Pretty decent looking figure. Great shoot as usual! I think I like the yellow hair better tho. But I'm not a DBZ fan, so not sure if the green is more desired by fans.

I was very excited for this release, and am lucky enough to have gotten one for a relatively decent price (i.e. on the lower end of too much).
In Broly's first appearance (Movie 8), his hair was most definitely this shade of green most of the time, with a few inconsistencies here and there. However, even this is not the most accurate representation of his usual Movie 8 appearance. There were a few shots or frames where his hair was yellow, such as attachment 1 below. There was, I believe, only one instance where his hair and eyebrows were the same shade of green, as with the SDCC release, seen in attachment 2. Most of the time though, his hair was green, and his eyebrows were yellow. I think the next time we see a Broly release, it will resemble attachment 3. Still, for the time being, I love this version, and the non-mismatched eyebrows are a non-issue for me. |

I love SH Figuarts, and I especially love DBZ Figuarts. They were also my virgin entry point into collecting import figures. My very first was Piccolo, whom I still absolutely adore. Since then I've added battle-damaged Goku, Cell Games Vegeta, Gohan, Future Trunks and SS Goku. I love them all, and they are some of, if not my most favourite action figures, pure hand candy, and so incredibly fun to play around with and get into all sorts of anime-specific dynamic poses, especially when paired with the few effect pieces I have from Figuarts. But this Broly, I just can't get into him. Whilst I know he is completely accurate to the source material, those proportions just look ridiculous. The HUGE rounded-ball shoulders and upper torso just look silly to me, like the "powering-up muscle-enlarging vein-pumping" that is a hallmark of DBZ taken to extreme (and almost deformed) levels. Maybe I'm alone in this train of thought, I don't know. I love that they have made such a giant figure, that is really awesome and a credit to them, and I really want to want to like this figure, I really do. Maybe I need to go back and watch the Broly movies to get myself as pumped-up about him as his muscles are pumped up to take on Goku.. I don't know, how would he go trying to find a t-shirt in his size? Or a long sleeve one that would even suit his super muscly frame for when he wants to go on a date with some lucky (or unlucky?) lady somewhere nice? I don't even think Capsule Corp would make those..

Perhaps in his 2nd and 3rd movies his hair is a normal yellow/blonde/gold, but in Movie 8, his hair is green. This fits him being both a villain, and something beyond our usual understanding of a "Super Saiyan." I find it more appropriate than yellow hues because green is typically associated with evil/threatening, and him, being almost godlike ("legendary") indicates that by nature he should be threatening. He should be in control of the situation when it comes between him and YOU. Aside from that, it should just be a physical trait of his that anyone watching Movie 8 should notice. Especially in shots that feature him in the same frame with our heroes, who are depicted in their usual yellows. I also feel that there is a tendency amongst buyers to justify inaccuracies in their purchases in order to diminish the feeling of dissatisfaction in what he/she bought. That is something I myself engage in, as evidenced by my previous post in this thread, in which I screenshot the only instance where SDCC Broly is totally accurate. In response to Joelston, My personal belief is that any character design can be justified by its context. I completely understand your grievances with Broly's character design. In fact, I wouldn't look to the movies for any satisfaction for how he is depicted. After watching Movie 8, I listened to my favorite DBZ podcast hoping they would also feel that this movie is far and away inferior to the primary series. Instead, I found them using words like "masterful." No, no, no, no no. Movie 8 was entirely horrible. HORRIBLE. BAD. NOT GOOD. Broly is supposed to be the Legendary Super Saiyan. If anything, he deserves an entire arc dedicated to him. He is something that not only we as viewers, but also the characters themselves, have been waiting to witness, and thought that they had. Broly should be a complete surprise, shocking, mind blowing, incomprehensible, godlike. People complain about Vegeta's characterization in Movie 8, and I can agree. They overplayed his reaction at seeing a near-god. However, he is the only character that reacted appropriately. No one in the movie treated the story as anything more than it was, a less than theater-worthy bout between an unusually-strong adversary. I think Broly's entire story should be re-written. It should properly convey his power, and hopefully, give him some importance in the histoy of DBZ. I think his character design properly conveys him as the Legendary Super Saiyan that we had heard so much about, yet the story itself did not deliver on this characterization. |
