While there is a lot of things out there that are enticing, especially the Iron Man line, I have come to a crossroads.
Toys are no longer giving me the joy that they used to, and my money could probably be spent on better things. I've been debating on getting out of figures for awhile, but it seems like something would always pull me back in. Now, with the Pursuit of Cobra Beachhead likely not coming out for some time and the fact that now that I have Ultron, I have pretty much every MU character I could want, there's not a lot pulling me in. I don't think I'm growing out of figures, in fact I still intend to collect Gundams, yet I will limiting myself to only Gundams if I stop collecting everything else. The real reason I'm posting this is because I can't decide if I want to box up my Joes and such or if I should sell them. There would be plenty to keep, but I don't know if, say, the GI Joes Greenshirts from that boxed set are something I'm really going to regret getting rid of. Also, I have a lot of random Marvel stuff and LOTR I've collected over time... I just really want to make room so I don't have to look at the stuff anymore. Thoughts? |

I know how you feel. I started going through some stuff to sell recently, but I don't necessarily want to get rid of it. I just want the apartment to look less cluttered. Then I made a bigger mess going through things. If you need/want to make room, I think it's safe to get rid of them. And if you change your mind later, well then you have something to collect again! lol.

I had quit really collecting years ago. Soon afterwards I sold off almost everything I had. The only things I bought then were the McFarlane Movie Maniacs and the occasional movie-based figure from NECA.
When 25th GI Joes came out that all changed. I really got back into them and ate up everything I could find. And then Marvel Universe came out and I had to have those as well. It's funny how I had completely kicked the habit only to get caught back up in it again. To be perfectly honest, I don't really regret selling off my collection from before. I had gotten over all my toys at the time and the money I got from selling them came in handy. If you do decide to stop, I would suggest you consider keeping at least a few things that you especially enjoy more than others. Plus, like Evantainment mentioned above, you can re-collect in the future if you ever have the desire to do so . |

Thanks for the comments, guys. Yeah, I'll keep certain things. For instance, my Snake-Eyes collection is going nowhere. There's just a lot of stuff that I have that brings back bad memories of when I had bought them, and especially with GI Joes, I barely appreciate any of it anymore anyway because there is so much there.
I think you're right. I won't regret getting rid of a lot of it. I'm progressing in my life, I think I'll be happier with whatever I'm doing right now. |

I have a crapload of toys. A CRAPLOAD. But I still don't know if I consider myself a collector. I don't just collect for collecting's sake. I just buy what I like. I may sell a lot of stuff if I lose interest in it, but there will always be, at the very least, something I'll be interested in.

Money isn't much of an issue, but I would love to just take a long break from buying Joes and now that MU exists, MU. Haha, it's only been what, like almost a year and I'm already done with the line? P I'd keep buying Gundam stuff simply because I have so much attachment to the franchise. Joes, I have barely any attachment anymore and MU will always live on in comics for me. |

i collect a lot of things, and there are things that I really have not regretted buying them but nevertheless i know how you feel, this happen to me,i leave this for a while, until the appearance of these figures of MU,im back again, you need a breake of this ,but collection is collection I would recommend you not sell anything,or sell the things that really are hindrance in the collection,i did it that and i feel better now,I have a whole room of my favorite things(comics, video games,my guitars,my favorite figures after which i sold the things that were of more, etc)
you can go back when some thing make you feel that you where lost now. a breake works we are with you friend, just think it,take you time. |

I'm gonna have to agree with most of the other people here.
There is a certain sentimental value that each toy has with you but the Toy industry isn't going anywhere and maybe nothing excites you now because you need something new to come along and catch your eye again. Remember, toys from here on out can only get better. GI Joe 25th and MU have taught us that I think by coming out with a bigger, better action figure. |

