(many, but not all) MOC collectors suffer from this supposed theory that their collections will be worth a ton some day. this is hogwash. yes, if you collected in the 80's etc and kept all your stock in tact, your collection is priceless...
but in this day and age, you are playing yourselves. your collections will only be worth what someone is willing to pay for them, not what the vintage market entails. MOC MU Vision will not end up in the same conversation as MOC '85 Snake Eyes w Timber. night and day. But if this was said to people who had this dilemma back in the 80's and they all opened their shit. They'd be kickin themselves. I don't expect any of these MU figs to be worth a fortune. But when I hand them down to future generations. Being in the packages 30 years from now. They'll def be more valuable than lose ones. I've seriously weighed all the pros & cons of each side of the argument & I find myself sticking to my guns and leaving them in their packages. If I had more ML figs, I would open them. They just look better open to me than the lil guys. But my other problem with that is. I have 0 ML other than the two I just opened. If I were to collect the older ones I'd be paying retail x 2 or more in most cases. Forking over $20-$50 on a single figure means no way am I going to be able to justify opening them. I realize I could buy loose ones. I'm jut no used to that unless it's something from the 80's or older. However I will be purchasing a few loose ML. I want a Task Master sooo bad. What many fail to understand is the following:
Not very many were keeping toys preserved in packages during the infancy of action figure collecting. Kids were ripping em open and not many thought twice about doing so. A few pioneers kept their merch in packages and are now probably financially comfortable if they sold. Difference today is the toy collector market is MASSIVE and every other dude is trying to cash in on some supposed future. Too many MOC collections equals less demand. The market is over saturated. Plain and painfully simple for some to accept. |

Well , there are 2 ways at looking at this. Keeping will RETAIN value for SURE. MOC collectors ARE NOT GOING to pay top dollar for LOOSE items. Opened figures LOSE ALL VALUE. Once you open them price point is WORTHLESS. If you have money then buy a couple for a RAINY day. You will be glad you did. Carded RARE figures can fetch a pretty penny.

Opened figures do not "LOSE ALL VALUE." They are not "WORTHLESS." And MOC figures do not always appreciate, nor do they always retain their value. It all varies on demand. A figure that's in demand is going to be in demand, no matter what. Classics Rodimus, Classics Starscream, Classics Skywarp are as desired opened, as they are MoC, as people want them reguardless.

But that doesn't mean everyone out there should just open all their figures because "fuck it, too many people collect MOSC". For every person that opens the same figures I own. That just makes mine a lil more rare to be carded each time. Over 30-40 years, there will be less and less MOSC MISB figures from today. Get rich quick, no. Fall on hard times someday & it's nice to know I can get say $50 for a figure opposed to $20 cuz I had to open it. |

Just like a butcher won't tell you his meat stinks, a scalper won't tell you to open and enjoy your toys. They both want ya to BUY... and overpay.
Don't believe the hype. If Vision is ever re-released, your current "grail" will be worth retail price. Look at what happened to Jean Grey, light Bullseye, Sunfire, Thanos, etc. This so called "value" plummeted beyond belief. Light Bullseye on card was at one point (for those collecting MU long enough to remember) considered the most expensive MU card on the market. Yes, more than Vision at the time. How much is that light Bullseye worth now? Wbcollect just sold one MOC for less than $8!!!! Last edited by SH0CKWAVE; 05-14-2012 at 05:30 PM.. |

when I started collecting back in 05 I collected moc, then I switched to loose, now its just a matter of when I have enough time to sit down and enjoy opening the figure, though the longer you wait the harder it is to open.

See I was the opposite. I used to open all mine. First run of Movie Maniacs, the super bloody ones. Opened em all the day I got em. Now I wish I still had them Loose or MOSC.

personally I enjoy my collection MOC as much as loose collectors enjoy their's. It not really about resale value even though if I ever had to sell my collection (God forbid) I could easily get back what I paid for it (retail price minimum my collection is worth quite a bit but we're talking about some HTF expensive figures too). The other thing is I personally have my room set up for an MOC collection and would not be able to even come close to having room to open everything up and pose it or whatever. My figures do just fine on their shelves and pegs. It would take way more shelves for me to display them on since they can't really stand on top of each other. Anyway just my personal reasons. I don't have time to play with my toys anyway. But I do like to look at them everytime I walk into my room!

AGREED.
It's even worse when you live in a rural area, with tiny little spiders crawling everywhere. Lived in a place where I could have something on a shelf for two years with only the absolute lightest bit of dust, to a place where you leave something alone for a week, and it looks like it's sat there for ten years. >_< But I've found Swifer duster refills to be brilliant. Cleans a figure off in seconds, and really gets in those crannies that are so frusttraiting. Especially for transformers.

Regular colored Vision Iron Patriot Norman Osborne Variant Warpath X Force Uniform Translucent Dr. Strange These are a few examples. Marvel Legends Crossbones DC Universe Classics Gentleman Ghost Naked Cheeta Black Atom These lists can go on and on. No one is going to pay good money for loose figures. Carded will bring a pretty penny if you wan to re sale. |

I think there's a fair argument for both sides. I've been out of the buying new toys gig for awhile now, but still get a random thing here and there. I don't open them because frankly I have no real interest in displaying/playing/opening them in the first place.
On the other hand, if you're buying a toy, then you're doing so because you want to play with them, or at least display them so you can see them often. Why keep them in plastic? I personally only think that keeping anything new sealed is a waste unless its a high end collectible. Sealed toys is really only for older items like G1, or 80s Joes. |

In fact, the Black Adam reissue is currently *still* on shelves! In fact, so was Harley Quinn,, Joker, and Hawkgirl, who were far more valuable find than Adam or Gentlemen Ghost. You really need to learn your facts before you start making all these hilarious claims.

He's a troll? Since I only stick to about a quarter of the forums, this is the first time I've encountered him.
