Apparently LEGO sales increased by 25% in 2012 partially in thanks to the new line aimed at girls: LEGO Friends. This article points out that while LEGO Star Wars and LEGO Ninjago are both strong sellers, that LEGO Friends did far better than expected, and there were challenges keeping up with demand.
LEGO has also recently revealed that in 2013 they will introduce smaller product boxes that are more environmentally friendly in attempts to reduce their carbon footprint. LEGO claims that the smaller box sizes will lower the CO2 impact from their packaging alone by about 10%. Smaller boxes will also yield more retail space opening up on shelves as well, so there will definitely be some visible changes coming to your local LEGO aisle.
And finally we would like to give 10 points to Gryffindor, because the sorting hat always puts the best, the brightest, and the over-achievers in that house. And over-achieving doesn’t even begin to describe the awesome sight of Alice Finch‘s incredible LEGO Hogwarts creation that puts the official LEGO release to shame. The 400,000 brick behemoth took home the “People’s Choice” and “Best in Show” awards from BrickCon 2012, which I am told is a rare feat in and of itself.
