hold up! I just figured out an amicable solution, upon review of ROTJ I've determined a few things that are relevant to this conversation
1: you never see Leah "forced" to wear the bikini, for all we know she was wearing that under her disguise. or she may have been offered a wardrobe to chose her clothes from in the palace, we don't know for sure. 2: in no way can Leah be interpreted as a "slave" she's at best a prisoner, did you see her do any work? if the term "slave" is an issue I think it's not applicable here. 3. it's hot in Jabba's palace, everyone is sweaty as hell, so it stands to reason you don't want to be dressed in the heavy Boush outfit, the tasteful bikini is the way to go. Jabba was helping her out by not giving her heat stroke. 4. given Jabba's reputation he was most likely going to sell her back to the rebels for ransom. he is a business man, slug, thing... so she'd be classified as a political prisoner, if her hair and makeup are any indication she was being well taken care of. 5. as far as the chain goes, where do you keep you prisoners? you can't let this rebel girl, who's dating a guy that screwed you over in a business deal, wander your home!?! hell first chance she got she killed Jabba! she was clearly dangerous. |

Learn how to space your thoughts and maybe I'll pay attention to your drivel.
And maybe kids are fucking pussies now. What are you guys going to do about it? Pummel them like a bunch of frat boys? C'mon guys let's go bash some nerds! Money says this guy is a cop in real life. Seriously though, living in a free country means I can say whatever I want or ruffle as many feathers as I can. If you spent time in Afghanistan as a soldier, you have my respect on that front, but it by no means invalidates unrest. It also means I have to listen to your Rambo fueled "patriotism". And none of you people's personal experiences mean that everyone is like you, or that there weren't people back in the 70s and 80s that didn't have these thoughts too. It's not like millennials were the first generation to promote these ideals, they're just the first where people couldn't just stick their head in the sand and pretend people with different beliefs than them were insane. For the record, I'm not a cop, as far as your frat boy nerd beating comment, I'm a 32 year old man, who collects toys... c'mon dumb ass wake up I am the nerd. I do agree with you that you wonderful Mellinnials do not have any original ideas, just regurgitating the same communist bull shit, taught to you by some useless professor that convinced your tiny brain that he's a genius, mixed with a need to hyper sexualize society everything simultaneously bitching and crying because some damn movie that came out before you were born may not live up to your "high moral standards". go forth perpetual victim! fill the world with your profound thoughts! go... go now! |

The irony of someone berating people for whining about action figures while being a 32-year old.....whining....about action figures. An action figure of an outfit that already has 50 billion action figures at that.

be careful, that sort of "hate speech" ain't looked too kindly on in these parts! how un PC. Somewhere Hillary is sheading a tear. seriously, I'd never HATE you over this, or any political disagreement. THAT's the point! stop taking peoples views so personally. you think my views are stupid, I think the same of yours. but I'll bet once you get past the bull shit we'd probably get along better than you think.

Because if I keep quiet, years from now when someone stumbles on this thread they'd think everyone in 2015 was overly sensitive and stupid. it's not about that representation of the character, it's about banning shit! imagine your favorite movie, book, or character was banned from production because I didn't like it's non existent underlying message as per my interpretation. you'd probably be pissed. just saying.

Yeah, absolutely nothing to do with the sexist fuckboys that put down anything women have to say that isn't "I'm totally not like other women! I'm CONVENIENT for male geeks!" Quote:
I understand perfectly what all the words I use mean.
Quote:
'Machismo grandstanding'? Is this going to be a case of 'My bigotry is ok but yours is problematic?' methinks it is...
Are you seriously suggesting having a problem with sexist assholes in an overly male-dominated hobby is somehow oppressive? Quote:
And I know exactly what 'toxic masculinity' means. Just because feminists have decided it exists doesn't mean it does.
Quote:
It's a theory - not a fact. Individuals can be toxic, but masculinity - just like femininity - is not inherently toxic. Go back to your gender studies course and come back when you've spent a few years away from the echo chamber.
You could argue there are forms of toxic femininity, too, but that's a whole other thing to get into. Toxic masculinity is what starts wars and breeds violence, so generally, it's the bigger issue here. Quote:
Said every SJW ever about every place that people were allowed to disagree with them with impunity.
Do you have any idea what it's like being a geek girl, a minority, queer or trans in a cis het white guy fedorafest? Good chance you don't. Most people using your argument certainly don't. What people like you do isn't "disagremeent". You're unable to deal with this subject without putting on a deeply condescending and nasty tone to anyone that disagrees with you. Do you think I had a problem if this was a mature discussion where you accepted people's points and gave them intelligent rebuttals? No. I have a problem with assholes like you like who double down on groups that have only recently gotten a foothold in your little boys club. You pretend like your "SJW" bogeymen are the fascists when really it's you, being a status quo champion. Very often it's not really a thing you can rationally disagree on, which is why you're so quick to sink to that. It's based on you denying and rejecting other people's experiences. Quote:
What constitutes a safe space to an SJW is somewhere they get to state their opinions as facts, and people are banned from disagreeing.
Quote:
The fact is, there has been disagreement and discussion on this thread, and yet you still say it is a place where a 'lot of people are afraid to speak out' (a lot?) and it shows just how blinkered you're being.
Quote:
SJW's bully the exact same way. The difference is one group says everyone should be able to speak, and the other says nobody who disagrees with them should be able to speak... or it's 'bullying'.
You're acting like you're being bullied into silence, but I remember boards like this 5-6 years ago. And you were doing exactly that. And not because what people were saying was oppressive or hurtful, but because, like now, you didn't like being challenged. You only like "freedom of discussion" when it's on your terms and you know you have support. You're not some sort of freedom fighter. You probably don't know what it's like to take a serious stance for your rights. Again, you're an asshole. You're shitting on women and minority groups. That's all you're doing. You're dressing it up in fancier language, but again, you're shitting on people who are actually persecuted and then playing the victim. You're pathetic. Quote:
Arguments are being addressed. If all you want is agreement then you aren't asking for people to 'deal with arguments'.
If you want a real argument, then leave bullshit slurs like "Social justice warrior" at the door. Again, they only exist to shame people into silence, or to get a rise out of people. You don't use terminology like that if you're looking for a real discussion. Terminology like toxic masculinity etc. is actual critical theory, which is different. You can talk about it. You can't talk about "Social Justice Warriors" because it's a bogeyman, and not really relevant to talking about depictions of female sexuality. Quote:
You are the first person to drop to the level you claim people are already at. YOU.
Quote:
Your entire post translates to: "Everyone needs to agree with my side of a discussion or you're all hateful monsters who bully into silence, and anyone that posts disagreeing with my biased assessment is just proving me right".
Nice logic (or lack of). Nice and self-serving.

