I figured I'd make a thread comparing the old Marvel Showdown figures I own to the Universe figures of the same costumes. There will be a couple where I don't own the universe version, or have bashed mine and don't have more, but I hope most of this will be helpful to people. Oh, and ALL Showdown figures are floppy. The joints that aren't are usually frozen in place, and when forced to move may break.
SD Human Torch, hated this guy on the peg. Only own him because he came in a lot. Very floppy joints, bad paint job. I also dislike the clumpy looking opaque flames. SD Mr Fantastic doesn't have many redeeming factors (double jointed elbows). He is better than the Secret wars Universe fig, but I like the three pack version much more. SD Thing is one of the best SD figs. I like it better than the Universe ones. It has many more joints, arguably better paint and sculpt. He is floppy, but not quite as much as other SD figs. SD Namor isn't too bad. I liked him more than the first Universe version of him, but not as much as this one. I do like his trident. His head is too small. One complaint is that he has superfluous joints, like the rotation on his calves. His feet rotate, and so do his thighs. Does he really need that one? And his forearm rotation joint could have been hidden by his cuffs, but instead it is in the middle of skin. Oh well. Last edited by jimsloth; 03-07-2013 at 10:36 AM.. |

SD Daredevil is another of my favorites. His body proportions are better than almost all of the rest of the line. His gloves and boots are well sculpted, and painted darker red for a nice two tone effect. He was way better than the initial Universe versions, but now with this comic pack version I feel they are close to tied. SD hornhead's flesh paint is one color, and looks a little odd. It could use a dark wash. Also, his hands can't hold anything, which on DD is an issue for me. I like giving my Universe DD extra staffs and nunchucks. SD Cyclops has some odd proportions. His head is not just small, but shallow. Only one advantage now that we have this Universe version. Double jointed elbow means he can actually touch his visor. The Universe Cyclops that has pointing fingers that can't do jack with them bugs the crap out of me. SD Wolverine has some pros and cons. Good sculpted details, good claws, really nice old man looking face. I don't like how tall he is, and he's floppy. The second fig I have him photoed with is my mix of parts (I like that initial universe head sculpt and the type of T bar hip, but like the height of the WO mold). The only way to go for a 90s version of beast. I will be buying Vortious' head cast to replace the screaming version I have, but all in all, one of the best SD figs. SD Colossus is good. Maybe tied in my mind to the Universe multi-pack release. Basically the Uni version has a more realistic(?) look, where the SD version has a more stylized proportion. Not a bad thing, more of a taste thing. The SD's silver paint is more shiny. Unfortunately his fists don't rotate, so it is one of the few times the Universe fig may have it beat for joints. *EDIT* Finally picked up a IM3 Neo Armor to compare this guy to. SD is all kinds of wimpy. Flimsy joints, spindly proportions, short, and every time you raise his arms, the shoulder pad piece gets all out of place. While I'd still like to make some changes to the IM3 version (fix the shoulder pads so they can rotate with the arms, better hips, bigger sculpted moon boots) it beats out the SD version by miles. SD Thor is close to the best, but has a few flaws that really hurt him in my eyes. His calves are super thin, and the circles for his knee joints are too small. This makes it really hard for him to stand. Add to that his cape being heavy and off to one side, and he is constantly falling over on my shelf. That being said, the sculpt is so much better than the Universe version, that he is on my shelf instead of the counterpart here. Oh, and this universe one is a mix of Ragnarok's body with twopack's head. Last edited by jimsloth; 09-30-2012 at 01:47 PM.. |

SD Spiderman, well, I already tore him apart. His carcass is the third one in. First is the superpals three pack version, then Universe single customized with SD's head, lower arms, and feet spliced on. The fourth is Universe comic pack that came with the Sentry. The reason SD spidy got so cut up is that half of his parts were really good. Better than all of the ones released in Universe or the Spiderman line. SD Spidy has a very McFarlane feel, but was also more than a little anorexic. It looks like whoever sculpted that fig hadn't waited for the clay to harden and had squished the belly with their thumb. I don't currently have a Universe black costume Spidy. He got cut up. Since it is the same mold as this one, it will have to do for the time being. SD Black costume spidy is entirely different than the one above. No sculpted webs meant all unique parts. While I like that he is smaller than the Universe mold as I feel Spiderman should be a little smaller than your average super hero, SD Black costume Spidy brings new meaning to frail. The limbs are constantly falling off. He's another figure I got in a mixed lot, and I'm not sure if I'll ever come up with a use for these parts. Maybe some of them for a female fig since they are so thin. SD Dr Doom is another one of my favorites. He has these little rivets sculpted in all over that make the figure really stand out. The universe counterpart used Ultron limbs, and suffers for it. I'm using him as my doombot. The face sculpt is also top notch. I can believe that there is a mangled up human face behind that mask, where as the universe one has a more blank robot look. The only two downsides to this fig in my opinion are 1. he is a little short, and 2. his cape billowing out like that tends to make him fall over. Last edited by jimsloth; 09-30-2012 at 02:39 PM.. |

