mattel Ask Matty Dec 16 Answers for Toyark.com
Toyark.com: With the announcement of new levels of articulation for the DC Infinite Heroes line in 2010, will you be revisiting characters that have been previously released in the line?
Mattel: Yup! That is the long term plan!

Toyark.com: DC recently acquired the rights to the classic T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents characters. Can we expect to see toys of these in the near future?
Mattel: No. The T.H.U.N.D.A.R. agents are not part of our master agreement with DC.

Toyark.com: Mattel has announced MOTUC Battle Cat and Ghostbusters Walter Peck with containment unit through Mattycollector.com. Can we expect more vehicles/playsets in the future for Mattel toy lines?
Mattel: We'll be watching Battlecat closely to see how sales go to review future large scale beasts. There are no current plans for playsets, but we are looking at including other larger accessories such as the containment unit with Walter!

Toyark.com: Joker from the Walmart exclusive wave 10 of DCUC is notoriously hard to find, especially during the holidays. We've heard that Power Girl will be re-released in a later, non-exclusive wave. Will the same hold true for Joker, possibly with different paint apps or accessories? Fans have been waiting for a fully articulated 6" Joker ever since the DC Superheroes line started years ago.
Mattel: As an A-List villain, it is almost certain Joker will be re-released in time. Just how has not been revealed yet.

Toyark.com: Will Mattel have something similar to the Build N Brawl line for WWE figures?
Mattel: We will have an exciting new feature for kids called Flex Force which lets WWE characters pull off their signature moves in or out of the ring!

If you have a question you would like to ask Mattel, you can submit them in this thread.

Sounds like DCIH will be completely revamped for next year, which is good because the competition's figures are superior.

MOTUC Q&A's from Around the 'Net: December 1st

Quote:
The Fwoosh

2. You recently posted on your Face Book page that you have gotten early samples in for the MOTUC Mossman figure. While you said the flocking was not quite the right color, what about the application itself? Did the partial flocking work out well so he is still “mossy” but his articulation is not inhibited?

Yes, he still has Moss covering 80-90% of his body. The areas we could not flock include the shoulders, knees and elbow joints.

4. I think it is safe to say that the reaction to Adora’s skirt/bodysuit piece (the portion below the belt, covering the hips) has been mixed. Many fans feel it is too fat and clunky, as you looking at ways to make it look more streamlined and feminine for future figures like Glimmer?

We went right to the Four Horsemen for this one:

“We will definitely try and push things in that direction. The biggest issue at this point is that if the bodysuit is cut too much higher, the unsightly (yet functional) articulation will show through. When we designed the female base figure we had to make something that would work on as many characters as possible. The design as is may fit some characters a little better than others. In the future if there is room for additional tooling things may change, but until then we will try and address this issue as best we can.”

4) Which MOTU/POP and DC Comics character, which has not yet appeared, is especially popular in your company? Whom would you like to see as a figure?

Buzz Off, Man-E-Face and Spikor are pretty popular around here. In the POP world, Frosta, Catra and the Star Sisters would be great. For DCU, Legion of Superheroes, WWII characters and Kamandi are personal favorites of Toy Guru!At the end of the day, tooling availability, spreading out A list characters and licensor approvals all come into play with character selection. Just because our design team likes a figure, does not guarantee it makes it into the line. We also look A LOT at fan requests online for inspiration!

BZZURKK – We don’t currently have a Masters of the Universe comic to wet are comic reading appetites. Why not have a short (5-10) page comic with each figure?

Mattel - Oh, I hear you on fan demand for this. Unfortunately comics are just not something in the cards right now.

That New Toy Smell

1) Any idea if there is going to be a completely new sculpt for the release of MOTUC Prince Adam (different build and features) like the 200x series, or will it be a modified MOTUC He-Man base model?

In time we are looking to do both.

2) On facebook you said that you had a packaged Battlecat but the package was damaged, when will we see him in his package?

Once we get a correct package in!

3) With the success of the MOTU Art book, will there be another one at any stage?

Not as this time. This was a one time offer.

4) Any possibility of a 3 3/4" set of MOTU figures and playsets at some point?

Very cool suggestion but nothing is planned right now.

5) We understand we probably won't get any castles unless a movie comes out, but is there any chance of vehicles like the Battle Ram, Attack Track, or Wind Raider?

We’ll have to see how Battle Cat performs before committing to anything larger or more tooling intensive like a vehicle. Vehicles are also tough since they can only be used once vs. Battle Cat which can also be reissued as Panthor and Clawdeen.

2. Mr. Rant asks: I’m content with the Wonder Twins Eagle standing in for Zoar and Screech, but is there any chance of the birds getting their harnesses anytime soon?

Yes, we do have plans for the perch and harness for the MOTU birds in all the needed colors! Stay tuned.

3. Manekochan asks: Thanks for the Plastic Man answers. I think he’s the announced figure I’m most excited about (unannounced is Ambush Bug! You gotta make him!). What unreleased figure, across any of the lines you cover, are you most looking forward to seeing hit the toy aisles?

