Night Force Week by Phoenix Customs
Mission: ‘’When the sun goes down, the GI JOE NIGHT FORCE squad is ready for action! NIGHT FORCE is a covert team specializing in nighttime surveillance, reconnaissance and defensive operations. Missions conducted in the darkness have special problems, which the NIGHT FORCE squad has overcome with enhanced skills, sophisticated hardware and advanced technology. They use the element of surprise to vanquish Cobra, striking under cover of darkness and disappearing into the night, mission accomplished!’’ – Text adapted from original Night Force mission statement Why Night Force? Remember Project 96? It was the original name for what morphed into GI Joe Resurgence. We won’t bore you guys with the details again (you can read about it here if you like: Oreobuilder's Blog: GI Joe: Resurgence Starts July 1st), but this sub-line was meant to be a part of the larger project. We picked Night Force because, in 1996, it would have made sense, from Hasbro’s perspective, to bring this theme back to support a more ‘’back-to-basics’’ approach. So, we set out to pick characters that could have been repainted at the time. In our planning, we mapped out a main line, mail away products and a retailer exclusive line. When we put together the Resurgence order of battle, we quickly realized that we could not fit Night Force within our 31-day time frame and that the theme and characters no longer fit our overall objective of a ‘’soft reboot’’ of the line. However, we had all these customs already made. Therefore, we decided to split it off. Our approach was simple. These figures are meant to be repaints and kitbashes from existing figures and vehicles. Contrary to Resurgence, which would have had a lot of hypothetical new tooling, Night Force would have been assembled from existing parts and represent existing characters. Like the originals, we planned them out to be a series of thematic 2-pack and vehicles. Once again, GITrekker lent us his services to flesh out these characters and Sam is back with some awesome brand new packaging. We’ll be rolling out our complete line-up all next week starting on Monday the 27th. Sit back, enjoy and comments are always welcome! Phoenix Customs Phoenix Customs? What is that? Quick answer, it is our small group of customizers started by Bucky, Dusty79 and Oreobuilder. The three of us have started working on so many common projects that we decided we needed a name for our little gang. Also, aside from GITrekker and Sam Panico that have been contributing regularly to our projects, we will also be adding new members to our team shortly. We have enlisted some help from two others very recently for a large project next summer. Given all of this, we figured it would be simpler to have one name to round up everyone. It’s easier and it makes custom thread titles much shorter! Each one of us will continue posting our own customs separately on occasion, but for our large projects, expect to see Phoenix Customs. We’ll be kicking this off with a brand new project starting tomorrow and lasting a whole week.... [Read More] |

I don't know about you, but I'm an absolute sucker for anything base on G.I.Joe vs Transformers Crossovers. What's not to love about two fan favorite properties facing off against one another?
That's why my jaw always drops to the floor once Hisstank.com Moderator and Master Customizer Phantro shares his custom crossovers with us. This time around, Phantro tackles one of the latter year Transformers releases, HardHead! If you're not familiar with the Autobot Headmaster Soldier, check out what the TF Wiki has to say - Hardhead is a soldier to his core. A soldier with a stubborn streak a megamile wide. He's stubborn to the point of rejecting outright any path but his own, any idea that goes against his natural instinct or inclination (namely fighting), and any advice he didn't come up with himself. He doesn't talk much, and when he does, it tends to be blunt and terse, if not outright rude. A soldier doesn't waste time on social niceties when there's a war to fight. Perhaps surprisingly, given his limited social aptitude, Hardhead has found a good companion in Duros, his binary-bonded Nebulan partner, who enjoys warfare just as much as Hardhead does. The two mesh so well, it's been said that theirs may be the best match among all the Autobot-Nebulan teams. The latest incarnation of Hardhead finds him taking on a new role as the Scorpion Tank for the G.I.Joe team. You'll want to join us after the break to read Phantro's take on his latest creation and to see more images of this amazing custom!... [Read More] |

