Funko Legacy Game of Thrones Wave 1 Photo Shoot

Funko jumped into the 6/7 Inch action figure game hard with a rapid fire announcement and release of Game of Thrones Legacy Collection Wave 1 this month. Right before Toy Fair, they dropped at Barnes and Noble stores first, with a wide release at retailers to come. Wave 1 consists of Jon Snow, Ned Stark, Daenerys Targaryen, White Walker, The Hound and Tyrion Lannister. Each has a varying range of motion and show accurate accessories. Rapid Fire Review

Sculpt – great. Not Hot Toys level of facial accuracy or anything, but these figures aren’t meant to achieve that. They are a solid artistic representations of the characters, taking cues from the actors on the show. The outfits are top notch, grabbing fine show accurate details. No soft goods – all capes, fur and leather – molded plastic. Which in my opinion is fine.

Paint – Also top notch. Multiple colors and techniques, dry brushing and washing. It really brings out the details present in the molds. Even Jon Snow who wears all black has varying shades of dark grey, black, and blue to add depth. The Hound’s armor paint is also very well done, giving off a metallic tone without going shiny.

Articulation – Umm. There are issues. They were designed on paper well. Ball joint heads will full range, shoulders, elbows, wrist swivel and joint, some with chest flex, ball jointed hips, thigh swivels, double jointed knees, ankle rockers. Sounds great. However, in the execution of this first wave, there were obviously some production line issues. We had several of the figures snap at the joints during standard careful attempts at movement, along with less severe sheath spliting and detaching. I’ve had Play Arts Kai breakage issues in the past, and this reminds me of that. Even knowing it may happen, attempting to move a joint in a way it should, gently, could lead to a snap. I am not sure if this is prevalent of the whole run, but there are folks online mentioning the same thing. I really hope they address these issues in future waves. If the fragility issue gets addressed, then these are awesome articulation wise.

Overall – I still think these are a buy if you are a Game of Thrones fan. I say this because I really ran the figures through the posing ringer for the shoot. If these are adult collectibles, designed to be slightly posed and dropped on a tv stand, desk, shelf – they “should” be fine. They do not have the constant playability of Marvel Legends figures though. So as “poseable statues”, they are on point and worth it. As Funko refines the Legacy Collection and hopefully addresses these issues, you’re gonna need these wave 1 guys to be complete. So, from that angle, still a grab. Just be gentle when you get them :).
