This is the first official merchandise featuring Papa I that isn't a shirt or just the cover of Opus Eponymous. Kind of a big deal!

This sort of gives me hope that Super7 will make an Ultimates Jerry Only figure from the Misfits.

I could live a thousand years and still never understand the infatuation with this band. That said great for those that want it and this should open up more ultimates across the board.

Super7 has done several Reaction figures before, I don't know what other merch there is though.

The others have been for Papa 1 and 3 from what I remember, not Papa 1. Each one basically represents a different era of the band.

Can anybody recommend some songs from these guys. They seem to be popular but I've never really heard of them.

umm...

anywho, I think the reason a lot of people don't like this band is:

a) their music doesn't match the image at all. It's nothing more than heavy-ish pop.(I like some of the stuff I've heard)

b) not sure which iteration of "papa" it was, but isn't there a controversy with one of them stealing royalties from the rest of the band by claiming to have written all the songs himself or some such nonsense?

Square Hammer, Ritual, Year Zero, Monstrous Clock.

Yeah they definitely aren't the death metal hardcore stuff you might expect from the look, but I dig the music. All the Papa Emeritus looks are pretty cool as well.

Not sure, they're just characters. Papa I-III are all actually still the same person, played by Tobias Forge.

I'd basically heard that the main guy is the only constant/write and the rest of the people are faceless people that go in and out of the band.

So far we have ReAction figures of Papa 2 and 3. This is the first-ever figure of Papa I.

That case was dismissed. I followed it super closely and even read all the (translated) court documents. It basically boiled down to sour grapes.

I've never understood the obsession either...but my wife is gonna be over the moon for this.

I took my wife to see Ghost for her birthday a couple of years ago and knowing almost nothing about them going in,, came away pretty impressed with the show. They had a good stage presentation, and they were really sharp and crisp. I'm still not really a fan, but I came away actually liking a few of the songs I heard, and if anyone has a chance to see them live, I certainly wouldn't discourage them from doing so.

Square Hammer, Rats, and Year Zero are some of their more well known songs. Square Hammer in particular sounds a lot like it could have been a Blue Oyster Cult song, and is pretty catchy.

They have a couple of really good covers as well. Their cover of the Eurythmics "Missionary Man" and Imperiet's "Bibel" (aka Bible) are absolutely brilliant. I actually prefer their version of "Bible" over the original.

Cirice and He Is are good too. He Is is different from their other music since it's a parody of 70s folk/lite Christian rock. I love the video with Papa III dressed as conman preacher in a white suit and Jim Jones sunglasses. Actually, I wouldn't mind a figure of him in that look.

I love their cover of its a sin. Felt very much a great tribute and i too preferred their version to the original, which i loved as a kid.

which would lead to the squabble.

ahh, this is where I was confused by joe's comment. no dash.

That case was dismissed. I followed it super closely and even read all the (translated) court documents. It basically boiled down to sour grapes.
okay. no idea. I knew there was an issue, but this wouldn't be the first case of royalty shenanigans.(see every successful musician ever)

thanks for the info.

This is difficult for me, and I get asked for recommendations a lot since I'm a big fan of the band and I've even had some business with them in the past.

The truth is, all four of their albums are pretty distinct, and some people even hate some albums while loving others. For example, I am in love with their earlier work, which is darker, heavier, and more evil, but I'm not such a huge fan of their newer work, which is more radio-friendly, lighter, more ballad-esque. Bottom line is, they only have four albums, so if you have an afternoon you could figure out for yourself whether or not you dig the band. Additionally, if you were listening to a particular album and you don't dig the sound, you can skip to the next album and get something different from the same band.

I know that's a bad answer and not what you were looking for lmao. If you'd rather not do all that, a good "sampler platter" from each phase of the band may serve you:

I: Ritual, Stand By Him
II: Year Zero, Monstrance Clock
III: Cirice, Deus in Absentia
III.5: Square Hammer
IV: Rats, Witch Image
IV.5: Kiss the Go-Goat

They are Satanists in the same way KISS are a bunch of killer space men. They are characters in a pretend evil church band. Well, less so these days. They've moved away from that image since finding success.

Thank you guys I appreciate the useful information on this thread. This was a band I was peripherally aware of but now that I had some context I knew where to start. So far I've listened to Square Hammer and the It's A Sin cover and it was pretty good. Not over the moon or anything but I have something else to listen to now.
