NECA has been on a pretty impressive role with their 1/4 scale figures lately. This has been especially true of their assorted Batman related figures, which has given us fantastic figures such at 1989 Batman, Arkham Knight Batman and the upcoming Batman Begins Batman. Their latest addition to the Batman movie line of figures is The Penguin, portrayed wonderfully by Danny DeVito, from Batman Returns. Overall
The Penguin figure comes packaged in a nice window box, which features excellent art by Geoffry Trapp. Included with the figure are a fabric coat, top hat, cigarette, monocle, half eaten fish and an alternate hand. The monocle, at first, doesn’t look like it will work. However, I realized the peg simply fits snugly by the tear duct, holding it in place perfectly. The cigarette slides between the teeth and cheek and holds quite well also. The coat slips off and on easily, and features a clasp to keep the coat closed. The alternate hand, which holds the included fish, swaps out without any issues. The figure feels a tad hollow and is constructed of mostly hard plastic. The weight distribution really works in your favor, as there are no issues at all standing the figure.
Now that the basic functions are out of the way, let me say this…This figure is superb. It is easily in the top 3 or 4 figures in their 1/4 scale figure line so far. Penguin stands at 15″ tall. The sculpt offers a great likeness of Danny Devito’s take on The Penguin. The “onsie” also has strong attention to detail as well. Seams, holes, cuts, buttons and more are sculpted with great care. The head sculpt nearly crosses the uncanny valley from certain angles. The painting on the eyes, teeth and skin is clean and makes the wrinkles and crevices really pop. Also making the head sculpt work well is the included, heavily mated, hair hanging off the back of the head sculpt. It looks scarily real and even feels dirty and cruddy. The figure features good articulation. The torso rotates and bends at the chest. The shoulders, elbows and wrists all feature a wide range of movement. The legs have decent articulation as well, but the hard plastic nature of the figure prevents the hips from moving much. This keeps the figure stable, though, so it’s a fair trade off. The included accessories are nice additions to the release. An umbrella was initially supposed to be included, but manufacturing issues caused it to be removed. In its place we got the monocle, an extra hand, a half eaten fish, and a cigarette in holder. All work well and give the figure that extra touch to really make it a stand out.
In the end, this is a must own figure for fans who have the room. Just about every aspect of this figure is top notch. It looks fantastic with the 1989 Batman or on its own.
