The Universe is expanding.... (pics to follow in next post)
I recently started thinking about the evolution of my collection. I usually only bought a few figs here and there when the line was running, especially pre-Vonner, as while it was nice they were finally making good 3 3/4" scale Marvel characters a lot of the offerings were just awful. So I bought what I liked and left it at that, occasionally slapping some paint on a figure or two. It was more of a buy and collect hobby than anything else back then. Then the Iron Man movie happened. It's still a little hard to believe it's been 10 years and dozens of on-screen characters since the first movie, and while I've no interest in making anything movie related, the MCU really rekindled my interest in Marvel Superheroes. I started getting a few digital comics here and there during that time and that led me to the point of wanting to re-create characters from my childhood in those outfits in MU scale. It then became an art project that I had originally planned to only be making my favorite characters in accurate costumes and that's it (mostly just X-Men as I'm always an "X-fan" first). Well...you guys have seen what it's exploded into. Still an art project, but a long term one. Beyond strengthening my art skills it's also helped to rekindle my imagination as I think up stories for the characters - or little tweaks to their backgrounds into something I find more interesting - while I'm making them. Makes it all a little more fun & I'm glad to share them. I've amassed so many different characters now I can start really thinking about diorama making as I have a wide enough variety to fill spaces. I did a random sampling of three of my shelves, and of the 80 figures on those shelves only 32 are untouched from the way they were shipped out of the factory. In comic news I've been reading the few issues of "Acts of Vengeance" that I've managed to track down. I really wish there was a trade of that "event". It was some fun stuff from a different era in comics. Speaking of that event, it's the first instance that I've read where Juggernaut was dubbed a mutant by Marvel. I thought that was an early to mid-2000's development, but no, they even peddled that nonsense back in the 80s. Juggernaut will never be a mutant to me. His powers are of mystic origin and that's that. This batch also got me looking into Hydra again, so it's a good time to finally finish reading the Secret Warriors series since I finally got the full run in digital format. Anyway, I can't remember the last thing I bought without the intent of customizing it so nothing on that front. Baghead there arrived a couple of days ago - I painted up the bag and feet to add some texture to them. I also gave him a quick spray to take off that plastic shine. The figure looks so much better now. So much so that I think I'll get another (if not two) to convert into a non-flame Johnny Storm & Mr. Fantastic. I'll be displaying Baghead with the FF and just need to make a FF She-Hulk and my base FF team will be set. Skurge is only there to hold the axe. While re-watching EMH a couple of months back I realized that Skurge's axe not only has fire magic, but also ice magic. Since I made my custom Skurge a fire axe I had to of course make him an ice axe also. Now that's done. So, anyway, onto the rest... Red Skull - Since I've been on a bit of a Captain America kick of late it was a good time to knock out some of his primary villains. First up was to redo the movie line Red Skull into an MU scale figure. I think it's been a year since I first talked about redoing this character and I really wanted to get him off the list. I have yet to have a Red Skull on display in any fashion since I moved and took down my old display of 'store bought' figures years ago. I had to get creative with this custom right off the bat as the neck peg on Star-Lord is rather long due to the inverted collar on the jacket. That piece alone causes the neck to sit higher as they added an extra peg to cover the space the collar takes up. So I had to not only account for the overly long neck but I also had this additional piece to cut off. Then I had to slice the neck itself in half keeping only the part that actually holds the neck ball. And then I had to take that and reattach it to the body and then sculpt the downturned collar onto the neck along with the epaulettes. That was only the start of the sculpting. I then added the chest pockets, the belt buckle and the jacket flap. (I have no idea what the actual name for that part of a jacket is and I don't care to find out.) For some finishing touches I cut the holster off my Doom (which will become a Doombot once I get the darker colored Doom) and attached that to the waist and added the arm bands - the left is Hydra and the right is a Nazi symbol. Lastly I added some silver to the various buttons and glossed the gloves and boots. Oh, late additions to this custom are the overcoat and hat from a different movie skull figure. I only bought that figure for these two pieces which was a bit of a waste of money, but I've done worse when it comes to my art projects. So, Cap's primary nemesis is complete and ready to join the Hydra section. The Red Skull fronts the European arm of Hydra in my MU along with overseeing the Hydra facilities in Russia. Along with Arnim Zola he was instrumental in converting Bucky Barnes into the Winter Soldier who, in my MU, is still under Hydra control. I like the idea of having a Hydra villain that Captain America is not willing to eliminate under any circumstances. Juggernaut - I really like Hasbro's Juggernaut figure. Quite a lot actually. It's just overall very well done. But, I've also felt something was holding it back from being great: Those legs are a bit too stubby. It's the same issue with all of Hasbro's oversized