Toyark Gallery and Review for Creature from the Black Lagoon Select

After Diamond Select Toys sent along their Monster Hunter Van Helsing Select Action Figure, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on another figure from the line. This past weekend I was able to pick up the Creature from the Black Lagoon Select Action Figure. The figure is part of their Universal Monsters Select series. It’s available at Toys “R” Us and comic/specialty shops. The comic shop version (as seen in this review) includes a more detailed figure base. The 7″ scale figure features over 16 points of articulation.

Overall
After searching for almost 2 weeks, I was finally able to track down a comic shop that had the Creature from the Black Lagoon Select Figure in stock. It’s one of my personal favorite classic monsters, and this figure looked like a spot on representation. The figure, like the Van Helsing, is sculpted by Jean St. Jean and features plenty of articulation. The included display base depicts a sea bottom scene, with a rock formation, skeleton and swimming fish. It sells for about $25 in stores.

Now that I have it in person, I can say for sure that it may be the best figure of the series. The sculpted details are great. Great attention was paid to the finer details such as the webbed hands, the gills and more. The paint apps add some depth, with a nice darker wash over the figure. The arms and legs benefit the most from the sculpted articulation. With movement at the shoulders, elbows and wrist, you can get some great swimming style poses. The thorax swivels in two spots and the hips can rotate front to back or swing out for more dynamic poses. I can’t imagine any additional articulation would benefit the figure, and likely would have sacrificed the details. All of the joints were tight, with nothing feeling like it was going to be flimsy. I ended up shooting a lot of the photos in black and white, as that is how I grew up watching the movie. Like the Van Helsing, I had a feeling the details would really shine in the more contrasty images.

If you at all are a fan of classic horror figures, then I highly recommend this one. I have zero complaints about it. Check out some selected photos below and the rest of the gallery after that.