Our friends behind the line have just updated the Eagle Force Returns Facebook Page with a new image of the evil R.I.O.T. trooper and needless to say, he looks fantastic! Although just a drawing at this time, you can already tell how awesome this figure is going to be. The drawing shows a new removable hat that fits over the Troopers goggles, plus an ammo pouch that plugs in to the figures leg, not to mention his weapon of choice, of course! Make sure to stay tuned to Eagle Force Returns for new developments on the line. We'll continue to share news with you as it becomes available. What do you think of the new R.I.O.T. trooper? Our friends over at 3DJoes are looking to get your feedback - Would you support a series of G.I.Joe art books? Check out the details below from 3DJoes -
Please voice your opinion on the comments section. Here's my vision for the books: Volume 1 1982-1994 Figures Volume 1 would feature every carded figure from 1982-1994, as you can see on the 3DJoes Yearbook Page, but much ore polished like the recent 3DJoes Posters. It would also feature art for the mail aways like The Fridge. I envision the front of the page to be the full bleed carded figure and the back of the page featuring the file card, fan recollections of seeing the product on shelves, geared up images of the figures from my 360 spins and possibly pre-pro art. Here's an example of the level of digitial retouching that you'd see throughout the book. Volume 2 1982-1994 Vehicles Volume 2 would feature the front panel of every vehicle box full bleed on the front of each vehicle page. On the back I envision fan recollections of seeing product on shelves, images of the vehicles from my 360 spins and image galleries and possibly pre-pro art or blueprints. Here's an example of the level of digital retouching that you'd see through the book. If those two volumes broke even, I could see making a 3rd volume. Volume 32 could feature other memorable art from the catalogs, magazines, posters, books, etc. I'll of course continue working towards this long term goal by photographing and digitally restoring the necessary images as I build 3DJoes. So, do you want to see these books come to life? Voice your support so that I can share it with the powers that be! -------------- You can sound off on the 3DJoes Facebook Page or here, on the Hisstank.com forums after the break!... [Read More] |

Wow, has this week flown by or what? Hard to believe that it's already day 6 of Night Force week, brought to us by the recently formed Phoenix Customs team! Today bring us even more awesome updates of classic characters. Check it out -
Day 6: Ex-Cobra Agents TEAM EX 2-Pack Filecards by GITrekker Packaging mock-ups by Sam Mercer by Bucky I have bought many of the BBTS 7 packs in the last couple years, as the price for them is pretty fair and the parts always come in handy. As a result of that, I have numerous Mercer pieces laying around. I thought he would be a fun addition to Night Force, and went with a slightly different route with the lower legs, using BAT. Ones, in a slight nod to the vipers that came out around 2001-2002. After he was finished and painted up, he ends up being my favorite one I did for the project. He just flows very smoothly. Storm Shadow by Bucky I'm not a big ninja lover, so I usually buy them for parts and pieces. With that, I had pieces from the dark ninja from retaliation, and the dollar general storm shadow. Once I popped that blue head on the dark body, the rest fell into place, creating a unique look for Storm Shadow. -------------------- Make sure to check out these latest additions to the project, plus catch up on Days 1 through 5 after the break!... Day 7 of Phoenix Customs' Night Force week was yesterday, but being in a candy induced coma, I missed it. No better time than the present to rectify that oversight!
The final day of Night Force week brought us the Mystics and Terror theme, along with an amazing Night Force styled G.I.Joe Raider, renamed and repurposed as the G.I.Joe Night Force Night Terror with a Night Force themed driver, Hot Seat. Here are details on the 2 pack, named Team Mystic: Airborne by Oreobuilder Airborne was one of my first Joes and has remained a favorite of mine over the years. The Night Tomahawk was the first thing I wanted to do for this project (I had more than enough spares since the TRU clearance sale), so making a Night Force Airborne seemed like a natural fit. It was a good opportunity to update the recipe a bit with some modern parts and give the chopper a crew. Spirit by Bucky I like Spirit. I'm not a die hard Spirit fan by any means, but he's probably in my top ten. I hadn't realized it, but upon looking, I've done a Spirit custom every year since 2012. (Regular, air commando, and now Night Force). I tried to go with a look that is easily copied, doing absolutely no modifications on the figure. It's just parts swapping and paint. I struggled with the webgear for a bit, until deciding on the Outback vest, giving him a unique look that isn't usually associated with Spirit. Getting the skin tones to match and keep the figure fully poseable wasn't going to be an option, so I went with the painted face route, which has been seen a couple times on some great customs. I'm very happy with how he turned out. Night Terror w. Hot-Seat by Dusty79 This started out as just an idea to add some other Night Force vehicle to the lineup and I was all for it, but in a project like this, that turned out to be tougher than it sounds. We didn't want to simply do a remake of a Night Force vehicle done by Hasbro and we wanted it to be something unique that Hasbro has not reissued multiple times. Then you have to think about is the vehicle compatible with modern Joes and by the time you sort all that out it makes it pretty tough to find a vehicle that fits and I hit a few dead ends. After combing through yojoe.com and much thought, Bucky and I decided on the Raider. It is a vehicle that has plenty of space in the cockpit for modern figures, it has not been reissued, and it was never a Night Force vehicle. The fact that it had a driver that had not been updated was a bonus. ---------- OreoBuilder has posted up new images of all the amazing customs shared throughout the course of this past week, so make sure to join us after the jump to get your fill of Night Force!... Check out this amazing custom Modern Era Hi-Tech with UGCV by Hisstank.com forum member TheGabrielAngel! Here's the backstory on these amazing pieces -
Hi-Tech is the G.I. Joe Team's Operations Support Specialist. His real name is David P. Lewinski, he was born in St. Paul, Minnesota. His primary military specialty is Armament Research & Design. His secondary military specialty is Telecommunications. Although he is more likely to be wielding a soldering gun than one that shoots bullets, Hi-Tech can be depended on to pitch in during a real fight, by taking control of any number of complex technological weapons systems used by the G.I. Joe team as they battle the nefarious forces of Cobra. A good-natured soul who can't bring himself to say "no," Hi-Tech spends most of his off-duty time repairing the personal vehicles of G.I. Joe teammates, fixing their TVs and stereo systems, and troubleshooting their PCs and laptops. He doesn't mind it a bit. He says it's all good practice for when a key piece of a weapons system fails during a real fight. His latest work involves developing the Warhound UGCV (Unmanned Ground Combat Vehicle), a robust, compact, unmanned, autonomous, multi-purpose ground reconnaissance, surveillance, and target acquisition (RSTA) vehicle system possessing a scouting and direct engagement capability. It provides the G.I. Joe forces with remote reconnaissance, surveillance, and target acquisition, nuclear, biological and chemical reconnaissance, obstacle breaching, and direct fire capability to neutralize threats and reduce risk to the G.I. Joe fighter. ------ Check out more images and share your thoughts on this killer custom after the break!... [Read More] |

