Have to say, was really surprised how well these turned out. Black Manta especially. Multiverse has my attention in full now.

Those last 2 shots in the 1st post are freaking masterpieces. Black Manta is a really nice looking figure.

It's a pity Orm didn't get the lining of his cape painted to match the cloth one of his basic figure.
I like JL Mera a bit more. This one looks too blue.

I really like that fig for what it is, well done. And I like that it only takes 4 to put it together. However, if anyone did want to troop build him, that can get expensive.

I love Black Manta...he's a rare example of a movie character whose design is actually BETTER than his comic book counterpart. He looks so bad-ass.
Plus, the figure is amazing...I have one, and it's just as great in-hand. Mattel really stepped up their game on the Aquaman wave, and Tony obliterated the world with his photo shoot, as usual. |

Both of my local Walmarts had a ton of these last weekend. I've also seen the exclusive two pack at Target.

yeah- I talked about that at SDCC with the Mattel reps and then did a feed-back poll (and got a $50 target giftcard for doing it) They'll make a kiddie version no doubt, but that Multiverse Trench figure should have been single boxed and maybe Black Manta as the BAF- then everyone buys at least one set for Black manta and troop builders get a ton of Trench... I'm going to try and unload the extra Mera/Orm/Arthur at a toyshow for $10-$15ea to off-set the $80 for the 2nd trench figure. heh. (...or just keep a 2nd set for play....)

Black Manta is the only figure in this wave I wanted, I would've hated if Mattel had made him the CnC. I agree that the Trench warrior as the CnC is awkward since it's an army builder but Manta definitely should be a single.

I'd kind of like to get Mera (or at least see her in person), but I've got the JL one and I feel a bit burned after I pre-ordered that only to see it for at one point $4.97, so part of me just wants to wait it out and see what happens.
There are some things that I like about the Aquaman version, but at the same time I feel like the itch has also been scratched the by the JL version so it would be more like double dipping then getting two different figures, especially with the accessory re-use, even if the base figures are so different. |

I had this Aquaman figure last night for a couple hours. Mattel still lags in sculpt but this figure actually looked pretty cool so I bought it. Would have kept it if not for the leg joints being all loose and wonky. I was really impressed that the figure had ankle pivot (I didn't even know Mattel knew how to make that(, so I think Mattel is finally getting the memo to keep up with the times. But sadly it was not enough to keep me from returning this figure to Walmart last night. Maybe someday you'll produce a quality figure Mattel. (and maybe someday you'll rehire the Four Horsemen)

that's the point- more people probabl;y want Black manta than the trench... win/win for Mattel if they had gone that route. And being only a 4 figure CnC, (as opposed to 6) I think that would have driven a lot more sales.

If that had been Mattel's route I would have just skipped the entire wave (and complained about it online). Making a desired figure the CnC when their size doesn't justify it is just a huge dick move, when Hasbro made Mantis the BAF for GotG2 wave 2 I saw nobody praising that as a smart marketing decision. I still stand by my position that the entire BAF/CnC gimmick should be done away with and replaced with deluxe releases for those larger characters that wouldn't fit in a regular box. The main results I see from the BAF/CnC approach are in-store thefts, the surge of undesired figures loose on eBay, and scalpers selling complete BAF/CnCs for like three times what they're worth.

picked up the Gladiator 2-pack of arthur and orm. The arthur is basically a Justice League figure with a new head forearms/lower legs- not the new style Multiverse. Orm is great as a genric troop to stand behind the single carded Orm (OceanMaster figure) I'll grab another of these but not until it goes on clearance. I also recommend picking up the $10 "kids line" Black Manta if you want a much improved sword and wrist blade over the Multiverse version. The sword is larger and much more solid with silver detail. the wrist blade is also longer and stronger- but this piece I had to slice off each figure and glue into place

Man, I'm really pulling for Mattel. This wave shows real ambition. Ambition! Mattel! I wish Manta's eyes had a better effect, but that's relatively minor compared to the general impression.
