As a kid I always collected 2 comics ~ Uncanny X-Men & Amazing Spiderman. With Spidey being my favorite character. Ever since the clone sage the book has gotten worse and worse. I thought it hit rock bottom with the revelation Norman Osborn got Gwen Stacey pregnant but the mind switch with Doc Ock is horrific. Bad soap opera crap mixed with terrible horror movie tricks. I was glad to see the book end at issue 700.
Now the movies, I have always believed Spidey has the best rogue gallery of villains. The movies just can not get them right. Green Goblin, Venom, Sandman, whatever the hell James Franco was, and now Lizard in the last one. All bad in my opinion. I think Doc Ock came closest to getting it right and Spiderman 2 is my favorite of the movies. Seeing previews for the new movie they seem to have gotten it wrong again. Going with the more "ultimate" version of Electro, best I can tell an Iron Monger with a horn for Rhino, another James Franco type teenager on a glider, and based of the "BAF" a "ultimate" style Doomsday/Hulk Green Goblin. Yes I am complaining about the look only and maybe they characters will have great substance. Some would say you can not directly translate from the comics to the movies but I think you can take two amazing looking characters like Electro and Rhino and translate them much better. The new Marvel Infinte Spiderman line is fine. I have Beetle, Black Cat, and Carnage and like them. I will never get the Electro, I think it just looks bad. I will never, ever have a Superior Spiderman anything in my home and "BAF" no thanks. How great would it have been to have a traditional Electro and Rhino in this line. The Marvel Universe versions of them are awesome. Dear Peter Parker, You deserved much better! |

The wrong creative minds have been steering this ship for too long. How many CGI Hulk appearances do you need to prove that it works well enough now? Rhino could have been classic and still had 'tech', and I don't mind Foxx and the 'current' look for his character, but this really smells like Batman Forever

The Gwen Stacy "reveals" and the deal with the devil are the absolute worst thing about Spidey, ever. Superior is only a problem of how they did it. Doc Ock as Spider-Man is fun but the mind swap is BS. Had he transferred his kind into a clone of Peter and locked the real Spider-Man in stasis or something it would have been fine. Spider-Man writers seem to just not give a crap most of the time.

Spider-Man is also my favorite comic character and after 30-some years of reading his comics, watching his TV shows and seeing his movies, I can safely say that very little of what Peter does or has done to him bothers me anymore.
The movies haven't always been that great, but there is some good stuff in there (except for SM3, IMHO). Same thing with the comics. You may not see it now, but at some point a writer will click with you and make you love Spidey all over again. According to the film, that costume was billed as "New Green Goblin". While the costume and gear were laughable at best, the idea is partially based on the 616 comic. Harry did become the second Green Goblin out of vengeance for the "apparent" death of his father by glider impalement. But at least in that version, Harry wore the same outfit and used the same equipment/Goblin serum as his dad. Quote:
...and based of the "BAF" a "ultimate" style Doomsday/Hulk Green Goblin.
Well, at least not yet anyway.

Re: the comics, I don't mind when Spidey has bad soap opera subplots (that's one of my favorite parts of the book!), and I've enjoyed Superior Spidey, if only because it got Dan Slott away from writing Peter Parker. I like Slott's crazy ideas, but I have a different vision of what makes Spidey work--so having him write OckSpidey instead was fun. I wish some other writer would get a turn, soon.
The new movies--I want to like them, I don't even mind the ultimazation of bad guys, but that last movie was so bad. I disagree with Slott's Spidey, but I can respect that he is following his take on the character. The last movie had no idea what Spidey is supposed to be about. There was no responsibility; there was blatantly lying to capt. Stacey and then sneaking into his daughter's bedroom. There was no shy but smart Peter Parker who comes out of his shell as he learns his power, there was a smartassy punk skater who was sleeping in class and breaking into oscorp. And finally, let's not forget all of the awesome comic stories about Spidey finding out about his parents. You remember, the one where....oh yeah. There aren't any. Let's make movies about that! Meanwhile, thanks to Avengers blowing up huge, every company with a superhero license wants to do the same, and Sony, not Marvel, controls the characters I love the most and gives them to people who have no idea what they are doing. Yay. Now they can ruin venom, smythe, the sinister 6, rhino, etc, too. Last edited by uberlad; 02-05-2014 at 08:49 PM.. |

I'm not trying to start a fight here, but I haven't really hated all that much. When they did the "Brand New Day" thing and made the deal with the devil, I was annoyed. But the aftermath of it was fine by me.
As for the last movie, I think it worked well. Maybe it's not what we are accustom to, but a different spin on things isn't bad. There were a few stories that dealt with Peter's parents being spies during the cold war. While I don't see that happening in these new movies, doing a subplot involving his parents is cool (at least I think so). It's different from what we know. Maybe tech'ed out Rhino is a bit much, but I'm digging the rest. Again, this is my opinion. I'm not looking to start a fight. This is by no means an attack on anyone's post. At the end of the day, you like what you like. That being said, if a certain thing doesn't happen to Gwen in the way we all know it to happen, I'll be pissed. |

You mean you actually want to see Gwen cheating on Peter and getting knocked up by Osborn? With all these changes I bet it will be Harry instead of Norman. I hope they don't ruin such a classic story like that.

