Man, the way they sculpted that elbow with the pad hanging off when you bend the joint looks "El Terible"...

what is it about Chris Evans that no one seems to be able to capture his likeness?

Completely non-descript white boy face. Other than a strong-ish jaw line, there's really nothing that stands out about his features to exaggerate in small scale. Infinity War's look should help if companies can get the shape of his beard correct.

He's got a distinct enough face to see this isn't very good at all. Do they have his rights?

Then you have stuff like this that is initially sculpted in studio, and then reinterpreted by the factory sculptors. NECA doesn't use scanning tech for their initial sculpts or their final factory sculpts. Stuff gets lost in translation at times. It's not a good likeness of Chris Evans, but I can see why they (and others) didn't capture it well.

It’s weird, like Evans face is an optical illusion. If you just focus on any one part and complain it to a photo, it looks perfect, but when you take the whole thing in its off, and that goes for every figure of him I’ve ever seen. Maybe they should try giving him a facial expression? The blank face is always harder to replicate. I think on this one the nostrils look too large in relation to the nose on the masked head.

I get there's reasons why it's hard, but it still doesn't mean that this is impossible. They can get it pretty good/great on 1/6 scale, I know NECA isn't gonna paint like Hot Toys does, but the sculpt isn't even close to Chris Evans. The 1/12 Civil War SH Figuarts looks better. Civil War came out 2 years ago anyway, they might as well have taken even more time to get the head right.

Did they forget what Chris Evans looks like and just guessed what he looked like?

I could care less if it looks like Chris Evans. I don't want a Chris Evans sitting on my shelf. I would like a Captain America. So I am ok with it not looking like Evand and being just Captain America. What I can't really handle is a cross eyed Captain America.
I kinda feel like they got away with that on the TMNT because well, it works but they need to figure that cross eyed thing out. Last edited by Bearjew; 03-07-2018 at 04:56 PM.. |

I've always wanted a figure of some guy cosplaying as the MCU Captain America!

I think the figure looks great generally. NECA did a fantastic job with the 1/4 scale light-up Jungle Hunt Predator. I wouldn't mind adding a couple more well-done 1/4 scale figures to the top of my bookcase. But those elbow joints look butt ugly and would be a nagging annoyance. Next.

Every face is distinct in real life. But when you try to break down a very clean, symmetrical, "typically handsome" face with little defining features into a traditional sculpt, it is more difficult to capture the likeness than a character with more defining features. Someone like Schwarzenegger, Robert Patrick, and Robert Downey Jr. have more defining facial features that can be accentuated in a smaller sculpt and pass as a better likeness.
Then you have stuff like this that is initially sculpted in studio, and then reinterpreted by the factory sculptors. NECA doesn't use scanning tech for their initial sculpts or their final factory sculpts. Stuff gets lost in translation at times. Hasbro utilizes a 3D sculptor for their Black Series figures, not scanning. And the new Death Star Trooper looks better because they're now utilizing the digital printing technique to apply the paint apps. The underlying head sculpt is pretty much the same as the original release.

The heads were sculpted by Trevor Grove and they looked awesome when he posted them on his Facebook page (trevor.grove.9) in their raw state. What on earth have Neca done to them? Paint slap, maybe?
