an update on the roboto shoulder issue from toyguru...if ya'll care.
He-Fans, So I did see all the posts on the "Roboto issue" reversed shoulders. Sorry to start an all new thread, but I figure it is easiest to get an answer this way without wandering through tons of posts. I discussed the shoulders today with Bill Benecke our lead designer on MOTUC. It is an interesting case because we never actually received early PR samples for Roboto (unlike most figures, for some reason our product request for samples on this one was never fulfilled by our vendor, this does happen sometimes and is a bit annoying on all fronts). The "sample" we sent to Pixel Dan for a video review was an early package sample I "borrowed" from Bill (Bill I owe you one Roboto!). It was that or nothing, and I know how much you all love the video reviews! This is why no other sites received Roboto samples. We just didn't have them. Arg. The loose samples we have at Mattel both have the correct and incorrect shoulders. Hopefully the vendor did follow our instructions months back to correct the shoulder in the final run. We honestly don't know if the sample sent to Dan was final or not. If the shoulders were incorrect on the full run, of course we'll look into fixing this if we get around to a second release. But for this first release, the production is complete and we won't be able to make changes now. We'll all know more in a few days once product starts shipping. Until then, good journey! They basically said it would only be fixed on a second run of Roboto, if they choose to do it.
And that is what surprised me the most: they aren't even sure if there's even going to be a second run. I would think if they knew that a f*ckup like this happened, they would delay the release date of Roboto, send the defective product back to the plant and make them fix the run. Or at the very least, begin working on a second run with the correct shoulder assembly (maybe using a different plant). I realize it's not entirely Mattel's fault, but all the more reason for them to go after the factory and its piss-poor excuse for communications. This lackadaisical attitude from Mattel is just sad. I mean, it borders on outright apathy.

AGREED. and it's a pretty freakin thin border at that.
the thing that i have so much difficulty believing is that the vendor NEVER sent them a PR sample. WTF? really guys? so i guess you just said,"k tanks looks finez meik toiz" WITHOUT seeing a final production sample??? unbelievable. |

You charge HOW much for these, make them HOW hard to acquire, and you expect a simple WHOOPS to make up for it?
Stay classy. Matty... |

I have yet to buy a MOTUC figure(plan to eventually), but wow this is possibly the worst news I have heard for the line. Bad screw up on this one.

You aint' kiddin. The only MOTUC figures I have are the 2-Packs from TRU and Hordak. I can't believe an error of this magnitude slipped by, ESPECIALLY for the premium they charge their customers. I can tell you, with almost 100% certainty, that the reason that they are letting it go down like this is because if they were to order another production run to fix the error they would make absolutely no profit from this figure. Quite possibly, they would end up losing a little. Their excuse is that the figure still functions correctly. This is probably true, but just the principle of the fact that they let something like this slip by is incredible. Mattel wants to say "Oh, we catch things like this all the time and we never talk about it." Well, you're supposed to catch errors before a product goes into production. It's called quality control. Somebody might be getting fired over this.

Damn. I'm sure glad I forgot to order one. I know it still "functions properly", but that's not the point. The point is, the damn toy was put together wrong. And every single figure suffers from it. This not something you expect from a company like Mattel. This is something you expect from a two-bit operation, running out of a garage. It's not just wrongly assembled figures, it's the way they handled it too. The correct response to this, would be to start another production run on these as soon as possible...and this time get it right.

So it's the vendor's fault, not the factory? Well, whoever was responsible for the tooling, I guess.
Regardless, it's still up to Matty to fix the issue by doing another run with a correct mold. But at least now I see why it could take some time to do that, since the actual "master" mold containing the shoulder pieces will have to be redone. Depending on how the plates were done (and how many parts-per-plate there are), that could be the same as starting from scratch. At the very least, I hope Mattel seeks out a new vendor in the future.

"The Original" bursts are for re-issues, and this is Roboto's 1st release.
