Wow, that's a really obscure thing to base a figure on. But screw it, it's nonetheless awesome.

It is a quite cool looking mask, maybe Randy had this skin in the game so he chose it for the first figure. I'd like a Dark (with alternate ancient lord mask), Hunter (Celtic's mask on this body), and to see some of the aliens (mainly the predalien).

I know Randy had stated that they would eventually be revisiting the Alien vs. Predator: Requiem movie and re-doing the Wolf Predator, so it's probably a given that a Predalien will come out of that line as well.

Yeah but I really don't like that predalien design, it was stupidly top-heavy and way too predator with its features. The abomination from AVP-2010 is at least consistent with its proportions and the body looks biomechanical like an alien should.

I've only gotten a few glimpses of it so far during the Predator campaign (obviously I'm going to have to fight it at some point), but yeah, it totally looks better.

I'm fine either way.. I just want a modern version of it with good articulation.

So if the Predators use their bio masks in part to assist with breathing in atmospheres different from their home world... then why is this dude missing the mouth piece of his mask?

Nothing ever officially indicates whether or not the masks are necessary to their survival. If the masks do help then we also know they can go without them for some time and this guy was really close to his ship. The mouth piece used in Predator 2 could just as likely be medicinal given his injuries, like it's some kind of morphine mask.

It also featured a modified version allowing a human to breath in a natural Yautja environment, which would normally burn the lungs of and kill any human. Though this conflicts with Predator 2, where a human walked around unaided in a Yautja ship without being harmed at all.

The Alien/Predator (Xenopedia) wiki's page for the Bio-Mask says this:
The Alien Species wiki (just a wiki for any fictional alien species) page for Predators mentions that many "Expanded Universe" Predator works, like comics, books, etc. state that they need the mask, but give wildly different, contradicting reasons why, and different explanations of how well they survive in Earth-like atmospheres, ranging from "Can, with some difficulty", to "Can, but only for a week", to "Only for a very short while". It's safe to say that the only thing that indicates in the movies (which are the only things that seem to be indisputably canon with this universe) that Predators maybe have trouble breathing in human atmospheres, as far as I can tell, is the City Hunter breathing from the hand-held mask in Predator 2. And even then, as you suggested, there could be other reasons for his use of that hand-held mask.

So, I think it's pretty clear that the Bio-Masks are intended to be all-around life-support gear with audio/visual enhancement, scanners, video recorders...pretty much whatever any given film's writer needs 'em to be, really. The one inconsistency I'm surprised doesn't get mentioned more is the goof regarding the Jungle Hunter and City Hunter's heat vision, sans Bio-Mask. In Predator 1, JH's vision goes all red when he removes his mask, but in Predator 2 CH's vision remains exactly the same as when he had the mask on and doesn't . Hmmh. I think Predator 1 & 2 make it pretty clear that the Predators wear the bio-masks to help them breathe better in various atmospheres. There are visual cues that strongly support this:

The key word I used in my first post was "necessary." While I generally buy that humans and yautja normally exist in different atmosphere types there's no evidence that one is actually lethal to the opposite species. Predators (the movie) depicts a predator left in the open for hours without a mask on while the humans give no complaints regarding the air so in that scenario it's evident that the two can generally coexist for extended periods without the predator biomasks.

Oh, I think that's made pretty clear in the movies as well. It seems that whatever the Predators breathe is similar to what humans breathe...similar enough that they can get by without their Bio-Masks if need be, but different enough that that they still need a little "boost" here and there when mask-less. Earth air certainly doesn't appear lethal at all to Predators, at any rate.
Re: City Hunter's vision; maybe, and this is a big maybe, his eyes still see in infrared without the mask because of implants. City Hunter is definitely way more into tech than Jungle Hunter was so it's possible that he has implants enabling him to see in that field of vision regardless of his mask.

I agree with you on that one as well !! all the films they take their masks off, and are perfectly fine to breath in regular oxygen like humans do, however yes their masks always do have some sort of a tube, however the only other thing i could think is that the masks they are could possibly be air tight and they need oxygen to breath but of course. |

I guess it's part of the mystery of the predators that is left to our imagination or future movies.

Naaaah, that isn't a true Youngblood Predator... he needs to have a garish colorful spandex outfit, with a million pouches everywhere, colored mohawk hair, and some really extrawagant and impractical weapon. Oh and his name should be like, "Crushorrr" or something, because poor literacy is KEWL!
Where is Rob Liefeld when you need him? (those who don't get it... I was referring to this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Youngblood_(comics)) |
