Check out the Toyark gallery for the Super 7 and Funko Alien ReAction Figures. These 3.75″ retro figures were created from the original, unproduced, 1979 Kenner prototype Alien figures. They include Ripley, Kane, Dallas, Ash and, of course, the Alien. Being retro figures, and from 1979, they feature sculpting and articulation in line with the original Star Wars figures. While that doesn’t put them on the same level as modern day figures, they definitely have an appeal to fans and collectors.
Read on to check out a quick review and 130 photos of the figures.
Alien ReAction Figures Review
The figures come packaged on classic style cardbacks. If you ordered the figures during the original Super 7 offering, you received them with blue cars. When Funko came aboard to broaden the offering, their versions featured black cards. For this gallery, we have the Funko versions on the black card backs. Sadly, the bubbles are glued to the cards, meaning you either have to damage the card back or the bubble to remove the figures. For a line aimed squarely at collectors, that’s a bit of a disappointment. On the plus side, the cards feature fantastic graphics and a design that mimics the Star Wars vintage lines.
The figures each feature the standard five points of articulations…Neck, shoulders and hips. The sculpting is joyfully retro. The toys could easily stand with classic Star Wars figures and no one would would even notice. Ripley and Dallas are featured in their blue flight suits. Ash comes in his baby blue outfit and Kane comes decked out in a full Nostromo space suit. Dallas, Ripley and Ash are a bit plain. Kane and the alien steal the show here with surprisingly detailed sculpts. The Nostromo suit looks fantastic at the 3.75″ size and features a removable helmet. The Alien has a clear plastic piece on the head. It can be removed to reveal a sliding mechanism to mimic the snapping jaw. Also, the tail of the Alien figure can rotate at the connection point.
When announced the figures definitely had their detractors from collectors who demand nothing but highly articulated figures. While I definitely appreciate those highly articulated designs, I grew up on figures of this nature. The nostalgia factor combined with the fact that this line saved figures that would have been lost to history make them a joy to own. Super 7 did a fantastic job of ensuring accurate sculpts from the original protos. And having Funko step in to make these more widely available was an even bigger win. If you’re a fan of Alien and retro style figures these are must own Figures. If the retro styling is off-putting, then keep an eye out for what NECA has in store for the Alien 35th Anniversary. I look forward to seeing what Funko is going to do with the ReAction line in the future.