characters. You shouldn't be able to touch your knees while standing straight up. Anyway, I finally had a chance to remedy that with the Ragnorak Hulk figure from which I took the thighs and t-bar giving him a much needed height boost while only giving up the thigh swivel which I'm ambivalent about anyway. Getting that damn Hulk figure apart was a royal pain in the ass. 5 large pegs and some ridiculously strong glue hold that thing together. I finally had to cut the damn thing at the seams with the dremel and then pry it apart - with a considerable amount of force - to crack it open. (This is a good time to remind everyone to always wear eye protection when working with tools that can send bits of material flying into the air.) Next time I'm just going to take a hammer and flat head and bust the chest open. The only usable parts for me, are the arms and legs, neither of which require an intact torso. After spending too much time getting Hulk apart I then had to crack open the Colossonaut figure which was it's own ordeal. I ended up cutting that one open too just to save some time. After t-bar surgery and a light sanding I started putting Juggernaut back together. From there it was just a matter of putting him through my paint process to finish. I gave him a number of extra portraits depending on how I want to display him: standard helmet head; unmasked head (with empty helmet) & skullcap. I probably won't display it too often, but the skullcap head is my favorite. (Made it from a Hulk head sculpting the mask entirely along with sculpting a bigger nose.) I really like the way he came out, though I still might make another pair of thighs without the pattern. That's just a lot of sculpt work that I just don't care to do right now. Fortunately the number of characters I'd want to have at this height I can count on one hand and the others can actually use the thighs as is (for the most part) so I won't need to mess with sculpting up too many pairs of these. Now that I have a more appropriately scaled Juggernaut it's time to knock out some more mutant villains. D-Man - When I started this batch making this character wasn't on my radar at all. In fact I had never even given a thought to making a D-Man figure in any capacity, at any point. I was just randomly looking at parts, as well as the other figures in this batch, and got a sudden urge to make a D-Man figure and since this batch fit with Captain America so well, I went ahead and made him bumping the figure slated for this spot to the next batch. Even though I made this guy, I've yet to read about him in a comic actually doing anything. I first saw him in the aforementioned Captain America #350 in a 2-page spread of Cap's various allies over the years. And then again many years later during the Perez run of Avengers when he was there during the initial roster build with his unkempt appearance. So to go along with both of those instances I made heads to match: I sculpted up a bearded scraggly haired portrait from those Perez issues using a heavily re-worked Hyperion head. And for the more traditional look I sculpted up a Wolverine masked portrait using a Drax head. I was going to just use a Hasbro Wolverine head, but they were all too small, even from the oversized Wolverine figures. So this was the only way to go. I really like the bearded head I made the most. I'll definitely start with that head on display. And in case folks were wondering, I do change up my display, swapping out these extras I make, from time to time. So these additions do get used, even though I rarely spend any time in the room with the shelves. Anyway, I went with a bigger body as the character is often drawn large and muscular, so just using a yellow DD fig was out. I had to do some part swapping to achieve the overall look I wanted but it came out well. He has just the right amount of mass to match most of the art I've seen. I now have another Cap ally in the fold. Wondering who else Cap usually pairs with. I have no interest in making a Rick Jones right now, if ever, so I don't know. Maybe I'll make a Jack Monroe Nomad... Captain America - As I've stated before, I never really "got" Captain America as a character. On the page he was just boring and the action elements don't come across that well given the scope of his abilities. Before the MCU I started to get a better feel for the Captain following the Marvel Ultimates animated films. Those put his action abilities on better display, but the MCU really made me more appreciative of the character. And so, I wanted a good Cap to take his place in the collection and with the other Avengers. That meant taking a fresh look at the MU Cap. As with Juggernaut I really was 'ok' with the Hasbro Cap. However, while the MU figure is well done it unfortunately came after a number of other Cap figures and all of those other Caps have sculpted scales on the torso. So, first things first was to find a Cap to take the upper torso and arms from that had the scales. A quick crack and swap and that was easily done. Then I had to find a good head to replace that rather dopey looking one that Hasbro used - I just don't like it, I think it's the wing placement. I liked the head from the KMart set, so I used that one after a bit of modding to get it to properly fit on the body. Except for the belt the rest came from the MU Cap, minus the 'throwing' hand which was from an Ant-Man. But, I couldn't stop there! There was more I wanted to do with the fig to bring him more inline with my collection, so I took one of the many extra shields I have and made one pristine (for that comic book 'nothing ever mars the shield' look) with a multi-layered gloss to really give it a shine and one battle worn and badly in need of a repaint (from one of those extended space missions for instance). That's one thing