Did anyone get this game? How is it so far? Is it a renter or a buyer?

Do not buy this game! do not buy this game, DO NOT buy this game!!!
If you really want to try it, rent it. I bought it because I am a Marvel fan, but its really not worth the money. I wrote a brief review here. |

Definitely a rental. I Redbox'd it yesterday and finished it. The graphics are shite. Where's the dynamic lighting? Why doesn't anyone else cast a shadow? Do they KNOW games like Gears of War and Uncharted 3 exist? The gameplay has no weight to it, no visceral feel. You get new powers as you progress, but mostly you're just hitting X or Y over and over anytime you encounter some enemies. Which is CONSTANTLY. It's pretty much all you do, (when you're not listening to Gambit voiced in a Jamaican accent. Yeah, you read that right.) But you keep doing it because you earn XP (Think Dynasty Warriors). And look out for the LIMP cut scenes! X-Men: Destiny also clocks in at a paltry six hours. Was it wrong of me to expect more from a game with an RPG ish system? The game is written by Mike Carey, but what does that even mean? (Mayhaps he should have UNWRITTEN it. Geddit?) Couple of cool things, like mixing and matching your X-Gene powers, fighting a few HUNDRED enemies with your chosen faction while the end credits roll and, wait for it... A new game+ feature, but I'd say a 5, maybe 6 out of 10. Totally worth a rental if you're curious, but asking sixty dollars for a sub-par, unfinished game with a Jamaican Gambit is an insult.
Yeah, guests! Read that shit! Last edited by Dylan in Oregon; 09-28-2011 at 05:23 PM.. Reason: saw some guests on. |

Rent. Don't buy. Not worth it.
I also rented this From Redbox. Completed the game within a few hours. There really isn't enough game variety. Plus the story is pretty sub par. |

what sort of replay value is there? like for Marvel Ultimate Alliance I like taking different combos of teams through the same levels so it is really fun for me but what about on this game? and is it only one player? if so that sucks cus for me half the fun is playing with friends that, you know, are in the same room with you

Only replay value is if you want to try the other two characters you didn't pick along with the other two power sets.
Otherwise don't waste your money on this game and wait for something better i.e. Batman Arkham City. |

I love threads like this, it keeps the committed Marvel/DC lovers from overspending on useless crap. Sure, the game might warrant a cheap rental, but why waste hard earned money when you don't have to? One $60 video game = a slew of sweet action figures.

Damn, sucks to hear that this game isn't that good. I thought it had potential. Anyone played the new Spider-Man game?

Oh ok. Yeah It's really disappointing that it seems like this game is is getting bad reviews. I mean I never had high hopes for this game. But I hope Spider-Man will be good. I liked shatter dimensions a lot

DCU Online is becoming FTP some time in October, I think. There are 3 levels of play, Free, Premium, Legendary. If you have spent any cash on SOE you have life of Premium. If you are a life time membership user you get life Legenday. You can get Legendary if you pay 15 bucks a month for extra things that are not essential to complete the game, just some extas.

Is X-men Destiny worth a Redbox 2 dollar rental, yes, Is it worth spending 60 bucks to buy the game, HELL NO! It also got stuck twice while playing it. If I had paid Full Price for this Game, I would be pissed. Thank You Redbox!

Marvel Games worry me. I wish they'd realize if they just go the Ultimate Spider-man game route or similiar to edge of time/shattered dimensions. They could make a killing.
Think about it. A full sand box world game, you use whatever marvel character you want with their abilities, and you have transition points in key points of the city to allow other areas like new cities, new worlds, new universes. Stuff like reed richards lab, Hank Pym's infinite mansion, X-Mansion or utopia junction spot to shi'ar space. Or whatever else that you can use as a transition point to a side area that wouldn't make sense in the full city. Heck even just an airport or boat dock. That's the kind of marvel game I want. I want a game where I can play as spider-man and webswing, or play as x-23 and nosedive off a building swing off the flag pole and enter a sky scraper window just to take out the target and then go out the next window into the city to find my path back to the exit point to complete the objective. Heck, even just play as a random custom hero/mutant that gets lost in the city and have to hail a taxi since I'm lost on where the x-mansion is, or if I do know where it is, I can just pull a deadpool and steal a car. Each character would need their attributes too for environment interaction. Like wolverine/daken/x-23 able to climb walls using their claws. Cyclops optic blasts being able to level full area blocks or forests, and then slightly sped up real time of the rebuilding of the environment. That building that was leveled by scott? You come back the next in game day and it might be a crater, the following in game day it's a construction site, and so on until it's a building again. Heck that route the environment is ever changing based on your actions too, as well as how people react to you. This is the kind of marvel, or really any kind of sand box game I'd want. Something where I can freely choose how to do an objective, or escape a scenario. If I'm in said collapsing building? How I choose to escape could also play a huge factor. Do I take the elevator shaft? Stair case? Jump out the building if it's tipping into the next, and so on. Dynamic environments, dynamic transitions, and dynamic real time "Oh crap what do I do" moments. An engine like that would take time, care, and money though. The only great thing about it is once completed you can keep using it with new landscapes, or in marvel's case, same landscapes only different characters(X-Men game, Spider-man game, Avengers Game etc). Heck, just sell one, call it Marvel Universe, then DLC expansion the heck out of that mug with new transition areas like the savage land, reed's lab devices to new worlds/universes, cosmic marvel space areas and missions with transition space port or heroes like Darkhawk or nova, or project pegasus. Every bit of DLC would feel like a new game in and of itself with how it changes how you play the game or who you play as, or the areas you could reach and foes you'd face (dinosaurs in the savage land, fear itself sin armies, etc). I guess I'm just a dreamer though. Because that'll never happen no matter how much money it could make. So yeah, I completely passed on X-Men Destiny. It had an interesting concept, but feels too limited in scope. I will give them credit for trying, but the entire engine just doesn't feel right or comfortable to the kind of marvel game that makes me feel like I am the hero/villian or my custom creation. I do like that it feels like a big step forward over the ultimate alliance series, but it still has that sort of linear level feel to it and hindrance that bugs me. For a potential future ultimate alliance, I'd love to see this engine used. The no co-op sucks though, and the new competitive play also sucks. It would have been sweet to team-up with a friend, or play an opposite side of the story as a friend and have it intermingle, but oh well. Maybe the sequel. Seems like a fun marvel game in its own right, but as a game by itself without the marvel license, it feels like something that should be 20 bucks or under. For a game that has as such grand visions as this, it doesn't really feel like they accomplished the intended goal, and feels more like X-Men Legends 3. Again though, this is only from watching videos of playthroughs of the game. It just doesn't feel like the kind of marvel game I've grown accustomed too, but does feel like the kind of marvel handheld game I'd play to death. Console marvel games I've been spoiled by the likes of Spider-man 3, and Ultimate spider-man, crackdown, prototype, and infamous. Handheld games though? That's where I play the heck out of ultimate alliance and other more linear/mundane marvel games that I need a quick I want to play as so and so fix. Wish they made the Ironman games like that. The reviews were so bad I didn't even bother playing Ironman 1 or 2.