I don't own the Universe Green Goblin, or the Spiderman line one. This is because I love the SD one that much. The fig standing next to him is Universe hobgoblin's body with the spiderman line hobgoblin's head and cape. Both figures have some great detail carved into the limbs. I dig the SD goblin glider, but it does occasionally fall over. Not as much as I originally expected, and SD Green Goblin does stand firm enough to stay upright most days somehow. SD Doc Oc is really the only version of the classic look in this scale. It is funny that when he was first out, I remember him warming the pegs in KB, and I had no desire to own one. Now that I have him, I can't think of many ways to improve this guy. The octopus limbs could be longer I suppose. His torso doesn't have the rib joint that most of the SD figs have, but I don't think he needs it with his pudgy look. The rest of him is really well jointed, and since his arms and legs are a bit meatier, he has no problem holding a pose. Last edited by jimsloth; 09-30-2012 at 02:57 PM.. |

Few more comparisons added:
SD Ghost Rider looks more like his 90s outfit as opposed to MU which looks more like his first appearance look. I love the SD sculpt. One of the only toys in this scale to have spikes that look sharp, yet are completely soft rubber. It is unfortunate that his wrists don't rotate. There is a seam that makes you think they can. DON'T force it. The seam is actually just the edge of the wrist strap/spikes. The face looks a little squished to me (I like the MU head more) but it is a cool way to illustrate the flaming skull. This is another SD figure where the hips won't stay on and some of the rotation joints are at risk of breaking SD Punisher was great for the time he came out, but now he look lanky. I had to buy two of him to make one with joints intact. That being said, the face sculpt was so good the extra one went to my GIJoe Leatherneck custom. It is a little small on this body, and the pants look like he had a BIG wedgy, but it was still much better than the initial MU Punisher mold. The new mold finally beat it out in my book, but ironically enough it's shoulder joint was frozen at first and almost broke getting it out of the package. I've heard others have had problems with the MU Punisher shoulders as well, so I guess Frank is just doomed to suffer quality control issues. |

This is what you call PWNAGE. LOL. I have the Gray Showdown beast... it is such a beautiful fig that I can't believe it is from the same company that made the rest of the Showdown figs.

Silver Surfer time. Here I'm comparing SHS to the MU version that came with Galactus. First off, this is one of the better SHS figures. Mine has joints that can actually hold a pose, and yet aren't so tight that I've broken him. The paint job while simple, is very good. The board has a stripe of blue faded on it that really makes it look like it came off the page. The same blue is just barely dusted over the highlights of the figure and gives him a really shimmery look. Articulation wise he beats MU on almost every level. His torso is a bit of a downside; even though it has two joints, they don't have much motion in them. I like his board better than the MU one, the pegs hold better, and his ankles turn enough to let him use both pegs at once without falling over. The main/only downside I really see is the proportions are a bit screwy. He doesn't have much of a neck, and his arms are too long compared to the rest of his body. Also his abs are rather flat looking. I do like the face sculpt more than the MU, but it could stand to be a little bigger. |

Hulk here is an odd one. I'm comparing these two because they are closest in size to each other. That being said, both are too small for my liking. I bought SHS Hulk figuring he might be good for customizing. He actually has pretty good movement. The sculpt is what I don't like so much. His pecs have strange ribbing, his legs look bubbly, and he has a very odd look on his face. I don't know, maybe he will turn into a Mr Fixit. |

I think SHS Colossus came with Magneto. Any comparison shots on him?

I'm glad I was able to track down that doc ock. I just prefer him over any of hasbro's offerings. that new one from the infinite series line just looks horrible to me.
also prefer showdown beast over MI beast. wish I could find one for cheap.