in particular that I liked about the MCU films. The idea that the paint on his shield would never scratch is absurd. I can buy that it's indestructible, but it wasn't made of red, white and blue metal. Fortunately I had two shields with intact shoulder straps so I used those leaving me with none left. Shame. Anyway, as I was winding down working on this custom I started thinking about the Toybiz unmasked Captain America that was in the 2 pack. I really wanted an unmasked portrait for alternate display options. Simple enough, Hasbro already made one right? Well, that head also wouldn't fit on the body without modding. Unfortunately I wasn't checking/ paying attention as I was opening the neck hole and drilled straight through the top of the head. Whoops! So that meant I head to repair the hole that I made. Irritating that I did that, but it also gave me an excuse to pull out the sculpt compound and make a loose mask for around his neck for when I want to have him on display maskless. Despite some minor, self-inflicted, hiccups he came out well. It took three different Captain America figures to put this guy together, but the results are just what I wanted. Now I have my ultimate (no pun intended) Captain America - with scales! - ready to join the Avengers display. Cap Stand: I actually had the Captain America figure completely done when I started thinking about how to deal with all the extras I added to him. At first I just wanted something to hold the second shield for taking pics, however, much like the 'rock stand' with Terrax that random thought spiraled into the stand I ended up making here. In case I want to use the stand for a different character, the eagle (original 80's Freedom for you Joe fans) is removable along with the name plate. I added pegs to hold the second head and the 'loose' mask. The extra fist is just sunk into the styrofoam and easily removable along with the flag (another Joe accessory from someone). The smaller peg at the front is for the second shield when both are on it and can also be removed. Actually, the only thing permanently affixed to this is the long post which I did for stability's sake. The foam base is glued onto the figure stand; also for stability. For something I hadn't intended to make it came out well. I'll probably be making more of these stands going forward. Heinrich Zemo - Between the comics, the MCU and the Avengers:EMH I have no clue what to make of all the Zemos. They're kind of all over the place in terms who is named what so I'm just calling this guy Heinrich and leaving it there. With that out of the way, I've been watching a few Marvel movies recently and watched Civil War for the first time in ages. That reminded me I had planned to make this version of Zemo and totally forgot about it. So I went digging into my 'to make' drawer and pulled out the parts bag and got to work. I started with sculpting over the Hasbro Zemo head to make the hood. It doesn't look like it, but there's full r.o.m. for the head. I'd thought about using a 25th Cobra Commander head, but those pin heads are all too small and ridiculous looking so this was a better option. I sculpted the band/ crown/ whatever that thing is along with the fuzzy collar. Legs came from a star-lord that I sculpted the boot fur onto. I added a dr. strange waist piece and made a modern looking belt from an omega red harness since the classic one from the art piece I chose is rather bland. In my MU I've factored in the longevity inducing effects of Virus X (I like that better than Adhesive X which sounds like a 3M experimental glue) allowing Heinrich to have long life and extreme physical endurance which is the only way I could work the character into my display. With his son, Helmut beside him as a loyal Lieutenant, the Zemos head the arm of Hydra based out of the Amazon River Basin, one of six that report directly to Baron Strucker himself. The Hydra logo in my MU isn't just symbolic, it also serves as a visual representation of the hierarchy for the organization with Wolfgang Von Strucker as the overall Supreme Hydra with six division heads beneath him running the six main Hydra factions segmented around the globe: Heinrich Zemo - South America; Edgar Lascombe - North America; Daniel Whitehall (Kraken) - Pacific Rim; Arnold Brown - Africa; Madame Hydra (Viper) - Asia & Middle East; Red Skull - Europe & Russia Red Guardian (Anton) - I really, really, had absolutely no intention to redo this figure. None. But I got two Cap figures recently and while one was slated for my new Captain America, the other I had no immediately plans for until I went to add Red Guardian Tania into the display. It was then that I noticed again how ridiculously small the Red Guardian figure from the K-Mart set is. That just wasn't going to do if I was going to have the character on display in my collection. So, it was time for yet another redo. This one was a much easier custom job. Other than fitting the head and belt it only took a paint job to get him done. I did drill a hole into the back to hold the shield since, unlike the Cap shields, it doesn't have straps and having the shields on a figure's arms, I've noticed, takes up much needed display real estate. And it stretches out the arm clasps which just bugs the hell out of me. Anyway, now the Red Guardians all fit the collection. Just need to knock out a few more Winter Guard members and I'll have the team as complete as I want it. Oh, there is one more Red Guardian design I might want to make. Depends on if he's a different character than the one I first made or not. If he is, I'll make him before too long. If not, no loss as there's still more WG members to make instead. Michael Korvac (EMH half-power) - I'd run across the name Michael Korvac at several points over my early comic days during childhood. The "Korvac