to sell an item for double when you can buy it now for retail price online or cheaper.

Just dont do like this bozo I used to know did... He conned his wife into naming their kid Cable. Swear to god- h pitched it like the kid was "a cable linking them together forever" or some shit and she actually bought it. Poor kid, by the time he's in high school, it'll be like having "Atari" for a name. |

Name him Bad Ass Ramsey.
And enroll him in martial arts as soon as possible to avoid the obligatory beatdown such a name would bring to the unprepared). Or name him Hans Olo Ramsey. Or just go with Doug Ramsey (for the New Mutants reference). |

Buyers market, definitely. My suggestion would be to figure out a better system of storage. Maybe turn those tubs into furniture by putting pillows/cushions/sheets over them or something.

If I had a kid, I would call him something cool, but dunno if I'd want a marvel tie-in. Like Blade or juggernaut hahaah. but some cool names that would tie in could be : Peter, Parker, Logan, charles/Xavier, stan, lee, jim, lee, eric for magneto. Although blade, xavier or cerebrol is still a kickass name IMO.

Gweneth Paltro's kid is named Apple. I figure Steve Jobs will file a lawsuit and own the poor little fucker. By comparison, Megatron kicks ass. |

My eldest is four now, but I can still remember having her fall asleep in my arms in the living room after a particularily rough bout of teething. And my wife waking me up a few hours later to put us both in bed. But no matter how much I might complain, having them in my life far outweights anything else and I wouldn't trade it for anything.
