Time for another Random Photo Shoot! Today we have Square Enix’s Play Arts Kai Man of Steel Zod. This is a figure I’ve been waiting for since it was first shown off in promo pics earlier this year. It stands around 9.5 inches tall, towering over the DCUC and DCC figures that fill most of my DC shelves. The paint applications are top notch, and sculpting is phenomenal. However, there are some issues worth noting. I generally tend not to get into negatives of the figures I shoot, but I think these are worth some time.
First – this is my second one. When I first got it about a month ago, after taking it out of the package, I attempted to move the arm, and it immediately snapped off at the peg. I was attempting to move it in a direction it was meant to go, but because it was so tight and unforgiving, snap. Luckily, site sponsor Big Bad Toy Store was willing to take the return with no questions asked, so I thank them for that (they did not provide this for review, I purchased it straight out from them). There are tons of discussion about Square’s figures being fragile and breaking like this, but I hadn’t experienced it myself so quickly until now. In the past, I’ve had my Play Arts Cloud snap at the leg, and GoW Kratos snap at the wrist, but it was much after the purchase time, and I attributed it to my own heavy handling of it. This however, was right out of the box, and without an unreasonable amount of pressure. Square, if you read this, your figures look amazing, but you need to get this under control.
Second – and this is a bit nitpicky – the coloring on the figure is a bit different than I was expecting from the promotional shots. Square chose a lightly metallic paint for the armored parts, and it is not black. I’d say it’s more of a dark bronze. On quick glance, it does give off a “metallic black” feel, but when looking at it steady, up close, you really notice the bronze. Not sure if that is truly movie accurate or not, but in my mind, Zod wears black, pitch black. I think a metallic charcoal or silver highlights could have achieved the look a bit better.
That being said, overall it is still a solid figure. He has a presence on the shelf, and the articulation is great. So read on for over 35 high resolution HD images of Play Arts Kai MoS Zod!