Saga" itself was long before I was even born, so while I kept seeing the name I had no idea who Micheal Korvac actually was, and that being well before the Internet even existed I had no good way to even learn about the character. It really wasn't until the Avengers:EMH series that I got some actual exposure to who Michael Korvac was. While I still haven't read the entire Korvac Saga, the animated episode was enough to peak my interest in the character to the point of wanting figure representation in my collection. That meant looking into some designs and being beyond frustrated with what I found. Most art of Korvac has him in full power mode with a mostly reddish-orange color scheme with minimal detail anywhere. While I could have gone that route, it just wasn't what I wanted. It's just kind of boring. So I went back to the EMH episode and decided to use the half-powered look from when he was fighting the Avengers and Guardians, before he just went all cosmic on their asses and achieved full power potency. That part of the episode was really fun so I used that design with a few minor tweaks. Custom wise this guy was largely just painting. I added a cap belt to the Ryu body (sans arms - taken from a DD fig) and a namor head adding sculpt to the hair - and pants in spots. I then started by painting the whole figure yellow from head to toe for his "glowing" power look from the cartoon. After that I added shadow layers around the skin. I gave him red eyes with yellow pupils as the all white were kind of dull. I topped him off with an orange over coat and lightly brushed more yellow over the top. I did add the Kree markings from the show to his back as well. I'm glad to add another EMH inspired character to my collection. All those comic stories they put into animated form were very well done and I wish they'd gone a couple more seasons, they could have covered some really good Marvel storylines. But, I'm glad for what they did put out. If you can still find them, the Canadian A:EMH bluray sets are well worth the money. So my Korvac is complete. A long time character on my list finally scratched off. I doubt I'll make a non-powered version as I just don't see the point...but maybe if I get bored enough. Red Sonja - I've dithered back and forth over making a Red Sonja figure for a few years now. I saw the movie back in the 80's, complete with 80's suckitude - nostalgia be damned, that was a really bad movie! So with only the movie as a reference did I really want to take the time and use the supplies to make a figure of a character that I really had little affinity for? Especially since I've yet to read a single page of a Red Sonja comic book... So why'd I end up making this custom? It was actually a 12" figure that I saw on BBTS while picking up parts during their 3.75 sale not too long ago that finally convinced me to take a stab at a 33/4" scale Red Sonja. Since I was going to make her I had to look for some sort of reference material so I could pick a design. A Google search turned up a slew of comic covers with mostly the same look as that 12" figure, so that's what I went with in the end. Since she apparently walks around mostly naked all the time I didn't have to do too much to make her look, however what I did do was enough. I sculpted her...bra(?) thing, the shoulder armor and all the straps for that and her...waist flap? (At some point I should look up the names for this stuff.) Anyway, I also had to sculpt the arm band, both leg bands and the weird ass boot design she has. It really was a lot of sculpting which made her take a long time to complete. I also did some sculpting on her hair to change up the style a bit and to help it look more like the reference art. Although, as with Thundra, I again had to do a repair job on the left hand. I have no idea what's with the Valkyrie figure but with most of the ones I've gotten recently the left hand has broken off on just about every one. The peg is not only very small but when they assemble the figures the already small peg is fusing with the forearm. If you try to loosen it, the peg is so weak that it just snaps. I'm going to start swapping out these hands for ones from the smaller female bodies that have thicker pegs. You'd think they'd have made them the other way around with the smaller figure having the smaller wrist peg but no. Genius move, Hasbro. The She-Hulks I've used for customs don't have this problem. Anyway, I'm adding Red Sonja into the Asgardians for now. While she's most definitely in the realm of Marvel publishing, she's not a character that tends to interact with the hero population, but I've got no where else to put the figure right now. I've only seen one true crossover of any type where she pairs up with Spider-Man for something or other (I've only seen the comic's cover). On a side-note, I just saw there's a planned Red Sonja movie reboot on the way. I don't know where the rights lie and I'm not going to look it up, but despite Red Sonja being a Marvel character it's not going to be made by Marvel Studios. If it even happens. Hopefully it doesn't suck... |

Amazing work Mordiganne! Cap has to be my favorite. Thanks for sharing some of the details of your MU. Love how you have broke down the organization of your Hydra. Adding Red Sonja to your line up as an Asgardian is just brilliant.

Was Avengers the last film to have a dedicated 3.75 inch line?

Age of Ultron had one but it was the crummy 5PoA scheme.

nice Capt. America Mordiganne, and I like the way that you used multiple Captain Americas. I wanted the bulky version and super articulated, which also required the use of 3 figures.

Love that cap creator. I just picked up a comic pack mu dd and gave him and unmasked head. I wish theyd have used that same body for the armored dd...sadly that custom goes beyond my abilities.