I've always empathized with the dedicated Spidey fans (the guys who have been reading 15+ years), because you guys have had to endure a LOT, lol! From the Clone Saga, to J. Michael Straczynski's mystical approach to Spidey (talk about an ambitious but ultimately disappointing run), to Brand New Day, Spidey readers have been along for a VERY bumpy ride! I can't think of any other character (Marvel, DC, or other) whose comics have had so many highs and so many lows.
I commend you guys for sticking around to be present for the good Spidey stuff !!! |

There are 2 things that ruined Spiderman for me; OMD and I think Clone Wars or something else. Thanks to OMD, Clone Wars was retconned out IIRC but that whole thing about Gwen having an affair with Norman...
W T F Anyways a new Rhino,...hell new Sinister 6 figures are sorely needed. Given that Hasbro has had the license since 2006 one would think we would have gotten a new Legends fully articulated Lizard by now but we have not. Same with Eddie Brock Venom, Anti-Venom, et al.

I'm not a fan of the movie versions or so-called "ultimate" versions of villain costumes.
I'm glad for the classic Spider-Man, Green Goblin, Hobgoblin, Rhino, Mysterio, Kraven the Hunter, and Electro we've received through the Marvel Universe 3.75 line. Unfortunately, there is still a need for classic comic costumed versions of Black Cat, Dr. Octopus, Vulture, Sandman, Scorpion, Shocker, Lizard, Kingpin, Jack-O-Lantern, Beetle, Speed Demon, Hydro-Man, Boomerang, Killer Shrike, Spot, Blank, etc. Given that past Spider-Man movie lines of action figures have failed to deliver classic comic costumes and the new Marvel line seems to be Avengers-focused it seems we'll not see a broader representation of Spidey's corner of the Marvel Universe any time soon.

From what I've heard Rhino is only in the new movie for 5 minutes total, most of which we've seen in the trailer footage. So no worries there for people hating on mecha-rhino. I'm not all that thrilled for a Jamie Fox Electro, or for another young Green Goblin, but still doesn't piss me off as much not seeing Hugh Jackman in a yellow suit, or seeing Eric Foreman as Venom, seriously wtf! Venom should of been played by Brock Lesnar.

^ This. Most certainly this.
Lesnar has no mic skills whatsoever, and it's painfully obvious when you see Paul Heyman cutting nearly all of Brock's promos. But if you're going to bring someone in specifically to cut your promos, Paul E. is a pretty good choice. Hell, let Lesnar do the mo-cap for a CGI venom. with someone like Dean Ambrose playing Eddie Brock (someone who can act and is built, but not monstrous).

I just wish we could get an awesome cartoon like we had in the 90s, how why couldn't they go on with it?

We did it was called Spectacular Spider-Man and was replaced prematurely by Ultimate Spider-Man.
I like the movies for the most part but I gave up on the comics a long time ago. Which is a shame since I basically learned how to read reading Spider-Man comics. |

I think it all comes down to what will translate well into "real life" that being said I find it funny that its when they alter it thats when it looks obsurd.
Examples: this new rhino ..WTF !!!gives us classic, it actually looks more realistic. electro: ummm the sparkplug head dress prob wouldnt work. Goblin: please go back to basics johnny storm...johnny storm...johnny storm...nuff said x-men- ummm matrix wants there look back the avengers actually work cause they stayed close to there comic look(minus pretty boy thor who really needs his trademark helmet) its funny how you go to a comic convention and you see ppl in cosplay totally pulling off these looks(my fav is a proper ms marvel) and you wonder why couldnt scarlet witch have her costume ? small tweeks here and there are fine its the complete butcher that freaks me out. cant wait to see kraven in all black military and have a necklace on and thats how we know its him smh |

Marvel gets it. You don't have to make these movies grim and realistic. Every movie doesn't have to be Dark Knight.
And yes Thor needs his helmet. They didn't have any problem with Loki wearing his for two movies. |
