The Alien – 1/4 Scale Big Chap Alien by NECA is in stores now. The “Big Chap” is the Alien Xenomorph from the first alien film in 1979. After that film, the design has received numerous updates and refinements that give us the other versions of the Xenomorph, such as the Alien Warrior. But the Big Chap Alien remains, possibly, the most iconic of the series. The 22″ tall figure features a completely new sculpt, over 30 points of articulation and a bendable tail. Overall
NECA’s Big Chap Alien comes in a nice, large window box. It features a great design inspired by Alien and the smaller NECA packaging the figures come in. The figure sits on a cardboard backdrop, held on by a large number of twist ties. At the bottom of the backer you’ll find the assorted back appendages to attach. They are numbered, making it easy to pop them onto the correct spots. You will not need to remove them to get the figure back in the box.
The figure stands an impressive 22″ high when the legs are straight. In the basic standing pose, the figure had no balancing issues. Displaying the Big Chap in a more dynamic pose will likely require using the bendable tail for extra support, much like the 7″ scale figures. The sculpted details are excellent throughout, and is much more detailed than their (already great) 7″ scale Aliens. The paint is handled very well. The figure is cast in a dark gray, near black, plastic. Over top of the plastic, nearly every inch is covered by some type of paint. It has multiple green, black and golden washes and paint apps, which brings out the sculpted details.
Articulation is also handled well here. It poses much the same as the smaller version, with some addition joints added in here and there. It can handle dubamic standing poses, crouching poses and even kneeling. The wrists bending and outward as well as full rotate. The torso features a ball jointed connection. The best new addition is the new ball jointed neck, allowing the figure to look up and down, as well as side to side. The only downside here are the hips. The joints are incredibly difficult to move the first few times. The loud cracking sounds made me think the legs were going to snap off before they moved. After a few times posing the hips, the joints loosened up a bit, but be careful the first time you move them.
Keep in mind, there are variations. One with the transparent lips covering the teeth, which has a closed inner jaw and one with the lips pulled back and the inner jaw opened. The figure here is the latter. The split is 50/50. Looking at the two, I’d say I personally prefer the lips pulled back. This is an excellent large scale figure. If you have the room and enjoy collection Aliens figures, then this is a must buy.
