i have had this toy and others since childhood and wondered what exactly they are called, is it a type of g.i joe or corps and if so what type

If it's a Joe, it should have a Hasbro copyright molded or stamped on the thigh somewhere. Check the figure for any kind of markings for year and manufacturer, as that will give us a way to narrow down the search.