BattleCat from MOTU Classics is a huge favorite around here as are finishing the rest of the Ghostbuster crew. In the DC world, our Retro Action vintage cloth figures (starting with Green Arrow, available Dec 15th only on Mattycollector.com) is going to be great!

Q1: After the re-releases of He-Man and Skeletor, which other figures will be getting re-released? Will we get another chance to pick up Man-at-Arms and Beast Man from Matty or is the only way to get these off of the secondary market?

A1: Yes, we do plan to get to more re-releases in time. Not every figure will be re-released, but the main A list characters like He-Man and Skeletor will.

1) Now that Evil Lyn has been confirmed as the Club Eternia April figure, will she include tons of packed in accessories like Teela and will she have interchangeable heads as well?

Quote:That remains to be announced!

2) Aside from the Evil Lyn announcement, will Matty be revealing any other Club Eternia 2010 figure before Toy Fair?

Quote:Likely yes, but we can’t confirm quite yet.

3) Is there any chance that next year’s MOTUC release schedule may include a Snakeman or two?

Quote:We need to wait to see how the bonus figures do before announcing any more 2010 figures, but we are eager to get to the Snake Men!

4) The MOTUC King Randor figure looks great but it has absolutely no 200X influence in it’s design. Is there a possibility we may get a 200X-styled Randor in the near future?

Quote:Yes, we could get to a 200X version of Randor in time (in the classics style mind you).

5) Will the Bonus Wun-Dar figure come in the traditional blister card package as the rest of the line and will the Eternia map be inserted in the toy package as well?

Quote:Wun-Dar will come on a traditional card with bio and cross sell to fit perfectly in your mint on card collection. The poster will be packed out separately but shipped together.

1.) Tom-Tom asks: How expensive would it be in the short run to switch to an alternative-source plastic like Thermoplastic starch biodegradable plastics? That way, there’d be lower production costs and lower MSRPs in the long run.

A cool suggestion but not something logistically we can switch to.

2.) Mark asks: Why are you giving your new WWE figures great cloth capes and coats, etc., but continuing with plastic capes on MOTUC and DCUC?

This is an aesthetic choice made by each brand.

3.) Dayraven asks: With the majority of MOTUC figures so far requiring only minor new tooling with each new figure, what will happen when the line exhausts these characters and all that’s left to produce are characters that will need completely unique tooling (like Ram-Man or Two-Bad)?

We have a long term plan in place to spread the fully tool’d figures out mixed with low tool figures each year. This helps make the line economical for Mattel while still getting all the characters out for fans. In 2009, Teela was a fully tool’d figure after all!

Great alternative if you don't want the 5 pack version at Walmart. Awesome to see Green Arrow listed there too!

Excited about the bigger figures from DCSH who might be revisited as C&C figures. I'm guessing this possibly means a bigger Mongol, bigger Doomsday(a lot of fans complained about his size), and possibly a bigger Bane. I WANT THEM ALL!

As for DCIH and new articulation, I take it this referred to the Martian Manhunter wave. Eh, they're alright, basically the same upgraded articulation from the Public Enemies sets.

Meh the DCIH Ravager@ Toy Fair doesn't count for new articulation.

so my question with answer was:

Toyark.com: The new three packs with Cyborg, Plastic Man, Captains Boomerang and Cold and Metallo are out but do not seem to be in wide release. Were these produced in lower numbers? They are currently on ebay for $100 or more. Should we expect to go to the secondary market for these or should we soon be seeing an increase of them like with the Super Friends pack?
Mattel: Without a doubt.

So is with it without a doubt that I must pay ebay? or without a doubt there will be more?

with mattel these days it could really be eithier

Yeah I prefer the older style answers.

Considering how Mattel has pissed off so many customers/collectors, I'm surprised they thought that being "cute" with the Magic 8 ball routine was a good idea. It comes off as smugg and jerky, which makes me think that all of their "forgive us for issues/we're working on it" line is really disingenuous.

To be clear--it goes beyond being coy or evasive to build excitement for a product. Like when they answered the second to last question with "Without a Doubt"--it was an "either/or" question about whether we should be looking at ebay or waiting for another release, and no clear answer was made.

I agree. It's so much better to see things on the shelf before making a final decision, and not being forced into buying because you're afraid they will sell out in ten minutes. Plus, I could buy more if I wasn't spending so much on shipping! Hopefully we'll see them back at retail someday.

Yeah, #4 was annoying, but not totally unexpected. Mattel has such tunnel vision, sometimes. And #5 was a non-answer, if I ever heard one. We asked what you would change/add, not if you would.

Well since Mattel is doing a 3.75 inch Green Lantern line it would be logical that a Batman movie line would also have that scale.
There already was a 1/18th Ghostbusters ambulance. I sure wouldn't mind a 3.75 inch Ghostbuster line! So how can there be fan support if there is no line?

Agreed. Matty has seen what Hasbro's done with MU, XMO:W and IM2 now and will probably follow suit (unless the GL line is like DCIH and/or tanks).