I tend to agree with your initial sentiments.
In this day and age money can be better spent on other things, or even saved. The 'collector' in me though, or rather the inner child in me, won't give it up. BUT I'm a finicky collector. I'm mostly only Imports, and even then only particular ones like the motion revive series kamen riders or the various sentai model kits, which is what led me to cobra collecting as I needed a 'terrorist' group to amalgamate shocker to for them. Snake eyes just followed cause of the movie hype, and then resolute. The accel suits cause I'm a powered armor fan ( hence my BGC collection though I hate the bikes and really just wanted the knight sabers), and the scarlet reactive suits just cried out for kit bashes to start building my own homebrewed hero armored team. Generally I only stick to certain things. MU team building. (Just the basics, Fan 4, Modern X-Force, a few X-Men, the avengers, suburbia heroes like darkhawk, Spidey, Black Cat, Daredevil, & nova, and 2 bad guy teams, revised masters of evil, & Dark Avengers, to pass on to my kids someday, whenever I finally have kids. xD) Transformers Classics/Universe - Basicly only who was in seasons 1-3, with a special addition for drift if he gets made since I'm digging the IDW usage. But I also expanded this to animated, and Certain home planet alt mode figures and WWI. Bayverse - rethinking this one, as much as I like the few I have, it just seems weird to have them and not a complete good guys side... But I've yet to make any choices on these, cept on that I'm not buying anymore except for the 3rd bike for my fembots, and Brawn for a place holder in classics... (And to give the pistols to animated Arcee) DCIH - Mostly only the green lantern ones, though I have expanded for the basic teen titans, and flash family. Ben 10 - 10 aliens and done, but I've only bought 6 so far that I liked, the other 4 of AF so far I may skip, and wait for evolutions, to get. Sentai Model Kits - Only certain ones, which I almost have all of so I'm pretty much done here until they make a dragon caeser one. Minimates - Only getting X-Force in minimates, Ironman, Nova, Armored DD, and Darkhawk if he's ever made. Icons - Indy from Indiana Jones in joe scale, hellboy, Microman Movie style Casshern, Dead or Alive, BGC and that's about it really. Megaman/Rockman and Darkstalkers - I grew up on these two franchises, so I have a soft spot for them. Thankfully I don't import rockman kits anymore, and no domestic maker has made decent ones that I'd buy in the right scale. But Megaman Zero and the ZX armors could easily drag me back to this. As would a darkstalkers joe scale line. Overall, I keep my collecting so simplified and directed even if scattered that I can keep cost and space down without worries, it also helps maximize value when I do decide to sell them since usually my picks are the same as everyone else's high demanded figures. On a side note: I'm trying to unload everything I had prior to this new distinction on careful collecting. From vintage MOTU, Transformers, joes and everything else (DAMN YOU TOY BIZ!) and even the oodles and oodles of comics I wasted money on over the years instead of getting the TPBS. Condensing is always good though. Just stick to what you like, but don't go overboard. Like IM2, I'm really only getting a Joe Scale movie IM, warmachine, and dynamo. Maybe others, but I'm debating on selling the armory I've built so what's the point in more IM armors without it? Basicly, my collecting rule now is, only certain things, and if can be, stick to joe scale, cept for transformers cause there's no choice there. But that's just how I roll since I lean on wanting everything in scale to each other marginally, and try to avoid bigger unless it suits the character in question. Thanks to this, I was able to keep my 2009 toy spending down to roughly around 500 total for the year. About 260 of that was MU, the rest was transformers animated except 90 of it was TF movie toys. Another new habit I've picked up, is self sustaining my toy habits with toy sales. The old toys I sell usually go towards new ones. This helps keep the toy habit from digging too deep into my wallet, while still keeping a nice influx or rotation on one shelf to keep things fresh besides the mainstay shelves like TF, MU, and Kamen Riders. All collectors go through a "burnout" phase at one time or another. In some cases, such as myself, it happens more than once.
The first time I grew out of toys was right around high school (end of G2 and before BW) and it continued into college (until RID was released). The second time was much later (late 20's), and it was preceded by the epiphany "Why the hell did I buy that?" when I had to pack up a bunch of stuff to move into a new apartment with my then-girlfriend (now wife). Back then, I used to collect any number of toy lines and licensed miscellaneous crap (comics, playing cards/CCG/TTG, kid's meal toys, etc.), but now I've limited it to these toy lines: Transformers, G.I.Joe (only certain characters now) and Marvel Universe. My interests haven't changed, just my collecting habits. Do I regret selling a lot of my older toys? In some cases, sure. But I'm actively buying those back even though it will probably take me a few more years to do it. There are others that I absolutely do not regret selling and wish I had never bought them in the first place. Not because they were bad toys, just that they were only a passing interest or a toy that someone talked me into getting (by review, forum posts, videos etc). Basically, I've gone from the impulse-buying toy hoarder to a finicky collector like Snow mentioned. Quote:
That's probably the easiest way to condense your collection when you're not sure if you want to keep something or not. In the end though, it's all up to you.

I cannot tell you guys how many times in my 20 years of collecting I quit the hobby and sold 90% of my stuff, only to see something new on the pegs that brings me right back into it full force. For example, THE DARK KNIGHT MOVIE MASTERS led into DCUC which led into a few vintage Super Powers figures, and then Megos.