I don't get to have that in the first place? The comics code did so much damage. Imagine if we actually had gotten bisexual Storm & Wolverine like Claremont wanted. But we never did. Even after the code stopped existing, people still didn't want to rock the boat with too many queer characters. I find most people who complain about SJWs tend to be somewhat "Libertarian" identified(as in right wing libertarian, not Noam Chomsky style) and probably American, and they don't really understand how privilege works or that there are other ways to fuck things over other than outright banning something or holding a gun to someone's head. Negative vs. positive liberty, punch up vs. punch down, these are very important concepts to understand and most people just don't. Also conservatives, not liberals(I'm not a liberal, i'm more of a left libertarian but i'm going to assume everyone here equates SJW with liberal), are more likely to ACTUALLY get things banned. Look at a banned book list sometime.

the problem is this....
If I don't like something and I choose not to buy it, my problem is solved. It only affects me and me alone If I don't like something and I choose nobody can buy it, I now affect people who don't share my personal taste by forcing my influence onto everyone The first method solves the problem for the offended, why does it have to apply to everyone?? Why can't everyone have the option to choose what they like or dislike? People who think you ARNT suitable to make your own choices are people who think you ARNT suitable for freedom...even if they word it a different way Freedom is being able to choose, not to be chosen for like you seriously need to get some perspective on this one? this is about market saturation for something that's fallen by the wayside. the prominence of that particular costume for a strong and important character left a bad taste. that's a reasonable reason. whereas there isn't a reason for having most superheroes be straight white dudes when the audience is diversifying rapidly. where's my phyla vell and moon dragon figures? i guess those characters were never really pushed. Given her popularity, it's pretty crazy how we still have no sign of a Kamala Khan figure.

Again, there is such a thing as positive and negative liberty.
You're talking about Freedom to Choose but I can't choose to buy action figures of the sort of characters I like. That's even before we get into how 1/18th lines are being treated like shit and completely dropped by Mattel... Anyway, people who haven't really experienced oppression or subjugation go nuts over stupid pointless inconsequential shit like this all the time. Ironically while bitching about people(SJWs) they perceive as getting upset over nothing... Does "No More Slave Leias" actually affect your life or even happiness as a collector in any real way? A lack of LGBTQ figs actually does feel kind of shitty in a very real way. That's a much more extreme situation than wanting to own a piece of female sexuality.

Excuse me but calling someone "queer" isn't PC, this is 2015 come on people.
On a serious note: people are way too vocal in response to a gay character if they are against that, which may intimidate companies from making products or even more LGBT characters to begin with.

Where does the singular "I" come into place here? Companies don't stop putting out products based off of the opinions of one person. They make decisions based off of how many people will or will not buy a product, and it seems like they've come to the conclusion that enough people aren't particularly fond of the message that the Slave Leia merchandise is putting out there for it to no longer be worth it to make merchandise for that particular character. It's as much a business decision as it is a moral decision.
You can call people pussies and pansies if you want, but at the end of the day, it is what it is. as far as why companies capitulate, the squeaky wheels get the grease, most people would look at this conversation and say who the fuck cares. but ultimately in our social justice joke age if you can get a couple people with no lives to complain loud enough you intimidate companies with fear of a "social backlash" if they don't bow to your demands. that's not a free market. it's actually fascist by definition. they made more bikini Leah's because they sell. no kid wants Leah in the iconic white gown (which she was wearing when she was rescued by her brother, a male, and a misogynistic space pirate, also male, got a problem with that?) because it's boring, Leah's most bad ass moment in the whole trilogy was choking Jabba's ass to death with her chains! |
