DC Collectibles Scribblenauts Unmasked Interview and Gallery

By Tony_Bacala on February 3, 2014 at 10:00 am under DC Toy News, Random Photo Shoot

DC Collectibles was kind enough to invite The Toyark staff to participate in a quick phone interview about the recently released Scribblenauts Unmasked: A DC Comics Adventure mini-figures. We were able to speak with Kevin Kiniry (VP, Creative Services) and Jim Fletcher (Design Director, Creative Services) about the line, what their design process was, and where the future may go. They also sent us a couple figures to check out! Read on to check the interview and some high resolution images of Bizarro and Green Lantern Max!

Author’s note: Phone interviews are not my modus operandi here, so everything below attributed to DC Collectibles reps is paraphrased. I took notes, but did not record the call. I’d like to say they were both very friendly and forthcoming; genuinely excited for the line and to be talking about it.

TA: When Scribblenauts Unmasked: A DC Comics Adventure game happened, was the plan always to create toys?

DCC: Game came first, but when we saw the depth and effort being put into it we got excited.

TA: With over 2000 DC characters in the game, can we hope to see even more DC Collectibles Scribblenauts figures in the future?

DCC: The price point does allow for the line to go that deep, it all depends on how well they sell. It will be ongoing until done (2000 characters) if it sells. Two waves are planned, and there is casual background being done on future waves already.

TA: Any plans for mini dios or vehicles?

DCC: Vehicles and more. If the blind box is successful we will look into bigger stuff starting at the end of the year.

TA: Are there plans for any multi-packs or non-blind box offerings?

DCC: Blind box method for now. If the secondary market picks up and the line is multiple waves deep, might do a catch up box-set or something similar. Con Exclusives are also a possiblity.

TA: Scribblenauts features a wonderfully stylized art style. What was the biggest challenge in translating that look into a physical figure?

DCC: Lots of experimenting, it took a lot of work to get the flat look in 3d form. But this is what DC Collectibles does – try to capture the look of various media in product form. The Scribblenauts developers helped work some of the final look out, and they are super excited about the figures now that they are done.

TA: Any plans for regular scribblenauts mini figs (Maxwell, Lily regular, previous games)?

DCC: Just Max, and just in DC costumes.

TA: Anything else you’d like to tell the fans?

DCC: Run to Gamestop or your local comic shop and beg for these things!

The Toyark would like to thank DC Collectibles, Kevin Kiniry and Jim Fletcher for taking the time to speak with us. Check out pics of the little guys below and head on out to grab some for yourselves today!
