One of the most sought after Video Game Appearance figures by NECA sees an updated release! Back at San Diego Comic-Con 2015, NECA revealed they would be re-releasing their NES Friday the 13th Jason Voorhees 7″ Scale Figure. The original version, NECA’s first Video Game Appearance figure, was a SDCC2013 Exclusive. The figure would vary from the first release with updated paint apps, new accessories and a box that played the in-game theme when the window flap was opened. Pros
- New paint apps are a nice update
- Included severed Pamela Voorhees head is excellent
- Still a very good sculpt
- Music is surprisingly clear when it plays
- Great chance to get the figure if you missed out on 1st version
Cons
- May not be different enough for most to double-dip
- Need to disconnect music battery to use included backdrop
Overall
The original NES Jason Voorhees figure will always hold a special place in my collection. It was such a strange, fun and wildly different exclusive that I just needed to own it. To top it off, that figure was my 1st real NECA action figure acquisition. Looking back now, it still surprises me how well this figure sold, and how far the idea of classic style in-game appearance repaints have come. It makes a lot of sense to revisit this figure, as the way in which the Video Game Appearqance figures are handled has evolved in the 2+ years since this was released.
The NES Jason Version 2 figure comes in a flapped window box that’s very similar to the original release. Some graphics have been updated, some alterations were made to the featured images and an all new sound chip was added. Now, when you open the flap, the box will start to play the theme music from NES Friday the 13th Video Game. It’s a fun feature that adds extra nostalgia and incentive to pick it up. The sound quality, in person, is surprisingly crisp and clear from that little speaker. You will need to disconnect the battery if you want to display the dio piece, as the chip is attached to the backdrop. The figure features some newly added paint details. There are some black line details throughout and newly painted eyes. The clear, glow-in-the-dark pieces have been replaced with solid, non-glowing, painted pieces. An added bonus is the inclusion of a “floating” Pamela Voorhees head with a display stand.
Joints were nice and tight. Elbows were a little too tight, and I used the hair dryer trick to loosen them up a bit. No paint chipping was evident, and the new paint apps were clean and sharp. If you have the previous release, then you will have to decide if the updates are worth a second purchase. The figure itself is definitely an improvement over the first release. The entire package, though, is what makes it fun. With the audio chip, new accessory, updated paint apps and a much more affordable price (compared to aftermarket on the SDCC2013 version), make it a highly recommended purchase for those that missed out.
