Yamato announced that their next project for Macross is the 1/60 VF-19 Kai Fire Valkyrie! Now this is no mere repaint with minimal retooling of their 1/60 YF-19, not at all, as the design requires a predominantly new mold. It's reminiscent of the differences between the YF-22 prototype and production F-22A Raptor; the latter looking significantly different by production time.

The VF-19 in Macross 7 was shown in 3 different varieties:
  • Fire Valkyrie
  • VF-19S Blazer Valkyrie
  • VF-19F
  • VF-19P from Macross Dynamite 7
Flown by protagonist Nekki Basara, the VF-19 Kai Fire Valkyrie differed from previous "hero" valkyries by sporting a face, and was armed with minimal conventional weaponry. Instead, the pacifist Basara preferred to use his speaker pod shells and fire them at enemy and ally alike, in order for them to stop fighting and "listen to his song"!

Being that this is an all new mold, don't be surprised to see the Blazer Valkyrie from Emerald Force follow not too long afterwards. The 1/60 Fire Valkyrie will be the 1st modernized, perfect variable toy of the VF-19 Kai to hit the market, as the last one made was Bandai's original DX 1/65 VF-19 Kai Fire Valkyrie from the mid 90's(and their later VF HI-METAL version doesn't count since it does require parts removal/swapping)!

i'm just really excited to see the new mold (and it SHOULD be a new mold. i dont think they could ret con the yf-19 effectively). the vf-19 is a great lookin fighter...not too crazy about basara or mac 7, but man the valk is slick...

They can't get by using most of the 1/60 YF-19 mold, though similar and though the YF-19 is the prototype for the VF-19 continuity wise, the production VF-19 is much different than the YF-19 prototype. The only thing they share is the overall silhouette; everything else except maybe the canards and cockpit are different.

This works in our favor because Yamato's 1/60 YF-19 is already starting to show it's age, especially when compared to the 1/60 YF-21 and VF-11B.

yeah i was noticing this weekend that it's lookin' a little chunky in spots compared to the execution on the 11b. thicker landing gear, bigger panel section breaks...however i still love it. it is my fave valk design. other than the non-locking cockpit in battroid mode mine has none of the problems that other owners seem to have on theirs. i would even pony up the cash for a 2.0 version.

A 2.0 with whatever quality control improvements they implement on the Fire Valkyrie would be awesome. Ideally, what I'd want is something close to lineart in battroid mode with a sleek fighter mode like the Hasegawa 1/72 kit. It is a difficult achievement, but Yamato tends to outdo themselves quite often. The jump in quality/design/engineering from the V1 1/60 VF-1 to the 1/48 VF-1 not even that many years later was astounding.

i actually prefer the sleeker/skinnier design of yamato's battroid to the lineart...it's all preference/opinion anyway. you are correct about the design and engineering. the yf-19 was released in dec 06. look at the incredible headway they have made since then. i think it'll only get better from here