It's that old Catch-22: "We can't make a line if there's no support!" vs. "We can't support a line if there's no product for us to buy!"

I guess we'll see how Matty does with the GL line. If it's a hit, maybe then they will seriously consider expanding other lines into the 1:18th scale.

Publicly show there is demand, via polls and/or threads voicing support/demand for such a line.
ludovicotek:
If the Ghostbusters 3 movie actually happens, due no less to a minor miracle from God him/herself, then maybe a full 3 3/4" line could happen along with it. It seems like that would be one of the only scenarios where Mattel would invest in something like that. Do kids today really even know about Ghostbusters? I'm not talking about the few who have cool parents that raise them on the good stuff. I mean the vast majority of kids.

They may only becoming aware of the cartoon due to dvd now, but the original two movies, I think they are. Ghostbusters is one of those fairly timeless classics from the eighties, like Indianna Jones, and Back to the Future, and Aliens. The movies are fairly accessible, with or without cool parents.
(Though, younger kids kids may not have seen it due to the potentially scary nature)

Now, whether or not theese kids are judgemental against it is a different story.
But Hell, I don't know, really. One year for halloween my dad and I dressed as Groucho and Harpo Marx, and I couldn't find a damn person under 30 who knew who we were.

In DCUC (and related lines like GL Classics), the plastic bubbles combined with the poses the figures are displayed with, in package, has a nasty habit of warping the figures limbs, especially the legs. In some cases to the point where the figure cannot stand, or is horribly deformed.
Is mattel aware of this problem, and if so, have they considered ways to potentially solve this?
Tarquinius:
I really hope that big news at SDCC is a MOTU 3.75 inch line...

Well, that's just great. Apparently the GL 3.75" line will be just like the Spider-Man line in the same scale, and have LESS articulation than DCIH. You're moving backwards, Mattel!

Don't get me wrong, gimmicks can be great and GL is a good property for them. But a gimmick should never be detrimental to a figure. Otherwise, the whole thing is crap. I guess I'll have to stick with the 6" line or just pass on the line altogether.

I might grab one or two of the 3.75'' just for the accessories to go with my DCIH ones I already have. Otherwise I agree entirely. This sucks, and I don't collect anything above 4'' anymore unless it's a character who is fitting as bigger, or is just such a clear fan fave it overrides my scale favortism.

That being said, I'll definitely be all over a 6'' parallax if they make it. The yellow demon one I mean. Not Hal or Kyle.

From what I've gathered from the Q&A and the recent article in Toy Fair, the emphasis on the small figures isn't on the figures but the gimmicks they come with. Transforming constructs IIRC.

Now the jet which they are pushing, MIGHT be cool, but I have to see it 1st. It's a tank that turns into a jet. If it turns into an F-35 with retractable landing gear, maybe I'll bite, but I'm skeptical.

The 6" Movie Masters are catered towards us but to me, they look like they were sculpted in-house and not by the 4H. Understandable since the 4H may have their hands full with DCUC, Ghost Busters, MOTUC, and their own works. The GL MM look decidedly different, like they come off more as up-scaled, improved DCIH figures.
Specter:
man I wish there was a way hasbro could get the rights to just make DC 3 3/4 stuff. I wont buy anymore of the mattel crap I have Microman Batman,Batgirl,Catwoman, Ra's thats good enough for me. Mattel hooked me with a wide selection of so-so figures then they made better ones and it was great then when they get to the best characters they cancelled them(GA Batman,Batgirl,Harley,Ivy,Hawkgirl) then tell fans to wait an entire year for the GL line then we finally get pics they are even worse than the original DCIH(how is that even possible)

4 ¼-inch scale two-packs? How did I miss this at Toy Fair? If the Young Justice adults are scaled to 4 1/4" (as opposed to the sidekicks) then that's the same scale as the latest MU and GI Joe toys.

Uhh no MU is 4 inch. That's 1/4 inch too tall. Aren't JLU 5 inch? So then it makes sense that the kids are shorter than the adults. Plus JLU has worse articulation than DCIH had. Mattel seems to be averse to decent articulation on their smaller figures.

4) Does the Voltron Force license enable you to make transforming/combining toys/figures of Dairugger XV(the Voltron made of multiple vehicles)?
A) Yes, our license covers this type of execution.

Although why you'd WANT them to reissue THAT one is another story...

I HAD one of those... you'll learn.
iaof:
The Voltron Answer has me worried. Design "in house".

Yes, because everything Matty does "in house" has been free of Q/A issues oh and assembly problems. /sarcasm Not like the 4H don't know what they are doing every time of day either. "Overworked?" Riiiight.
Autobot_Goldbug:
Yep keep those blinders on Matty for your crappy 3 3/4 inch figures.

2) Why was the decision made to implement bicep swivels on some Green Lantern Movie Masters that already have ball jointed elbows? For example: Hal Jordan.

cortez42:
So, why bother having Q&A sessions if you're not going to A any Q's? All you can comment is on the SDCC exclusives which everyone has already seen?
