Terminator: Genisys was a bust at the North American box office. However, it has gained some serious traction overseas. The movie weaves a complicated, and often convoluted, retelling of the events leading up to and during the first Terminator film from 1984. The emergence of a new iteration of Skynet, however, causes major changes to the timeline forcing Sarah Connor, Kyle Reese and a new Guardian T-800 into a battle none of them could have expected (unless they saw the trailer that spoiled everything).
During the film, our heroes come face-to-face with a T-1000, played by the excellent Byung-hun Lee. His appearance, however, is very brief and is never a true threat to the crew. That brief appearance gives way to a surprisingly good figure from NECA. We have the figure for review, courtesy of sponsor Big Bad Toy Store. Read on to check out our full gallery. Overall
Like many people, when the cast was announced, and the very first (non-spoilery) trailer hit, I figured the T-1000 would play a major role in the film. When NECA announced their first wave of figures, and it included the T-1000, that expectation grew. Unfortunately, the T-1000 is barely a foot note in the plot of the film and ultimately is only there to inform an eye-rolling plot device late in the film.
All that said, NECA did a pretty stellar job with the figure. The figure comes packaged in a collector friendly window box (love these). The figure includes two additional right hands, a cut off left arm attachment, a revolver and a spear. It would have been a major plus to be able to attach the spear to his left arm, but would likely have required an additional piece to be included. Also included with the figure is an extra battle damaged chest and head. These swap out very easily, and you can even swap the heads themselves between the two pieces, all while maintaining articulation in the neck and waist.
The articulation, on the whole, is rather good. The neck is still fully movable and the waist twists as well. There’s no ab-crunch, but it’s really not needed here anyway. Arms, wrists, hips, knees, and feet all have solid joints with plenty of poseability. Sculpted detail is fantastic throughout the figure. The likeness is spot on and the uniform looks great. Paint apps are strong throughout, with nice detailing on the badge and throughout the uniform. The skin is painted, rather than being cast in semi-translucent plastic. It works fine here.
The only major drawback to this figure is the fact that the character was never given a chance to do anything on screen. The toy itself is actually quite excellent. It almost borders on being an “Ultimate” figure due to the quality of the sculpt, the excellent likeness of Byung-hun Lee and all the included accessories.