I'll probably pick up the Beachhead whenever I see it, but that's still a pretty long wait.
I appreciate all the comments guys, especially the time Snow and Treble took to type out theirs. It's all very helpful advice/thoughts that is definitely giving me more to think about. I'll let you know how it goes, and you'll likely see me on the buy/sell forums soon. |

i guess im kind of lucky and unfortunate at the same time, i only really collected Marvel Legends and got into it late, so besides getting a deal here and there on ebay theres not much out there left to get or to look forward to. Then came DC Universe....yeah the empty peg line, good luck finding them hah. lately i find myself buying some things i wouldnt normally tho, ive gotten ALITTLE into Star wars but thatll be a bare minimum, same with GIJoes, only picked up a couple since they were $5. Marvel Universe? forget it, theyre too exspenisve (why more than SW or GIJ?) and ive got too many Legends to start another line of same characters. so i guess im saying just keep what you like for sure, maybe get rid of some stuff you could care less about since you dont consider yourself a completist, but there will always be things you shouldnt sell because itll be a pain in the a$$ to get back once you realise you still want it!

What's funny though is even after selling stuff I thought I wanted to keep made me realize how much I really was not attached to it. Bottom line is if you feel it does not give you enjoyment anymore it's probably time to go. |

I've really thinned out my collection, and now buy only what I like.

I've really limited my self over the last few years. Buying what I think looks really cool. It's mainly Transformers, which makes it easier. But never be afraid to take break from collecting. I've done it, and I know a lot of people who have as well. Sometimes you realize you're done, sometimes you realize you just need to really cut back.

Well, some spam bot preaching about marijuana revived this thread, which I had completely forgotten about, so I think I'll update ya'll. Not that anyone probably cares at this point!
Well, I haven't stopped collecting, although I have definitely slowed down. The only thing I collect frequently anymore is Glyos, although I did pick up most of the Pursuit of Cobra line, and a bit of Retaliation(mainly for that 3-pack Beachhead). I also grab legos once in awhile, but I think my buying is less about collecting and more about grabbing a de-stresser every so often. I can't quit toys, and I've had a girlfriend for the last 2 1/2 years who is very supportive of the hobby, so it's been good times in toy land for me. I still can't believe I made this thread, ha. |

I have spent the last year or so going threw boxes and selling off almost every toy I got in the 90's. I have kept some stuff from the Palisades company and ReSaurus, man they made some great stuff for the time, but most things have went. I used to be the horde collector, always buying 2 or 3 of something, the whole one to keep one to open mentality, but I outgrew it and only keep stuff boxed if it is special or a con exclusive with the exception of the MOTU Classics line which I have the entire line in package. Most everything else I open and display. I have a huge Marvel legends and DC Classics collection and almost all of the TF Classics/Generations displayed. My real weakness is NECA as a whole. I used to get McFarlane stuff when they made movie figures and NECA took that over from them. I have a hard time passing on a lot of the classic stuff they make, like the Aliens, Predators, Rambo, and a lot of the movie figures over the years because they look so good. I have tried to cut back on stuff (although as much as I post on toyark you wound not know) over the years a lot. I have given up the complete line mentality in favor of getting only what I really enjoy for the most part.

I've run out of room and currently being out of work selling off some stuff is needed. I mostly am only buying new MU if any shows up and then concentrating on imports like figuarts and Robot Damashii. I don't have space for everything so I have to take a hard look my collections and trim some stuff, especially if it has been in the closet for over a year.

I definitely agree with your last point, and meant to get at this in my post but forgot. If I buy something, I go into it making sure I'm going to enjoy the figure for awhile, instead of the impulse buys where I end up just having a statue lying around. If I can enjoy it for more than two days, it was money well spent. I'm doing pretty good on that logic. And Iceman, I'm finally about to move out of my parent's place, which means I'm gonna have to get rid of a TON of stuff myself. It's sad, but then again, a lot of that stuff is just a thing lying around like I mentioned before. |

I always like to think that when I sell something it's going to a good home where someone else can enjoy. That and the money/space that gets freed up takes the sting away from selling something I really like. I think a good collection is somewhat static and stuff is always coming and going.

I've been down the road of stopping and selling off my collection. I was, for a long time, a Transformers only collector. As Hasbro began sliding into more super kid oriented and overpriced stuff. I sold off 90% of my Transformers collection. I used the cash to pay down some school loans, buy a new TV and it paid for a vacation a few years ago. Before I did it though, I took a step back and stopped for awhile, just to make sure I really wanted to sell stuff off. For me, it wound up being a good call.
