Been keeping my eye on Prince Adam, have always loved that video. So I should have zero issues getting this guy at the con then right? I mean, if they're taking preorders that are made to order for people not actually going to the con, that means they will have plenty available for those of us that actually are going to be there that want him?

Yikes, well hopefully that won't be too much of an issue.
Honestly gonna be kinda pissed if I miss out on one despite going to the con, but people not going can get one no problem >_>

If on your 1st day you see you're having trouble, then pop onto your phone and pre-order it. It'll be up until the 22nd.

Oh, for some reason I thought the preorders were only open on the 9th, I completely misread that. That's a big relief actually. There's only really like 2 or 3 exclusives I'm feeling this year, this guy being the main one.

Honestly not a fan of it. It completely defeats the purpose of it being a convention exclusive. Not everyone should be able to get it, at least not without going on the aftermarket for it.

In my experience, the only people that have a problem with exclusives being widely released are those looking to profit.

The whole point of something being exclusive is, well, for it to be exclusive. It's a cool thing that not just anyone can get, it is a memory from a trip or convention, it says that you were there and that you could get something that someone else that couldn't go can't just go and buy at the store. Is it selfish? Sure, but that's not always a completely negative thing, sometimes it is ok to be a little selfish and I feel that this is a perfect example of that. Why make it an exclusive at all? Just sell it to whoever wants it whenever they want it.

Considering that I think scalpers deserve to be, well, scalped? Sod off.

In some cases, licensing or niche factor of the item means that's not possible. That's the companies choice. Collecting isn't a gated community and you need to come to grips with the fact more and more people are going to have access to exclusives with each passing year.

Where did I say anything about it being about being a better collector? I think it just devalues the idea of exclusives, something cool to offer those that attend that not just anyone else can have. That's kind of a cool thing. It's sorta the whole appeal of anything limited, because it is special, because there are memories attached to it, there's a story to it.
Again, why bother making exclusives at all? Just have it be a product that launches during the convention instead if you're just making it available to everyone anyways.

You're qualifying the sole enjoyment of a collectible based on others not being able to get it. You're admitting that your enjoyment of an items comes from you having it and not others. The content of the collectible is secondary to being able to say that you are the one that has it.
Exclusives absolutely have their place in the collectible world. But being salty about others having access to it is being negative just for the sake of it.

There you go putting words in my mouth again. Point out where I say the sole enjoyment comes from that fact? The closest I get is saying that is the whole appeal of something limited, which is just me stating a fact. Can you give me any reason something being limited is appealing if not by virtue of being limited meaning less people have it? Obviously I want Prince Adam (as this case is in regards to) because I think it's a fun reference to something, something that is perfect to do as an exclusive because it isn't making a character that someone wants or needs to finish their collection unavailable to them, rather it is a goofy thing that wouldn't really make sense to release at mass as a fun thing for people going to the convention. It's kinda like buying a tour shirt from a concert.

The best contribution I can make to this discussion is to go watch the Star Trek TNG episode 'The Most Toys.' Other than that, to me the problem is it makes it hard if not impossible to complete a set. 10 figures in a set and 1 exclusive and the only one you get is the exclusive looks kind of silly. Making the exclusive so hard to get that hard core fans can't get it pisses off customers who may then take their money elsewhere, and the customer is always right.

CCC. Edit: And as someone that spent years working retail and currently works in the casino gaming industry, "the customer is always right" is a load of crap that only entitled customers actually spew.

Which is why I said the exclusive should be something, for example, like Prince Adam here. It's a reference to an old internet meme, something fun and non-essential. Doing something like Hasbro pulled with their exclusives and making the last Prime Masters only available as part of an exclusive is a dick move, stuff like that should be made available to everyone. Whereas something like the sets they've done for Magic are perfectly reasonable, they're simply reprints of already available cards, done in a unique foiling and/or art style to make them special.

The memories attached to getting it at a convention will always be there, and you can always get it signed by various people that contributed to getting it made or the VAs, etc. at the convention too. But those that couldn't go for various reasons be it cost, medical reasons, or any other reason whatsoever, having the opportunity to get something they'd miss out on otherwise is a great thing. And really, anything that keeps scalpers from taking advantage of others is a godsend in itself. Keeps scalpers from taking advantage of the item and screwing over fans in general. And this Prince Adam figure in particular could do truckloads through the internet sales too. "Pride Prince Adam" is still a major point of enjoyment for a wide base of people that otherwise wouldn't go to SDCC. It's a smart company move to make it internet available. Most exclusives, sometimes the extra accessories are more than enough to make it distinct from a different major retailer release. Like Metallic Devastator or the extra weapons Metroplex with slightly different paint apps. But that's for mainstream retailer mass releases. Like POTP Primal's exclusive with the crown and mace, the throne packaging, crown, mace, and prime masters should really be the main emphasis of it as an SDCC exclusive tied to the fan poll of it. With a mass release of that colored version later as an encore of the positive response without those. But this prince Adam internet release of the exact same thing sold at the convention is also an amazing thing, and it's still limited. In fact it even helps Convention attendees like those that'd be too busy to wait in line to get it because of how much is going on at the convention. Helps better plan around it to make sure they still get what they want, while enjoying the convention too, besides helping those stuck at home. Like how this helps out Tony too or other site news staff. |

I don't mind either way. However a company wants to handle it's promotion is up to them. I might get the Prince Adam, just for the novelty. However, I DO like the idea of being one of X number of people to have something, like the TMNT box sets. It's not that I think others don't deserve it. Has nothing to do with merits. It's all about having something rare that tons of people wanted, but only a few could get. Like a Golden Ticket or a winning Super Lotto ticket.
What gets my goat are the entitlement crowd who think if it exists, they deserve it on a platter, or else they throw temper tantrums. Those people, I actually cheer when they don't get it or "have" to go to the scalpers to get the collectible at 3x the price.
