All that's left are the Greys...
Comparing the original AoA Sunfire to the new, while I prefer the new one overall, aesthetically, the original has enough charm and uniqueness that I fully intend on keeping him. Maybe I'll just display one with 616 Poccy to represent his time as a Horseman.

Even though three of the stores in the area list as in stock, they still shipped mine from TX

Since Hasbro failed to give us a new headsculpt to allow us to create "Ultimate" Venom for the Monster Venom re-release, I finally (and painfully) offered up my Select as the sacrificial lamb. Thankfully, I didn't need to do any dremeling...a nice soak in boiling water did the trick. I might do a little bit of touch up with some paints as the paint on this much older figure has faded a bit, but I love how it came out.
Which brings me to my next question...as Hasbro continues to fill out our collections with remakes that are supplanting our older versions, how do you feel about turning older figures into fodder parts? Accessories aside are one thing, as they can easily be swapped back and forth between figures...I'm talking more about more permanent changes that often cannot be reversed,, such as removing headsculpts and body parts? It's something that I struggle with personally, as I tend to not dump off the older figures in my collection. Purposely breaking them or chopping them up, even if they are to make improvements to another figure, feels destructive and wasteful to me at times. There's something about keeping those original figures in their original state that appeals to me...as if I'm preserving history somehow. Even in the case of the Select Ultimate Venom figure (great sculpt, but terrible figure) I felt a great deal of guilt just popping the head off this sucker, even though I was happy with the result. Just wondering how some of you felt about it? Last edited by Trivial Psychic; 05-24-2020 at 07:44 PM.. |

i gor no sentimental attraction to any toy outside very vintage stuff from my childhood- modern items (anything 90's forward) is fodder at best, garbage at worst. My Select Venom willingly donated his heads and hands to better my Mac Gargan Venom and ShadowKing. I've found the older i get the less i care about the "collection" vs just something cool for the shelf. I think my 30's was the worst era of collecting and cataloging and being concerned about condition and storage and all that stuff that ties a collector down. lolz...

Once I got my Legends Gambit I threw away my Select Gamibt and gave all his accessories to my Legends Gambit. I actually got rid of Select Gambit to make sure I didn't waste any more money on Select figures though as I was really tempted to buy Select Psylocke just because. I'm so glad I didn't buy Select Colossus and just waited a few years for the Legends version to come out.

Found the AoA wave at Walmart, they had everybody except for Dark Beast and Jean but that's okay because Sunfire was the only one I really wanted. Pretty much every AoA redesign is very '90s "XTREEM!!" in nature but I've always liked the more elemental take on Shiro, and clearly Marvel did too since they made him look like this in the main universe for a stretch. I like the classic Sunfire costume because it looks sort of like a red lionfish which made him seem like an Ultraman type character but the AoA look tops it in my book for better embodying his name and power. The only part that's really a costume since he went off like a nuke is his mask which is basically a kabuki mask of the Japanese flag, it's lacking in subtlety but hey Shiro's a true patriot (and practically a nudist). Looking strictly at the figure it's a cool translucent-yellow fire man that catches light in cool ways. Really my only gripe is that he has nothing in the accessories department.

And this is where my original point is made. I have absolutely no reason to ever even think of searching for those words together