DeNA, the studio behind the G.I.Joe Battleground Mobile Video Game, announced today that the game will be shut down on January 5, 2015. Here's the scoop from an announcement made in game -
An Important Message from the G.I.Joe: Battleground Dev Team Dear Joes and Cobras, We have a tough announcement to make. G.I.Joe: Battleground will be shut down on January 5, 2015 (PST). As of today, November 3, 2014, we will support the game, but we will NOT be creating any new content for it. That means no new events and no new cards. On January 5th the game servers will be shut down and G.I.Joe:Battleground will cease to be. The shops, the Golden Token Draw, Investigation Steps and Daily PvP have been updated to provide you with lots of Flag Points and resources at rock-bottom prices. November 15 (PST) will be the last time you can spend coins in G.I.Joe: Battleground. It's been a tough few weeks leading up to this announcement, and there is a lot we'd like to say (and wanted to say) that we can't (and couldn't), but we'll be as open and forthcoming about what led us to this point as we can be. We went through a long period of experimentation this past year, and thanks to your love of G.I.Joe and the resulting support of our game, we were able to run Battleground and keep sharing this amazing IP with you for a relatively long time. Not all of the experiments were a success. There were some mistakes, but we believe that we met our goals of serving our players well, doing justice to the IP, and correcting any mistakes as quickly and fairly as we could. We believe this because you stuck around and played the game, added to the community and competed to outdo each other with your favorite G.I.Joe characters for over 15 months. Please accept our sincere thanks for your commitment. Many of you will be very unhappy about this announcement, and with the game shutting down we are limited in what we can do to address that, but we decided internally that we would like to offer something. DeNA Vancouver runs a cartoony military-themed tank tactics game called Super Battle Tactics (SBT), and we have created powerful G.I.Joe-inspired tanks available ONLY to fans migrating from G.I.Joe to SBT. We would be extremely privileged and happy to provide Joe Fans with a starter package to get you rolling very quickly in that game. If this interests you, follow these steps: 1. Download and launch Super Battle Tactics. 2. On the Login screen, hit the Mobage icon in the bottom right. 3. Log in with your Mobage ID. Or, and only if you've linked your Facebook account to your Mobage ID, you can login via Facebook. 4. Allow 72 for your gifts to reach your inventory. If you were a Joe player before November 3rd and you complete these steps by Monday, November 10th (PST), you will receive a generous gift package in SBT goods. If you have any trouble please send us a note at [email protected] and we will hook you up. That about covers it. With regret, this is likely the last time the G.I.Joe: Battleground Dev Team will be reaching out to you all. Thank you again for your time, patience and passion for G.I.Joe. Yo Joe, The G.I.Joe: Battleground Dev Team ------------ There you have it, folks. Some might say that the writing was on the wall over the last few weeks, as there's been no in-game updates and/or word from the team at DeNA. Join us after the break to share your thoughts on this news and to sound off on whether or not you will be switching over to Super Battle Tactics.... [Read More] |

Back in last August, we at Hiss Tank uncovered that Hasbro has applied for a new Toy Trademark; Micro Machines. It was slightly important to us since there was a G. I. Joe and Cobra toy vehicle line from the Micro Machines series back in 1999.
Today, we may have finally uncovered why Hasbro has applied for that trademark in recent times. Thanks to the United States Patent And Trademark Office, we found out that Hasbro is planning for a possible Micro Machines Animated Series. However, we do not know how this will work for the Joe brand. It's just a little hope; where we too may benefit from the new Animated Series should Hasbro decide to make some G. I. Joe toys out of it (very much like how they did with Kre-O). Fingers crossed, everybody.... [Read More] |
