Earlier this year, the Hot Toys Batman Returns – Batman 1/6 Scale Figure was released. There was a standard release, and a special edition 2-pack that included Bruce Wayne and a torn cowl for Batman. Today we’re looking at the standard Batman release. The figure is based on Tim Burton’s second, and much beloved, Batman film. In the movie, Batman is sporting an updated and refined batsuit, that features a more armored appearance, as opposed the muscle look of the first film. The cowl is thinner in the neck and more streamlined overall. Hot Toys has replicated the suit, with a rubberized costume, leather-like cape and hard plastic cowl, boots and gloves. The head sculpt is modeled after actor Michael Keaton and has moveable eyes. The 12″ figure includes multiple interchangeable hands, swappable lower face pieces, a grapnel gun, a remote control Batarang, napalm packets, a zip line launcher, two zip lines, a Batmobile remote, a signal jammer and a light up LED figure stand.

Overall
The Batman Returns figure comes packaged in a classic hot toys box. The top is removable, and there is a protective poster style one sheet underneath. The figure is housed in a plastic tray, along with all of the parts and accessories. The trays are layered, which allows for easy storage of part or the figure itself. The box makes a fantastic display piece on its own. There are no twist ties holding the figure in. There are, however, a few protective pieces of paper and plastic, which prevents parts from rubbing together while in transit. The cape is not attached while in the box. Simply pop off the cowl, sit the cape on the shoulder, and push the cowl back on. Hands swap out fairly easily, though you may want to have a hairdryer handy just to loosed up the swappable pegs a bit. The back of the head comes off, and there you can use the included stick to move the eyes, or removed the lower face piece. All in all, the figure is display ready almost immediately out of the box.
The Batman figure is based on the standard Hot Toys 1/6 scale body. It has over 30 points of articulation by default. The sculpting on the cowl, suit, and accessories is fantastic. The cowl and rubber suit have a nice sheen to them, and the skin and eyes are eerily realistic looking. The cape is a very sturdy material, with a leathery outer appearance. There are very thing metal wires on the tips of the cape, which allow for a bit of posing. The thickness does tend to make it hard to control, but it looks quite nice regardless. The interchangeable hands and face pieces are easy enough to swap out. The face pieces don’t have the widest range of expressions, so you’ll likely pick one and stick with that. The hands, though, are great. They allow for nice, natural looking poses. The weapon gripping hands have no problems holding onto the grapnel gun, batarang or the remotes. The figure includes a stand, which has two LED lights in it. It uses three AAA (though the booklets says AA) batteries. The lights themselves aren’t very bright, and best forgotten, really. The stand itself has a telescoping arm, that allows the hook to be used on the legs or underarms to hold a pose.
The batsuit is constructed of a fairly thick rubber, with only a small bit of give to it. This makes most poses impossible to achieve without fear of tearing. The suit crumples us while posing, which looks a bit awkward. It’s a shame, as the figure looks simply stunning in hand. Also, keep in mind that the ears of the cowl and fins/blades on the underside of the gauntlets are extremely fragile. I’ve seen multiple instances of those snapping off, and after inspecting it in hand, I can see how easily that can be done. The overall appearance is excellent, and will make a great display piece. It has a wonderful film quality look and feel to it, and comes with a ton of great pieces. However, if you’re into lots of articulation or like to have dynamic posing, then this may disappoint. It’s those issues that keep this figure from being perfect, but at times it is really close.
