DC Entertainment‘s ongoing animated features continued this month with the release of Justice League Throne of Atlantis. It keeps in line with the previous Justice League War and Son of Batman movies (check our Son of Batman galleries here) which are essentially a cartoon version of the New 52 rebooted storylines. All use a modern exaggerated animation style with sleek lines.
DC Collectibles have been releasing figures to match the direct to video offerings, giving us figures for WAR, SoB, and now ToA. They are all in the same artistic style – minimal articulation and streamlined animation sculpting. The Justice League Throne of Atlantis figures are no different. Today we have a gallery for 2 of the 4 from this wave, #11 Aquaman and #12 Mera (yes, the numbering for the animated figures is continuous across movies). Overall, these are well done IF you are looking for simple representations of the characters from the movies. Do not go into these expecting to create an epic pose on your battle shelf. You can slightly move the legs, triggering balance issues even with that. Arms have shoulder, bicep twist, and almost-90-degree elbows. Slight head turns. That’s about it. These guys are going to be posed how they look in the package with some slight variation. Accepting all that, they are well done, featuring flat paint apps which translate the animation into 3D form well when coupled with the elongated designs. Mera has a good stance to her, and does have a grip fist allowing a non-included weapon to be wielded. Aquaman’s colors pop and modernize him while keeping the classic notes in place. So again, if you are a fan of the animated movies and want to rep them in your collection, grab em. When all is said and done this continuous animated line will be a nice little group if you get them all.
