NECA has been teasing that a few surprise items would be dropping without any prior warning. They like to do this from time to time so that fans can actually be surprised once in a while when going into a toy store. Well, this weekend, a new entry into their Retro Mego Style series will begin hitting the West Coast. The figure will be available exclusively at Toys “R” Us Stores. Much like when they dropped the surprise 8-Bit Friday The 13th Retro 8″ Jason Voorhees in stores, we’re getting a matching horror icon. While visiting the NECA studio last week, I was keen to spy this Freddy on display with many other Retro Figures. Randy Falk of NECA wanted us to share the news with fans, and provided us with a sample to photograph and review! Read on to check out over 55 high resolution photos of the NES Freddy Retro Figure.

This new Freddy Krueger release is based on the 1990 video game for the Nintendo Entertainment System. It’s widely considered an awful game, but is notable for being one of the first NES games to feature 4-player compatibility. The figure is also a throwback to their second ever Classic Video Game Appearance figure. Like all retro figures, The NES Freddy comes packaged in a resealable clamshell case. It features all new artwork by Chris Longo. The back shares the story line of the game, as well as a few photos. The bright colors and fun, exaggerated artwork make for a nice sealed display.
The figure features the garish colors of the in-game sprite, much like the 7″ figure that preceded it. This Freddy uses the original Nightmare On Elm Street Freddy head sculpt that was released back in 2013. However, the body is the 2.0 version, which had better articulation. The sweater is a mix of red and tan, the pants are bright red, and the skin and gloves are a muted pink. The exposed skin and the glove both feature a bit of a paint wash to bring out the sculpted details. Of note is the sweater. This appears to be a new design as it’s significantly less bulky than the last two Retro Freddy releases. The yarn seems to be a thinner string, allowing for a tighter fit. All the better as the articulation is exactly as you would expect from their current run of Retro figures. Necks, shoulders, waist, hips, and all the appendages feature plenty of movement. The hat is removable as well, so you can have that sit however you want. The face does feature a bit of paint cracking, but this is a packaged sample and shouldn’t be present on the final production figure.
I’m pretty excited about this release. The classic game repaints are what drew me into collecting NECA items in the first place. So to get an NES figure in one of my new favorite formats is a major plus. The strong homage, bright colors and solid articulation make for a fun figure to handle. Plus, in he world of leakers and factory samples, it’s impressive NECA was able to keep this under wraps until release. Look for it in Toys “R” Us stores over the next few weeks as it makes its way to stores.
