After being teased way back in June 2015, the Jungle Hunter Predator 1/4 Scale Figure by NECA is finally available! This updated version of NECA’s first 1/4 scale Predator stands at 19″ tall figure comes with a few surprises as well. The mask targeting system and flip open wrist gauntlet both have LED light up features. It has over 20 points of articulation and some great details that are all film accurate. Overall
The 1/4 scale Predator comes packaged in a large window box. The box features photos of the figure, details on the features and a nice mini-feature of other Predator figures by NECA. The Predator is held onto a cardboard back with twist ties and a plastic cover that protects the mask. Once removed, there’s no tray to set the figure in if you want to put int back in the box. You can stand it inside, though, if you do decide to place it back in for display or storage. The bottom of the box details how the batteries can be accessed and the LED features turned on.
Once removed from the box, the Predator is almost ready for display. All you need to do it attach his shoulder cannon and activate the LED lights. The mask slides up off of the head. Take care when doing this as the mask is a thinner plastic, but it shouldn’t present a problem. You activate the targeting system LEDs by pressing a well hidden button on the opposite side of the mask. The mask snaps back in without any issues and fits snugly in place. The wrist gauntlet only requires the small plastic tab be removed to activate the detonation sequence LED lights. Another well hidden button on the underside of the gauntlet tuns this feature on and off. The lights are fairly bright, especially in the gauntlet. You can clearly see them in direct light, but they really shine in darker situations and setups. There is also an interchangeable right hand included. The extra hand replaces the open palm with a closed fist. The wrist blade is extendable as well.
After getting everything set up, the Predator is ready for display and posing. The sculpting throughout the figure is simply fantastic. Each piece is handled with great care. Skin textures are smoother, while fabric and metal offer more texture. Everything looks and feels great as the plastic used is strong. NECA went with real netting on the figure, and it works very well. They attach the netting under the armor pieces or inside the torso joint. Surprisingly, the netting offered no hindrance when posing. The paint work on the figure is handled equally as well. Transitions in the skin tones are clean with no noticeable paint bleed anywhere on the figure. The armor pieces, shoulder cannon and mask all receive a nice matte, but metallic, finish. There are also different levels of paint wash used here to bring out the sculpted details. It’s used more on the non-skin areas, giving everything a battle used look.
The Predator features over 20 points of articulation. For the most part, it’s perfectly fine. Joints are tight with no paint locking or overly difficult to bend spots. However, there are no double jointed elbows, which does limit the posing a bit. I was initially concerned about the wiring i nthe left arm preventing it from getting into certain poses. However, they must have packed it in there well, as it never felt like it was stressing the wires and I could get it into any position the right arm could get into. The legs connect at the hips with a rotating joint instead of the swing out hips you see on many of their modern 1/4 scale figures. It doesn’t really prevent any dynamic leg poses, as there are swivel spots throughout the legs. If anything, it helps make the figure as sturdy as it is. I didn’t have any trouble with standing the figure in any of the poses.
This is another fantastic 1/4 scale release from NECA. By updating the original sculpt with new features, it helps to feel like a completely fresh release. The great sculpting, paint work and LED features all make this a great purchase for those with the space.
